Can a Mormon be a real Mormon and not believe in true grace?

Posted (edited)

I appriciate the comments/thoughts/posts so far. As to the questions I believe the material in the link I have given above explains what True Grace and false grace is along with what True Faith vrs false faith is if one is inclined to read the material and scriptures that accompany the material.

Do you mean a Grace that does not require "everything you can do"?

Do you believe grace means you do absolutely nothing to receive salvation?

I am a faithful LDS who has no problem saying I am saved by the merits, mercy, and Grace of God and the only limitation I put on that is that I have to be willingly accept that grace. And to further define, Willing means to have a desire and to act in good faith.

If he does, he goes fundamentally against the "Book of Mormon"

Because LDS tend to stand clear of creeds, there is much more flexibility in what one has to believe in order to be labeled a believing LDS. So as pointed out, a LDS is hard to define if we are talking about what beliefs or Doctrines they cling to. Even the articles of Faith allow some flexibility.

Since the Book of Mormon gives the true understanding of grace, I would submit that "real Mormons" believe in "true grace". It is the majority of Protestants that do not believe in "true grace".

Can a True Orthodox LDS [Mormon] believe in the True Grace offered them by way of GOD The Father and God The Son Jesus Christ and God The HOLY GHOST ?.

Hi Anakin 7,

Are you asking if affiliation to the LDS church means that you are automatically going to hell according to teaching found at this Quaker website?

The problem is that the information only represents the opinions of the author, and is not a valid resource to determine the meaning of true grace.

The grace of Jesus Christ is how I live and breathe every day, and it is how I am able to do good and to forsake my sins and become better a little each day. I cannot do good on my own--only with Christ. I am able to look forward to an eternity of joy with my family ONLY because Jesus Christ provides that opportunity to me through his atonement, his merits. As others have asked--are there any LDS who *don't* believe in grace? It is an essential of the gospel.

Instead of an article, what is your favorite NT grace scripture? Then maybe we can see how that is supported (or not) by the teachings of Jesus Christ found in the LDS church.

Here is the summary of "true grace" according to Anakin7's link:

"Per Paul, true grace is not salvation, but instead a soul-and-heart-purifying process that brings salvation."

Do you feel that Mormon's don't believe this somehow? Grace is indeed purifying and brings salvation. We could not be saved without the purifying power and grace of the atonement.

Does this answer your question?

Well that actually is a very beautiful statement and captures perfectly how I understand grace.

No I was making a humor comment regarding the "Quaker" comment above. Another article about True [The Meaning of] Grace - http://www.christian...eaning-of-grace

On the subject of grace, I would recommend the book "What's So Amazing about Grace?" by Philip Yancy.

Also "The Ragamuffin Gospel" by Brennan Manning.

And as to whether an orthodox Mormon can believe in true grace ... I think God's grace answers that in the affirmative! :)

(Whether the official doctrine of a given church organization lends itself to an understanding and the embrace of God's true grace is another question ... but God deals with the hearts of people directly, I believe.)

I read this article as well, nice article! Again, I find nothing in it that contradicts Mormon teachings on grace. All of these teachings on grace are clearly explained in the Book of Mormon.

Are you satisfied, or are you going to give me another article?

You somewhat invalidate your own post when you say "real Mormon," then you continue to do more damage when you include "orthodox."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman

A Fundamentalist LDS person could consider mainstream Mormons to be "not true" Mormons because they don't believe in practicing polygamy, even though early church leaders did. A mainstream Mormon could say FLDS are "not real" Mormons because they still believe in an idea that was, according to revelation from God, supposed to be shelved. Strangites could call the whole lot "not real," and I've met RLDS who don't even consider themselves Mormon, at all, but, since they believe in the prophet Joseph Smith, are as Mormon to me as any of the others.

All of these are "real Mormons," just as the bastards who conducted the Spanish Inquisition were real Christians, just as the suicide bombers in the Middle East are real Muslims. Religion doesn't make people good, their behavior does and there is a spectrum of behavior in every culture, just as there is a spectrum of beliefs, understanding and education in any group of religious people.

The problem of your post is, then, compounded further by saying "true" grace. If someone believes in being sanctified through divine power, then they also truly believe in it. That is why yours is a silly question. All Christians believe in grace, though they may understand it a little differently here and there. Mormons, believing in Jesus and his power to sanctify, lead to salvation, whatever... are, therefore, "true" Christians, and, therefore, believe in grace... or "true" grace, for all intents and purposes.

Does that make them better people? No. Does it make them worse people? No. Does it make you better if you believe in "true" grace and they don't? No.

Perhaps you have the wrong view of me, I am LDS, have served as a Missionary in my Ward off and on for approx 20 yrs. I proclaim The Restored Gospel to all that will listen. I also help with those individuals and families that recieve anti LDS polemical material. I am active in Public relations in our area with other churches. I am a former Methodist and Baptist.

I post the above referenced articles to show that other non LDS Christians agree with us on a # of Gospel topics such as Grace and it's True meaning along with True Faith. To me there is a True Grace accessed/activated by True Faith in opposition to a false grace [Cheap grace] trying to be accessed/activated by a false faith which I view in line with The Cost Of Discipleship and its scriptural teachings. Sure I will give you another article - http://www.14lds.com/worthy.htm
