Nor mine

Have your parents told you they would rather you be dead than not serve a mission??? Church teaching? Well if one considers not serving a mission to be loss of virtue then yea.

“Marion G. Romney reported that his father said the following to him just as he was boarding the train to go on a mission:

My son, you are going a long way from home. Your mother and I, and your brothers and sisters, will be with you constantly in our thoughts and prayers; we shall rejoice with you in your successes, and we shall sorrow with you in your disappointments. When you are released and return, we shall be glad to greet you and welcome you back into the family circle. But remember this, my son: we would rather come to this station and take your body off the train in a casket than to have you come home unclean, having lost your virtue.”

have yours? or others of your "Mormon Power family"?  and this doesn't have anything to do with who the new PR director is anyways. Besides, I thought you were moving on

Oaks apparently would not unless perhaps as someone else mentioned.. act as if they are just friends and not in a relationship… so lie about it.

Oaks didn’t say the couple had to act as just friends.  And you wouldn’t have to lie, just introduce using names without explanations.  The person they are introducing the couple to can figure it out for themselves if they care to.

Doing the intro line that with the intent to deceive is lying. Why hide it? Make everyone think your family is more righteous than it really is? My family would totally do that. 100% about appearances. In the case above we have to make the apostle look as good as possible… I mean everyone knows they can’t be caught dead associating with a gay family member. What would Jesus do? Lie? Present a false impression? Nope he introduce them… these are my friends / son etc.

this kind of mentality needs to go away. That is why I am in support of this new hire. It is a breath of fresh air. We will be taken more seriously as the Christians we say we are if we treat others as Christ would.

No. But then neither does your quote.  Please re-read for comprehension.  The talk refers to missionaries — those who DO serve missions — but return home in a state of sin.

I don’t particularly like or agree with President Romney’s sentiments here:  I would rather have my son or daughter come home alive no matter the reason.  But I agree with President Romney that choosing a life of sin is a kind of death, and I would rather my children are alive both physically and spiritually.

i am praying for you Diamond —whether you want it or not.

If a person is in an open marriage, I am not endorsing it, but I see no reason why there would be any reason to deny they are married.  There is however a ton of reason not to brag about how wonderful the relationship is and what a good example they are to everyone else.

It is not an endorsement to say people are married.

I realize there is a percentage of members who won’t accept the validity of same sex marriage at all when even the Church does in terms of civic law, there are probably others who accept the legality but refuse to engage with anyone in that context out of fear of others thinking they are endorsing SSM.  I suspect the majority though have no problem like Elder Oaks in supporting the legality and rights of same sex marriage and in interacting with friends and relatives in same sex relationships as loved ones with whom they disagree just as they probably wouldn’t insist their loved one go change their shirt if it happened to endorse a political candidate or position they didn’t hold instead of being obsessed that someone might assume because they were standing next to a guy with a shirt saying “I voted for….” that they also voted for that.

What intro with the intent to deceive?

There is no instruction that either the couple or the parents have to pretend the couple is not a couple and I assume most gay couples are like straight couples, they don’t have to say anything as it is obvious they are a couple.

Simply refusing to introduce them as a couple is not deception when it is obvious they are.  It is a way to express disagreement, though overly rigid for my taste.

It would be like going to a ball game and the entire family is in the school colors except for one who is wearing the other team’s colors.  Dad introduces all the kids with his school shirt on as proud alumni or supporters of said school and then turns to the last and says “this is my son, Mike”.  No one is pretending Mike is not on the opposition team for the game, Dad is just choosing not to brag about it nor to act like it’s a big deal that the son is a traitor to family tradition or whatever.

^^^^^^^
this one. Introducing them so the other party doesn’t know they are married. I don’t do that with my married friends.. hi nice to see y’all again. This here is my friend Peter and his wife Molly.

I guess you are different when it comes to introducing strangers to each other. When my wife and I are out and we run into someone either of us know we always introduce our other half as my wife or husband. Not .. oh yes this is my friend lol

That may be ok with you but it is deceptive.

He’s absolutely not saying that not serving a mission is the same as losing virtue. He’s talking about actually doing something very sinful while serving and being dishonorably released.

Now do I agree with that, no, absolutely not.  But I personally know a sister who was baptized in college against her mother’s wishes, and a couple months later was impregnated by the elder that baptized her. So there are some pretty horrible decisions that Missionaries can make that cause a lot of trauma and harm to the people around them. Even though I don’t agree with it, I can see why some might view it better for their child to die in some accident, then live, and do so much damage to themselves and others through their choices.

I know the context in which he uses it. Many families also consider coming home early from a mission is losing one’s virtue. Virtue doesn’t only refer to the law of chastity. Much like people will claim virgin doesn’t really mean virgin when it comes to plural marriage.

not going on a mission is looked at as disobeying the lord, and therefore not a virtuous act. It is not keeping the high standard picked out for you by others.

look up virtue in the dictionary. It means many things.

in my family… a non rm is pretty much the worse thing you can be.

if lack of being an Eagle Scout is any indicator - not having your Eagle as a male back in the day was used as a prediction one will pretty much be a loser.

There are those who misread/misapply doctrine and then there are those who not only dive into the deep end but dig a hole in the bottom of the pool.

That is so sad. I’m sorry you were raised like that.  It sounds like a hard way to grow up.

I have a 19 year old son who has chosen not to serve and I don’t see that as impacting his virtue in the slightest. I’m so thankful that no one else does either (including our wonderful bishop who’s helping him prepare to receive his endowment).

Hopefully everything goes well. My son who was not sure about going had pressure galore that I've mentioned before on here. He was traumatized pretty hard, luckily I think this has changed in how forceful they are. It just doesn't work, now my son has resigned from the church. I was sad about that believe it or not. I'm glad your son's experience is so much better. And I really like your way of parenting of him bluebell. I'm sure he appreciates your attitude about it.

I’ve been able to follow the examples of my parents and grandparents, in how to parent kids who are walking their own path. I’m very thankful that I was shown growing up how to love people who are making decisions you wouldn’t choose.

I was blessed with people in my life who taught me to focus on the overview picture long before Sister Runia gave that talk in general conference in October (one of my absolute favorite talks ever).

Sometimes remembering that is the only thing that gets me through. 😊

“Do you support or promote any teachings, practices, or doctrine contrary to those of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?”

This harks back to and is a restatement of the old TR interview question that referred specifically to apostate groups (including RLDS), or groups that were practicing polygamy. They've just genericized it.

When Washington state held a referendum over whether to legalize marijuana, my TBM wife and I felt it was perfectly OK to vote yes. We didn't feel it violated our TR status.

Here is the new hire for church communication.

it would appear he openly and publicly supports gay marriage. He also formerly worked for Phillip Morris ( big tobacco).

where in the world did the church find him? What a breath of fresh air. Someone who supports the lgbtq agenda.

My only concern is he seems very political. I hope his personal politics doesn't bleed into the job.

Oddly, for the first time I heard a radio advertisement for BYU on my radio station. Weird. Do they really need to advertise on am radio in Colorado?

The best way to promote your product is to HIRE YOUR COMPETITOR'S HIGHEST SALESMAN

You wanna sell Fords?

Hire Chevy's PR guy

I think he's smart enough to not allow that to happen

To attend BYU. Why spend money on that? They have plenty of applicants.

And it wasn’t one of the ‘finish the degree you didn’t complete’ ads either.

Maybe it was a student project

Or someone trying to justify not laying off some of their staff due to lack of work.
