Requirement Of Priesthood

So, I've been reading the Ordain Women discussion with some interest.  As I have been thinking about it I wondered what would happen if female ordination was allowed. 

 

Currently, priesthood ordination isn't really an optional thing for men.  In order for a man to obtain all the blessings available, he must be ordained.  Would this same requirement then apply to women as well?  That is, if any woman can be ordained would it necessary follow that all women must be ordained?  If not, why?

 

To me, it seems that if we are really going for gender equality then the requirements and responsibilities should be equally applied.  If ordination for women was just a "Only if you want it" kind of thing, then we still have a fundamental difference between men and women in the church.

 

For the record, I do not support the OW movement.  At the same time, I do not condemn for the simple reason that I do not know what they are feeling or experiencing and I do trust that we will eventually come to the full truth.

I think issuing more callings to couples could be an interesting spin-off.

Husbands and wives could be bishops together and counsel together as they seek to help those in need... Could be interesting.

A man has to be worthy and ordained to the priesthood to enter the temple. A woman only has to be worthy. Is she already ordained to a priesthood by birthright? if so would not the "Priesthood" be somewhat redundant for her?

IMHO I think it is about power and leadership not priesthood rights

The problem with this whole movement is that they are equating equality with sameness. Men and women are equally valued in the Church, but they are not and should not be treated the same. If there are practices in the Church that are causing women to feel less than equal they should be addressed. This does not mean the responsibilities of the two should be the same.

What if the priesthood is intended by God to subdue the crudeness of males and encourage them to be gentle with females?

 

Do you believe that females will obtain the priesthood in the next world?

 

Do you believe that we all have specialized roles to perform?

 

Are you willing to "humbly" seek to do God's will?

Men can refuse to be ordained, and we have gender equality. The Priesthood is the role of servant, I am sure many men would welcome the help from sisters and we are not the only ones who do not ordain women...not even close.

I wondered what would happen if female ordination was allowed.

 

Most men would retreat to the man cave or nearest equivalent.  Eventually, a new church would spring up from one of them.

I agree with you that men can refuse ordination.  However, a man cannot refuse ordination and then go and receive the endowment.  If women could be ordained, would it then become a requirement for them?  If not, wouldn't this still indicate that there is a fundamental difference between the genders?

sadly, if women were ordained, I fear that there would be many men who would start to misuse priesthood being a duty to serve as an excuse to tell his wife that she needs to be subserviant to him.
