Is There Polygamy In Heaven?

Then he wasn't talking about you.

Well, the quote says that the very women who would object to a plurality of wives  would NOT object to a plurality of husbands.

So he was talking to me. I do object to a plurality of wives, at this point in time.

But I most certainly DO object to a plurality of husbands as well!!

And If I showed you a scripture depticting God as a Polygamist then what?

Me too.

I don't think the church requires us to accept the plurality of wives so I'm not sure why so many seem to think it is a requirement in eternity.

I'm sure that simply accepting the fact that some men will have a plurality of wives will suffice. Some will whether or not you accept it.

There is no requirement that every man have more than one wife.

So you're not one of those that does not object to a plurality of husbands, are you.

When thinking about polygamy to me it brings up disturbing thoughts of celestial orgies and threesomes and is that how it would be or would polygamy be intimacy between only 2 people at a time? I know personally women who love threesomes with 1 man but the idea of that in heaven just makes me think it's a carnal doctrine and not of God.

Sounds like you have a problem with your own imagination.  Where in any scripture or revelation is something like that described?

IIRC the polygamy essay states that we simply don't know what role polygamous relationships play in heaven.

WOW.  :bad:

THAT is not polygamy.  I think you need to rethink your thinking.

This may be the ideal heaven for some.

I'm just making the distinction that we don't know how plural marriage works so you can't even find scripture disproving what I imagined.

We do know how plural marriage worked in 19th century Church, and just so you'll know -- there were no orgies or threesomes.

Polygamy will be needed in heaven, but it is not because there are more women than men, and has nothing to do with sex.

It's the "law of Sarah".  A brief study of the symbolism behind Abraham, Isaac, and Sarah should make the entire thing obvious.  ...

(Abraham was let off at the last minute and did not have to sacrifice his son... Sarah was also let off at the last minute, and did not have to rely on a handmaid... but consider the most famous handmaid of all - the virgin Mary, (which involved polygamy and polyandry btw).  It's very simple.

Jesus is the "only" begotten son - the -- "only" -- one, and he had to be born to a mortal.  In other words, perfect beings  (like Eve in Eden, and like our Heavenly Mother) do not "beget" children.  Begetting children required a transgression in Eden.  Perfect beings do not bear children.  Handmaids are needed.  That is what the scripture states is the reason - for raising up children, and that really is the reason for it.

...that you know of.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. Some people have that as part of their sexual orientation, and it's approved of in my religion.

Can you share why?

In this life I know that plural relationships can work. They are hard, harder then monogamy but they can make people happy.

As to their eternal nature I think jealousy dies in heaven. With exaltation comes omniscience. You need never fear another because you always know the feelings of your spouse perfectly. Heaven is a place where everyone celebrates everyones successes, victories, joys, and happiness as if it were their own because they feel it perfectly. There would be no worries or fears about sharing a husband or wife. Even the real concerns of this life that would make such a relationship difficult would fade. There is no worry about splitting time as you will be beyond time. No worries about divided loyalties because your loyalties are all one.

I will stop here because last time I shared my understanding of heaven beyond this point people stared at me as if I were completely and utterly insane. One caring person suggested I talk to my bishop who would explain that that was impossible.

Thanks, Nehor. This was an awesome response and definitely worth thinking about.

But what I want to know though then is what is the point of eternal polygamy? Is there something that can't be achieved with just 1 man and 1 wife together? What is the eternal purpose of a man having multiple wives in heaven that couldn't be done by just 1 wife?

What do you think of my theory in post #141? There is something that cannot be achieved with 1 perfect man and 1 perfect woman.  It appears from what we know of Eden, and what we know of the Savior, that perfect beings cannot beget children.

1st birth vs. second birth.  Why do we wait to baptize someone until they have reached the age of accountability?  I think baptism is the more perfect birth.  The first birth involves getting spirits into something they have not chosen with a full understanding of what they were getting themselves into - the first birth is not perfect, and cannot be given by perfect parents.

Maybe it's just a matter of preference. Not everything has to be done out of necessity.

Maybe they love each other and don't want to be with someone else forever even if that would mean trading for monogamy? I suspect that they can't achieve anything more or less.

Your question assumes that monogamists win while the rest are looking for an out. If they want an out I am guessing it will be there. Imagine that I married tomorrow. She is struck down with cancer within the year. I remarry and have children. Neither of them want to be with anyone but me and I do not want to choose between them. What is the problem. If that sounds chauvinist make me the one struck down by cancer and she remarries and has children and I am still okay with it though I have no reason to believe such relationships exist other then a vague hunch.

Sorry, monogamy is the ideal way to go.  Heaven is perfect and involves cleaving to one person and none else.  Handmaids are needed for the plan of salvation, but it is a temporary sacrifice.  I believe that the perfect eternal relationship will be monogamous.  One God, one spouse etc.
