I Am So Torn

Not to be a grammar or spelling Nazi or anything, but that's "Effective" not "Affective". "Affective" is of course a real word, but it doesn't mean "effective". Sorry, you stepped on my writer's toe.

Conversion has to involve the Book of Mormon, there's just no two ways about it. But Pres. Benson wanted to "flood" the earth with the Book of Mormon, and I don't think that happened. I believe we fell far short of doing what he asked -- maybe we put more emphasis on it than previously, but that wasn't what he meant, or what the Lord meant thru him. There have been some who have made a point of handing out copies to friends and relatives, but only relatively few have done so. And a personal connection with a person who gives out the book has a lot more going for it than some kind of unconnective distribution, like a TV ad for a free copy. The gap has to be bridged somehow, and a personal relationship seems necessary.

I do wonder what would happen if I had a billion dollars and used it to mail a copy of the BoM to everyone home in the United States. Along with some explanatory material, too. How many converts would result? I'd guess not too many. There's a million Bibles in hotels, courtesy of The Gideons, but I don't know how effective that has been either.

No worries. I can promise you I will step on your writer's toes again, no doubt. I was better at math and science than I was at grammar etc. LOL :D

Giving a talk in my SLC Ward on August 9   :)

Do you know as yet what the topic will be... or will you be able to give the previous BoM talk?

Update:  I have now lived in SLC for 4 months.  I do not regret giving up my 6-figure and house to move here.  I get up each morning and look at the mountains and am still in awe.  I still walk 5 miles each morning.  Since I have been here, I have visited Temple Square almost weekly.  I have also seen the Logan, Brigham City, Provo, Idaho Falls and Boise Temples.  I have been to "This is the Place" Park.  I have been to the Ensign on Ensign Peak.  I have eaten at Porter's Place (Porter Rockwell is one of my heroes).  I have been to Park City (where we watched Rocky Horror Picture Show last Friday.  I had not seen it since college days in the early 80s when I saw it about 50-60 times).  We have hiked in bells Canyon.  We have been to Antelope Island.  We went to the Honey Harvest Festival in Grantsville.  We even went to Snow Bird up 11000 feet.  We have taken pictures of buffalo, mule deer, and moose.   We attended the Utah State Fair and stood in line at the ATT Store in City Creek for the new Iphone.

I have given one talk and given my testimony.  I attended the last session of General Conference (my first Conference as a member since October 1989 and the first I watched as a member since in the MTC in October 1984).  I sang three songs I wrote at a Ward Dinner.

It has been an amazing 4 months.  I am incredibly blessed and my testimony has never been stronger......

Congratulations Brother.  It certainly feels good when the gospel is working in your life.  There is one thing you drove right by a temple on your way to Boise.  That would be the Twin Falls Idaho temple.  As a bonus when you go to it you get to see the Snake River canyon and its marvelous bridge.

Hi Steve,

I joined because I followed Moroni's Promise and (1) Remembered how good God had been to me, (2) Read parts of the Book of Mormon, (3) Pondered what those verse meant to me, and (4) prayed.  When I did the four steps, then I received my personal spiritual witness.  That witness from The Spirit of The Lord has carried me through.

Steve, try going to the Temple (The House of The Lord; Holiness unto The Lord), and just sit on the grounds outside the Temple for 15 minutes for three weeks in a row.  Each time you will feel, a little spiritual bump.

Fasting, also brings in a more pronounced portion of The Spirit of The Lord. Please see Mark 9:23-29; especially verse 29.

One of my hobbies is researching November 22nd.  If you ever hear of anything interesting down there in Dallas, please let me know.  810-424-0772

I went from extremely anti-LDS to being a very faithful LDS.....I am very happy

Just an update.....

I am now the Gospel Doctrine Teacher in my Ward.  I am eligible to request my blessings restored in 4 months.

I asked the Bishop, "why would you call someone to be the GD teacher who has only been LDS a few months?"  He responded, "I am not the one who called you."

That's great!  You'd be great, and you know a lot of the nitty gritty in Mormon History, lucky class.

Under 90 days......

My class is going well.....it gets fuller each week.  I teach the lessons, but we delve into words.  Like last week, the Goodness of Our God....we looked into the word Goodness.  What does it really mean?

We discussed it.  One of the dictionary definitions is "the best part of anything".  I asked, "Is Heavenly Father the best part of you?"  We talked about heaven.  I told them that we differ from the rest of Christianity.  They all want to go to heaven.....not us...we want to go BACK to heaven.

Anyway, it is a lot of fun and people seem to enjoy it.

I feel like the biggest fool. Here I am, 51 years old. I am a managing attorney. I was an officer in the Army. I am used to making decisions and sticking with them. I do not waffle. Yet, here I am. I am pulled so much to the LDS Church, but so many issues keep me away. I love the present LDS Church, but have many issues with the past. I love what appears to be current doctrines (or most of them), but have problems with older doctrines (or what they appear to be).

All I want to do is be where God wants me. Some days it almost seems like it is tearing me apart.

Not sure why I posted this. I expect folks will mock me, but there it is

If I have not said it before...we (including everyone ever called of God) all are flawed and mistakes are made. Although we are a new Church on the world stage, but many older doctrines or mistakes in other faiths made their way into ours. But, we usually always "right the Ark"...the strength in our faith is the restoration of the Priesthood and the Apostles, who one way are another have humility, or God finds a way to humble them. Hold to the iron rod and wait upon the Lord, the Church and the Apostles are here to guide us, not save us, that is the calling of Christ...and he is able a worthy of the task.

Did you not notice that the post you responded to was 5.5 years old?  And do you not know that stevedallas is now Country Boy?  Since starting this thread he has rejoined the Church and is going strong. :D

Ok...a week from today, the formal request to have my Blessings restored can be submitted.  The application has been filled out and I had my interview with the Bishop yesterday.  The application packet has been forwarded to the Stake President.  Once he interviews me (I hope this week) the packet can be forwarded to First Presidency.

No, I have been off line and out of the country for a week, so forgive...I just noticed the thread when I pulled up the Social Hall. Glad to hear the happy news. I make too many of these mistakes. :(

Tomorrow is a big day.

I sing a solo (a song I wrote) in Sacrament Meeting.

I teach my Gospel Doctrine Class

I have an interview with the Stake President

I give a Fireside at a ward near Provo

On Monday, assuming the Stake President is on board, my Request to Have my Blessings Restored will be forwarded to the First Presidency.

ok....today was really busy.  Sang a song I wrote in Sac Meeting, then taught Gospel doctrine.  Great class.  Then had my interview with Stake President.  He is forwarding my paperwork tomorrow to the First Presidency.

The Fireside was great.  The Young Woman's President told their Bishop that she was about to give up on her Master's due to so many conflicts, but my talk inspired her to never give up.  One person told their bishop it was the best fireside he had ever attended.  One teen told me she had planned to doodle the whole time but could not stop listening......and those are just a few of comments passed along to me.

All in all, it was a busy, but awesome day.  Now, it is just a waiting game to get my Blessings restored.

I'm so glad it was such a day, CB... How did your song go?   The words are beautiful... can/will you share?  So glad the Fireside went well and that you were able to touch some hearts... :)

I went back and read your first opening post and several after that, on this thread in 2011.  Wow, that's a big turnaround.  Do you share that with your audience in your talks, how you once struggled to believe?  I'm thinking that you probably hold more attention if you share your own personal stories.  As long as there are no embellishments.  I would hope speakers today, will watch what they say and be as honest as possible, no matter how boring they think their story is.  I'm reading a book about Paul H. Dunn, and lying in his talks. That's why I brought that up, and it made me think of it when I read that they enjoyed your talk or fireside talk, and they weren't doodling but listening intently.  I'm sure you didn't embellish though.

Anyway, good job, very happy for you!

I have sometimes wished to compose a song about my joy in Gospel and about my love for the Lord, but I never quite seem able to come up with the words.  I am not a poet, and poetry seems called for in aid of doing this thing.  I am so glad that you were able to come up with words and music for such a song!  Perhaps one day, I, too, will be able to do something similar.
