There is an old rumor that they made the "hot drinks" part of the WoW since that would mean tea, a beverage the women enjoyed.

Supposedly Emma had had it after cleaning up after the brethren when they would spit tobacco on the floor during their meetings and she spoke with Joseph about it and thus the WoW came about. So since the men would have to give up tobacco so would the women have to give up "hot drinks" or tea.

Is this rumor documented anywhere?

I don't really care if it's the Elixir of Life: I have covenanted not to drink it, and I know I will be blessed for keeping my covenants. ;)

It's pretty accurate. For the full story go to "The School of the Prophets and the Word of Wisdom" @ lds.org. It is a primary lesson in the D&C.

It says that tea was added to the WoW so that women would have to give up something like the men, in a primary lesson?

Oh no, I apologise that's just someone positing that as a reason. I just gave the story of how the WoW came about. So definitely a rumor on the part that Joseph or others wanted to make it so the women couldn't have tea.

The Word of Wisdom was given for the "weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints". There are many people today who can drink a little alcohol and not become addicted, but they are not the weakest of all Saints. Alcohol in moderate amounts has been shown to have some positive medical effects. (But so does a healthy diet and proper sleep and exercise.)

Mainly, to me, the hot drinks, and other things are as Kenngo1968 said "I have covenanted not to drink it, and I know I will be blessed for keeping my covenants."

There is nothing in the lesson I saw about tea being restricted because it was a woman's socialising beverage.

It sounds like a rumour started by someone who knows little of tea beyond some inaccurate notions of what tea houses were like in America of the 1920s.

If you knew the history of the tea trade and what the British did to use tea as a weapon on early America and starting the first drug trade to keep the Chinese to continue working to provide the world with tea.

Which leaves us all scratching our heads as to why coffee is harmful now that the church says its not because of caffeine???

I don't know but When you go to a heart doctor or get a cancer diagnosis one of the first thing you are told to give up is coffee and tea.

If it was because of caffeine, maybe the church was a little quick to ok caffeinated drinks like sodas.

Because of its high caffeine content, no???

Did the church come out and endorse them as ok for health? I must have missed that.

I did not say it was because of high caffeine content. I don't know why but I do know the highly recommend the cessation of their use. My wife has had heart problems for years and last year she had cancer. She did/does not use either but was told that if she did that they recommended she not use them.

I recently read an article in the Readers Digest on how you can increase your IQ. It mentioned how caffeine can help. But as with everything, the key is in using it in moderation.

A bit of caution needs to be exhibited relative to the discussion. The church simply states that Sec. 89 does not forbid all caffeinated beverages. They're not making a statement on whether or not they're good for you, just simply that they're not forbidden like coffee and tea. Taking a step back will prevent the erroneous assumption that the church has said they're ok and that, for whatever reason, that is irrespective of any health condition where one would be otherwise counseled by health professionals against use.

The bottom line of what I'm saying is to be cautious in the conclusions that are drawn as one day when those conclusions are challenged they won't be falsely ascribed to the church.

Judd:

Logical fallacy.. Non sequitur

TSS, I struggle often times with many of your posts as they seem to often lack in specifics and context. I can't tell if you're saying my argument is non-sequitur or Tacenda's. I know you prefer brevity, but please clarify.

I'm sorry. I'm normally given to be overly verbose. ;) To clarify it is a non sequitur to claim because something isn't approved of it must be condemned. I agree that we have no revelation as to why Coffee and Tea are to be avoided while other products with the same or very similar contents are not.

The iq effect is only temporary and not if you are using caffeine to counteract lack of sleep.

Coffee consumption is unhealthy because of the higher concentration of caffeine, which if consumed habitually, can affect blood pressure (which effects the heart) among many other things. If there is anything else in coffee that is unhealthy other than caffeine, it is minimal compared to substance found in other things we consume each day (trans fats, sodium, sugars, artificial sweeteners, food dye, etc.).

So the point I am making is once you say caffeine is okay, it weakens the claim that people should avoid coffee consumption because of adverse health affects.
