The Book Of Mormon Musical

The correct context being that it needs to be a consensus informed opinion.

What do the people who hand out Tonys know about Mormonism, really?

They weren't awarding Mormonism, they were awarding a play. Unless you feel Mormonism is a fiction worthy of award.

Though I didn't watch the Tony Awards, I did read in the LA Times review that Trey Parker thanked Joseph Smith as a co-writer during his acceptance speech for "Best Musical"

It was very funny.

"You did it Joe. Ya' got the Tony!"

Case in point?

I think so!

I see you agree with the congregation that shunned my good Stake President. Nice, bukowski, very nice.

You're getting farther out by the minute.

Having been born in the covenant, well, my religion was essentially picked for me.

Oh, poor you!

Nobody picked the religion they were born with.

I don't doubt you think Mormonism is a fiction.

But do try to concentrate, please. The point is not that they were "awarding Mormonism," whatever that is supposed to mean. The point is that they were awarding plaudits to a play for mocking Mormonism.

The question of whether or not the mockery in that play exceeds acceptable parameters of minority-targeting cannot be settled by those who know essentially nothing about the minority being targeted.

But hey--why should you care? It's not as if the play mocks anything important to you, is it?

Way to add to the discussion Pahoran

I presume you meant that ironically. Evidently you don't think it adds to any discussion to attribute a "persecution complex" to an entire group of people.

I agree; that is ironic.

If any of the minority around here have seen the play, they haven't stepped forward and said, "Hey! I saw it AND it is a mockery!". So the minority knows essentially nothing about the play. I guess it's ***-for-tat.

I don't know if the play mocks anything I care about. I care about many Mormons. I care less about the corporation. I guess I'll have to go see the show myself to see if it mocks anyone I know.

It mocks beliefs, and blasphemes God, but you're right, it probably doesn't mock any people that you actually know so you shouldn't have any issues with it.

I can't imagine it's that simplistic. When you saw it, did you think it was that simplistic?

Sigh. That's a really, really sad comment, from several angles.

Sad? Don't feel sad for me. I love the friends and family I have made in the church. I still love the gospel of Christ. But the church? I need to trust that it's claims are true, and I feel they aren't. And don't feel sad for me because of that - I am happy.

I haven't seen it-but i've heard the songs, which mock beliefs and swear at God using the ugliest swear word possible. I know for some people (and i'm not being self righteous here) they can find deeper meaning in such ugliness and blind themselves to it in favor of seeing it in a different way-that's why i sincerely don't think you would have a problem with it.

I'm not like that though. I can't find deeper meaning in things that i find offensive, even if the deeper meaning really is there.

I'm sad for you whether you're happy right now or not.

From LDS Toronto's take, it apparently means that unless you have committed an act of pedophilia, how can you judge anything to be wrong with it? I mean to paraphrase Toronto.. if any of the minority around here have experienced pedophilia, they haven't stepped forward and said "Hey I experienced it AND it was something you shouldn't do".

Did we get the point across you were trying to make Toronto? Have we produced the essence of that keen Canadian mind that must experience all things to judge them as being good or not? Is it the quality of the judgement you are seeking?

Just wondering....

Are you sure they understand the depth of the contempt you possess for the religion they hold as sacred? Or do you merely laugh at them behind their backs for their naivete? You are the worst kind of friend they could have. Your lack of respect is something you keep hidden from those around you in order to facilitate false companionship, which you apparently revel in. This is part of why your statements evoke a rather sad note in some here, who wonder at the kind of person you have chosen to become.

I read where MItt Romney said he had not yet seen the play but was going to see it. I found that interesting. From all I've heard, the play (if it were a movie) would be rated R. I guess Mitt can separate his religious life from his public life . . .

Where did you hear that, Mark? I would be surprised, actually, if he did go see it.

I read it on either MSNBC.com or CNN.com the day after the awards.

Heck, I even see people stating that this broadway play is some sort of jab at the LDS for their stance on Prop 8.....heck, even Trey Parker would have a difficult time making some of this stuff up.

Orgazmo.

Then, he'll probably get the opportunity to answer questions about what he thought of it. I hope he finds it shallow, offensive, and amusing to some, but not to him. "Two Thumbs down"
