Dgal Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Make sure you tell the missionaries, that their aim is NOT to debate the gospel, but rather enter into dialogue with investigators. Once it' turns into a competition or debating match, arrogance will take over most likely. We want the Spirit to touch and convert which means we must be humble, but factual 2
rpn Posted April 9, 2015 Posted April 9, 2015 Yes, role playing can be good. But it is no substitute for seeking the words God wants one to use in specific instances for an individual. Be sure to remind them that saying what you role play with them to say, is NOT as good as saying what Heavenly Father inspires them to say.

They have run into some issues they had trouble with. They just need some help knowing how to respond to some of the questions they have been getting. I was a missionary. I know how they feel
UtahTexan Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 Great night with the missionaries. It went very well. When it was over, they asked, "can we do this again next week?" I love the Gospel!!!!! 2
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted April 10, 2015 Posted April 10, 2015 (edited) Hello Mola...From my experience (2-yr stake mission) of going on splits with the sisters, I'm not sure I agree with your #4...The sisters that were better able to answer questions were more likely to be successful... GGIt depends on a certain perspective. I am looking at from the baptist that tells me they are staunch and that they have a problem with my religion. Nothing I say is going to convert that person. The point I was trying to make is it is better to seek out people that are interested instead of trying to win the argument. Of course knowing how to deal with concerns is very important. And it does play a role in conversions. I never once converted some one because I answered all their questions, though. What converted them was keeping the commitments that lead to a testimony. We want the Spirit to touch and convert which means we must be humble, but factualThis is essentially what I am getting at. To learn when it is a debate vs a discussion. The discussion comes when a person is interested. And there are various levels of interest. I can't tell you how much time I spent talking with people that I thought were interested when it turns out all they wanted to do was debate and convert me. Missionaries are there to convert not to be converted. Anyway I think that the role playing that country boy is doing is quite useful just for the piece of mind it can bring a missionary. I wish I had more opportunities to do what you are doing with the missionaries in your area.

I wish I had more opportunities to do what you are doing with the missionaries in your area. Let me give you an example. Last night, the missionaries were giving me a lesson on the restoration (as role-play). They had a picture of Jesus laying his hands on someone ordaining them to a calling. I asked where that occurred in the Bible. They were stumped. So, I directed them to Numbers 27:22-23. Where the Lord commanded Moses to lay his hands on Joshua and ordain him to be Moses' successor. They ate it up. This was just one of the ways the role-playing helped them. 5

Yes, I can see where that is very helpful. That is a wise course of action.
Tacenda Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 four year old op, how did it turn out for the OP? He's coming back to the church.
Garden Girl Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 (edited) Is this more common than I might know? Not as often as hoped... but it does happen... for instance, I was inactive for 30+ years although the Spirit tugged at me from time to time until I finally heeded the promptings and began my return. That was about 19 years ago, and when I came back I was stronger than ever... and I've never looked back... GG Edited April 11, 2015 by Garden Girl
CCRW Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Yes, I read your comments to this effect, part of why I asked. I've also realized that there seems to be several members here that are my age and my senior (58). I need to be more mindful.
UtahTexan Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 The Stake President still does not ave paperwork...sigh And still no job offers. Hard not to be discouraged.

UtahTexan Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 Ok....Meeting with Stake President this Thursday.....6pm Central..... 3
Popular Post UtahTexan Posted April 28, 2015 Popular Post Posted April 28, 2015 The meeting took 90 minutes. I requested to have name removed in Nov 1989. The excommunication occurred in March 1990. The file was not totally complete. The Stake President could not understand why it went the way it did 4 months after my letter, but said it is what it is. Since it was a stake action, I will have to go through a stake counsel. He said he wanted a little time (a week or so) to pray. He will either be told by the Spirit to hold the Counsel soon or wait a little while. If the counsel decides I am to be baptized right away, then I will be. I bore my testimony. I explained the last 25 years. I sustained the leadership of the Church and I sustained him. I told him I would do whatever he said I need to do. So, at least I now know WHAT needs to happen, just not sure WHEN. I told him my plans to move Utah as soon as I find a job. He said he wanted to resolve all this prior to me moving, whenever that is. Funny thing…..my studies include the Book of Mormon, the Ensigns from 1971 forward and Conference talks from 1971 forward. The very first article in the first Ensign in 1971 was by President Harold B. Lee. He talked about the right way and timing to do everything. There is a process and a timing form everything. That article, when I read it last week, testified to me that I need to be patient and do everything right. I will do what needs to be as instructed by the Stake President. I took the missionaries to dinner last night. One is being transferred today. He asked me if he had taught me anything. I told him yes. He taught me that the Church is eternal. I told him that he was doing now what I was doing exactly 30 years ago. And each week, more enter the missionary program, and others leave. It is constant. It is eternal. Just like the Church. Please, keep me in your prayers. Keep y wife in your prayers. I love y’all. In His Grip, 5
Rain Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I would like to pray for things to go quickly, but know and said we need to trust in the Lord's timing, so I will pray that things will be cleared out of the way that may affect your stake president's inspiration reception and for you and your wife to grow stronger through whatever process you may go through.

David13 Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 This looks like an interesting story. With some similarities to my own. I'm intent on moving to Utah this year.I have visited several times for several years. I'm somewhat older than you, some similar background and also looking for new work. Something different. And converted (baptism) just this Sunday.dc 3
bluebell Posted April 29, 2015 Posted April 29, 2015 David, you should share what your skills are on here. You never know when one of the members might have a contact that will help in your search for work.

UtahTexan Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 ok...next step in the journey planned......My Stake Disciplinary Council is Sunday at 4:30. I am already getting nervous
Popular Post UtahTexan Posted May 18, 2015 Popular Post Posted May 18, 2015 The Council met with me last night. 90 minutes of questions. Never contentious. Very loving and caring. It was determined I could....no, SHOULD.....be baptized right away. 7
