bluebell Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Why do Evangelicals care? When I was serving my mission in Santa Rosa CA, the Jewish congregation used the Mormon church a few times a year. It didn't seem to bother anyone.
Storm Rider Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 What a wonderful thing to do and such an easy way to serve our fellow brother and sisters. It is clear that some critics do not see how bad they look every time they open their mouths to criticize. It is clear that no one should ever ask aid from them; they will only be willing to serve if it meets their specific standards, in their own time, and in their own way. Their lips will draw nigh unto me, but their hearts are far from me. 1

Anijen Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 I like it.I wish we would even help them in eventually building their own mosque.I say making good relations like this is not only the Christian thing to do but will later bring blessings to us and them. 1

DH Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 (edited) I think that's way cool. FWIW, I've heard they allow Muslims to pray on the grounds of the Preston, England temple, too. The story I heard was that temple workers noticed a bunch of Muslims praying outside, and when they asked them why they'd pray at a Mormon temple, they said "It may not be our religion, but we see this as a holy place, and need a place to pray." So the temple workers told them to feel free to continue praying there. Edited May 29, 2012 by DH 1
BlueDreams Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Don't mean to be picky, but I think it's a little exagerative to say ev's are having fits about it all over the web when it's a youtube video from over a year ago with around 1,300 hits.Just sayin'With luv,BD 1

I haven't been able to find an untampered version of it yet. While I was searching, though, I found this bit of info which some may find interesting:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mobileweb/2012/05/02/mormonism-fastest-growing-religion_n_1469566.htmlMormonism and Islam are the two fastest growing religions in the US. I suspect the Jewish use of LDS buildings is not just because we're nice, but also because we don't have permanently installed crosses everywhere. I don't believe that our lack of crosses everywhere has anything to do with the LDS church offering to let Jewish congregations use our chapels for their holy days. I think that offer really does come because we are trying to be nice.

I think that offer really does come because we are trying to be nice. Yes, the Mormons are trying to be nice, but I don't think that was cinepro's point. The point was, Jews would probably be uncomfortable celebrating Yom Kippur in a building with crosses permanently affixed to the walls, so it's not surprising they would ask to use LDS buildings because we don't have the crosses. 1

HairBear Posted May 29, 2012 Posted May 29, 2012 Never been to Preston myself, but I have family in the area. The Preston, England temple is my nearest temple. I've been there lots of times, obviously. I've not heard that story before, but it doesn't surprise me that it could have happened, as there's the MTC and a chapel (which I think is also the Preston Stake centre) on the temple grounds as well. There is a large muslim population in England, and if they asked to use any chapel for their Friday prayer service they'd be allowed to without any problem.

I have heard this same thing also and it goes back many years, I know it was being done in So Cal back in the 1970's and the same reason was given back then.

Did Jewish synagogues start asking around, or did LDS church's start offering?
Daniel Peterson Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 I posted a blog entry on this topic today, prompted by this thread.http://dcpsicetnon.blogspot.com/2012/05/muslim-prayers-in-muslim-meetinghouse.htmlThanks!
The Nehor Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Thanks, when I saw that and they emphasized covering up pictures of Jesus I was shocked that they thought this was odd. I mean if you are going to be anti-Muslim at least do it right and learn about it. C'mon people, at least take some pride in your bigotry.
Storm Rider Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 Good blog! I also enjoyed seeing the pictures. Dan, I had heard that the Church itself donated a considerable some to the work of the Cathedral of the Madeleine in SLC, was that not accurate? Was it only individuals?
Libs Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 (edited) I think the idea of sharing space is really neat! Also loved the stories about helping other religions build their own places of worship (I had not known about the help in building the Hindu Temple in Spanish Fork, for example...how cool is that?!) And the story about donating thousands of Korans was also very touching. It is frustrating to see people criticized for such beautiful, charitable works. So sad. Edited May 30, 2012 by Libs
Daniel Peterson Posted May 30, 2012 Posted May 30, 2012 I think that the Church itself donated a substantial sum for the renovations of the Cathedral of the Madeleine. I'm pretty sure of it, in fact. But I'm not absolutely certain, so I decided not to mention it without confirmation.I know for a fact, though, of a million-dollar donation from a very wealthy Latter-day Saint, now deceased. President Monson, he told me, called him to thank him for doing it.
