Subtle...did The Ow Group Hear That?

It seems that the first counselor of the relief society presidency addressed the ordainwomen people by speaking about the roles that we have as sons and daughters of god. She also stressed the priesthood several times as belonging to the sons of god. How will the OrdainWomen react to this speech. Also, she spoke about the proclamation of family and its importance. No caving in to social pressure in this talk.

Ok, I really didn't want to start the umpteenth Women and the Priesthood thread, but:

I think that Sister Stephens made the current church position on Women and the Priesthood very clear today.  I can't help but wonder if it was directed straight at the recent press that OW has been generating.

Basically, she said that women already have the priesthood through the Temple ordinances, and that they have access through their husband or Bishop to any need for blessings.

I only post this because I think that this talk was making very clear that the Church will not be changing this policy any time soon despite the press and pressure from this organization.

Funny, I just posted the exact same thing.  Perhaps I can delete mine..I don't think it will let me.

If you ask the moderators, you can have them either delete or merge it with this one.

After we heard this talk, I told my wife about the OW people.  She was quite perplexed at that, and said something to the effect of "Don't we women have more than enough to do already?  I thought that was why the Lord gave men the priesthood, so they could shoulder at least some of the burden!"  She then told me that I could quote her on that on this forum.

Which was somewhat remarkable, since she has no patience with apologetics and has begrudged all the time I spend here..  Not that this is the apologetics board any longer.

So, being directed to post something is somewhat different from "Will you please get off that computer and come to bed already?

So women do have the priesthood already if temple endowed? Hmmm - maybe that will appease the OW group. Unlikely.

She quoted Elder Ballard's quote already referred to and stated that men and women are given Priesthood power in the temple, but she still used the term "Priesthood holder" only for the men.

Well, cal, it's kind of heavy, so as a courtesy I am holding it for you.

Doesn't it just change the question?

If women already have the priesthood why are they not allowed to use it?

I didn't think it was all that subtle

Did you notice she was wearing a purple suit?

Thank you as I need to have my hands free to play with the grandkids today.

I think the discussion will move into discussing not the question of "why are they not allowed to use it" but the question "how is the Priesthood used by women"....but the language first needs to define what it means for women to have the Priesthood power and blessings if they are not "Priesthood holders".

Oh snap! Looks like the OW folks better think twice before they ever try something like this again.

Weirdest PH session ever! Normally my husband would be with his dad and brothers and their sons. But not tonight he stayed home and he, my son and I watched, along with my inactive daughter and her husband who happen to drop by. Normally I just get me time. And just the thought that my husband didn't stick with tradition doesn't sit well. I guess times change. Dang OW group. I'm just going to have to get use to change. Maybe I'll have to start a new tradition and get everyone to watch together, than have pie after. But still uneasy about it being live on TV. Now what if everyone in the church decides to stay home and watch.

Congrats Stargazer, I've never seen so much hair on a newborn, she's adorable!

Shocked the doctor, too!

I was going to go to the Stake Center and observe tradition, but the closer it got to the time the less inclined I was to shave and get dressed up.  Finally I just gave in to sloth and stayed home to watch it on my computer.  The wife asked if she should watch it, too, and I said that she could if she wanted, but there wasn't anything magic about it anyway.  She elected to take a nap instead.

She thought it was funny when I told her that the brethren were uncomfortable with their wives in attendance because when the GA's would admonish the men to get their acts together, they stood in danger of being nudged when their wives felt they needed reminding they were falling down in that department, too.

Did you notice that this session contained a lot of home teaching advice?  I thought it was a very profitable session, actually, and plan to watch it again in its entirety when it becomes available.

Yes! My husband struggles with HT'g sometimes...I turned to do what you said wives might do...nudge him a little, and guess what? He was asleep! I really did enjoy everything about that talk and the ones I was able to hear.

Pres. Monson seems to be doing so well, I liked him describing his wanting his dad to speed up in the family car. I'll bet the young men enjoyed that.

My daughter and I spoke about women wanting the Priesthood and she thought it was strange. I tried to explain to her the reasons for it.

I was doing something very odd while listening to the priesthood session.  I was playing a video game, Modern Warfare 2, one of the solo missions.  I am somewhat ADD and it's an odd form of it.  I can split my mind between two completely different tracks, as long as one of the tracks is something with a well-worn pathway, and it actually helps me keep the other thing in focus.  I can't go to sleep while playing, in fact.  I keep trying to beat the sub-6-minute time on that solo mission, but it is being very elusive.

I liked the missionary talk that Elder Holland gave.  I think some of his insights deserve serious reconsideration.  There are a couple of people I've known for years at work who might be inveigled into being brought to church at least once.  One is a lay youth minister in his church, so that might be a bit of a stretch, but I've gone to a few of his events, so maybe there's a chance.

Haven't caught up on the thread yet, but just wanted to say the video of Ruth Todd is an perfect response, imo.  She means it when she says 'these are our sisters and we want them to be with us'.

“Millions of women in this church do not share the views of this small group that has come and organized this protest today and some of the members feel this is very divisive as well,” Ruth Todd, Spokeswoman for the LDS Church, said. “But even so these are our sisters and we want them in this church and we hope they’ll find the peace and joy we all seek in the gospel of Jesus Christ.”

I got this from the ABC4 video.

I think that the got hit hard with this talk. But the sister did make a lot of sense. Like I said the church would need to change radically for girls to get the priesthood. Relief Society would need to be abolished or radically changed from its current form and likewise for the separation of the youth by sex. Not to mention just how many members would leave because of such a decision. The speaker was speaking to the OW movement and to the general women membership in the church.

I suspect about as many would leave as did when OD2 came out.

As for the arrangement of classes, it would probably be very similar to what we have now.  Or perhaps we could go to a 2-hour block and kind of combine the format of Sunday School with "Priesthood".  Somehow Sunday School has survived co-ed classes, and I suspect the Priesthood could survive co-ed quorums if needed.

But I don't think it's ever going to happen.

I have to do the same...but it is my sleep/neurological/moment disorder, Restless Legs Syndrome or the much more high tone and horrible sounding like it is something contagious but less informative new official name Willis Ekbom Disease....which just so happens to be misdiagnosed as ADD in a huge amount of children so it may involve some of the same neural effects.

PS:  I love watching it at home as I can stay awake and aware by getting up and cleaning the room or doing something else useful instead of being driven out into the halls to walk or if lucky being in the RS room and walking at the back feeling very uncomfortable and unable to focus.
