A Question For The Longtimers Here, Were There As Many Topics On People Who Doubt, Say 7 Yrs. Ago?

It's been a on going story that's I've watched for 12+ years. Many people come to a board like this with questions and looking for a friendly crowd to help. Phaedrus

It is difficult to distinguish those who have a sincere question from the trolls. They would be better served in the Social Hall rather than this apologetic forum.

The Welcome page should give the visitor a better orientation on which forum to visit.

I don't have a 7 year track. I only go back six years, to 2007... doesn't seem like it has actually been that long though. But even then. I think the forum was dealing with debates from ex-LDS and nonLDS Christians more than I think it was dealing with "waivering faith" type LDS.

At that time, the forum seemed to allow for a bit more abrasive personalites than at present..on all sides. It's like the forum temperature wasn't very welcoming to someone struggling with faith. Seemed the lines between teams were a bit clearer back then in regards to what team you and or they were on.

I joined 7 years ago...2 days ago. I used to be a well respected poster here, or so I thought. Also miss a lot of the old posters.

The well respected comment was an attempt at humor, until people got to know me, my spelling got a lot of rude comments. This may be my last post...I used to get 12 a day, but something has gone wrong. If so, goodby all, I hope it is not my last, probably just a computer thing.

Another question for longtimers, are you sick of threads that speak on it and wish to conversate other types of deep topics?

I'm not really sick of talking about how to overcome doubt, but I would like to have more conversations on deeper issues, or the deeper issues that we would learn more about through faith.

I'd really like to know more about the way things will be when our Lord returns, especially in regards to how things will be better with a new system of government instead of this mess we have to put up with right now. Life without money, maybe, or some way to enjoy all the good things on this planet which now only the financially well off can afford to enjoy.

Sad actually, almost feels like I am having a funeral for them all when that isn't my thought. Really just saying names in the wind and hoping the wind blows my words to those I think of.

It's amazing the footprints people make in the tracks of the lives of others, even when they aren't thinking about making tracks at all.. I imagine they are just walking the best they can, like the rest of us.

Wow, you've been lurking a while. I missed the comment by Louis, as he expressed as the preferred reference to him.

I think many would remember CK Salmon. He was prolific.I remember a guy who used a picture of Spurgeon. That most have been Theophilus. Paul Hadik was an Old ZLMB guy, Calvinist, who was one of the moderators but hasn't surfaced around here for a long time. I consider him a friend. I have a Facebook page. My only friend is Paul. (I am not very active) He helped keep the haters down. As a former Baptist and Calvinist become Catholic, I am sorry that some of my co-religionists are pretty harsh on Calvin too. For me, he was a step toward Rome because I had been schooled in dispensationalism. Catholics don't always appreciate our shared ideas, especially about how to interpret the Old Testament prophecies about the "Israel of God" and the covenant theology that stems from that. I think I have bumped into a few anti-Catholic Reformed folk over the years too so it cuts both ways. Anyway, if nobody Reformed steps forward, I can defend you guys when push comes to shove. But usually it seems like the subject waits for a Calvinist to show up. So jump on Erik everybody! heh.

Appreciate it, 3DOP. Quite a journey from Reformed Protestant to Roman Catholic, I'm sure. Definitely not anti-Catholic myself. That said, there are a number of things Catholics espouse don't align with my reading of Scripture. But at the end of the day, we agree on the big stuff (The Trinity, the Incarnation/Hypostatic Union, creation Ex-Nihilo). Interestingly, my uncle recently joined your persuasion and was baptized last year. Still on the LDS rolls, though (even though he hasn't stepped foot in an LDS ward building in years). Going to see him next month and am looking forward to the conversation.

Regards,

I've only been here 4 years but I miss the geography theads. The recent ones degenerate into the questioning of whos testimony is real and who is a real Mormon. I have been traveling through Central America recently and I am currently in Costa Rica I had some questions about a north flowing river in Panama and if Larry had researched this river as it is in the narrow neck of land. My internet is spotty at best right now .

I miss Larry Pousenll, Anijen, handys003, notHagoth7 ( the guy with the Beowulf theory) Brant Gardner, livy111us, Sevenbak and a few others I can't recall right now.

Yeah, but he/me/I am way way way down on your list. What's up with that, Mudcat?

Sad actually, almost feels like I am having a funeral for them all when that isn't my thought. Really just saying names in the wind and hoping the wind blows my words to those I think of.

Well somehow I found out about your words about me. I hope it's because you somehow benefited from my words that you saw.

Yep, while trying to share what we believe will be of some help to others because we believe those things help us in our lives.

I remember selek1. Just as we were barely able to communicate he was cut off from the board. Maybe he'll come around again.

ZLMB days. Wow. That was wild and woolly.

Wild and woolly? You are channeling Tom Cruise discussing home teaching: :)

This was actually gleaned from a Scientology recruiting video.

One you listed left because he told me "on the low down" that this site has become an enemy of the Church...I told him that was a bit much. Can't "won't" say who. I agree after knowing someone for years and then they are gone...is almost like a friend dying. At least when a friend dies you know why, when someone just stops posting you have no idea why! My returned missionary son wants to join, but no one will give me an answer as to if he can join, since I already have an account...sent PM's many of them but no one will respond. My conscience will not allow me to create a sock puppet. Edited by Bill “Papa” Lee

I use to wonder if fairlds.com was secretly against the church for posting so much anti information and the way I'd learn things I'd never even heard of before. Now I don't think that way of course.

Loved Selek. He was passionate and plain spoken.

Lesellers is another I miss.

Hello Pa Pa...

Why shouldn't he just upon an account in his own name? He's a separate person... I've known many parents/children who have posted here, each with their own user names, etc. YOUR having an account shouldn't preclude him from opening one for himself...

My hubby has an account and rarely posts. But reads what I post and I try to include him in on the conversations when asked. Pa Pa's son posting would be fun to read and stories of his mission would be so interesting! I've wondered how many on here have family members that have joined, now I know. Edited by Tacenda

Since jwhitlock recently saw fit to resurrect a thread dating back to 2013 (regarding Mars Hill Church) - figured I might do the same.  Time will tell whether 2013 was worth the bottling...

;0)

And this thread must be at least as relevant to participants here & now.

Herein I made a post (#32).  And over the past two years I'd say the trend continues.  The aforementioned thread is an exception.  This forum now spends a small minority of time concerning itself with the challenge to Mormonism from traditional Christianity (be it from Protestants or Catholics).  The content found now is overwhelmingly insular, participants concerned with an in-house LDS debate about what constitutes "true" LDS.

Anyone disagree or care to discuss the emphasis of the forum mid 2015?  Should anyone think of this forum as the proverbial "canary in the coalmine?"

Oh I think they are around. There is a couple on right now that I think could qualify. The ones that no matter how many times you answer their requests they ignore the answers. I don't know why but I get tired of playing quicker now. Must be becoming a crotchety old man.

Not me!   I do listen to your answers,,,I am  just old!!   I am sorry ERayR..I know  I am one of those..thanks for your patience.  But I am not a troll.

Ah! The good old days.

It is against board policy to give an "anti-testimony", but there were plenty of threads on why people left the church. The first time I remember seeing a thread specifically devoted to examining "doubt" was the thread on "shaken faith syndrome", but that is just my memory.

Now, I personally have no particular interest on such threads.

It is based on my memory, but it seems that there alot more threads back then on BOM and church history. BOM DNA came on very strong, and, at the beginning, I was pretty alone in giving responses. Also, we had several authors of books critical to the church, and they were actively participating on our discussions.

I remember telling one of them that he had so many corrections to make in his book, he should issue a weekly newsletter. "Bloody Brigham", "The Fourteen Articles of Faith" (a cynical rendition of our doctrine) were some of his chapters that we focused on.

Basically we showed that no one should be afraid of anything the critics have to say. The DNA issue was potentially very troubling and it took over a year or so to deal with it.

LDS apologetics have come a long way since then.. With the possbile exception of Rob, most of them avoid discussing scriptural "proofs", Bible bashing. The critics have become more careful in making their claim more accurate, not so much JOD and Mormon Doctrine, and Rob actually use priesthood and SS manuals.

Miss you bro! Oh I get it,  a really old thread.

In your dreams.

The dissenters may seem louder and more numerous because the Internet is their soapbox, but as one apostle assured us last conference, the Church of Jesus Christ has never been stronger.
