blackstrap Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) It seems Canadians are ahead of the curve...again. Michael Higgins: Catholic school has student arrested for expressing Catholic beliefs (msn.com) Note: this headline is misleading...duh Edited February 9, 2023 by blackstrap
OGHoosier Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Quote James Kitchen, a lawyer from the Liberty Defense Fund which is representing Josh, said in a statement that the student was told he could only return to school “if he agreed not to use the ‘dead name’ of any transgender student and agreed to exclude himself from his two afternoon classes because those classes are attended by two transgender students who disapprove of Josh’s religious beliefs.” Who disapprove of Josh's religious beliefs? Is that all? Is that it? Who gave them the right to dictate who can be in class with them? That school's administration is weak. 1
Calm Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) The arrest for trespassing seems a legit reason to me. Given the writer’s bias, I would like to hear the other side’s explanation for why he was barred from attending those classes. As given, it seems very odd for a Catholic school. My guess is there is more to the story. Edited February 9, 2023 by Calm 2
Popular Post Calm Posted February 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) Quote The school accused Alexander of refusing to use transgender students' chosen names, and said he could only return to school if he agreed to sit out two classes attended by trans students, who found his views offensive…. James S.M. Kitchen, the chief litigator, wrote to the school principal on January 6 saying that forcing Alexander to deny his religious beliefs was discrimination. The principal responded by excluding the teenager from school for the rest of the term, arguing that 'his presence in the school or classroom would be detrimental to the physical or mental well-being of the pupils,' The Western Standard reported…. Kitchen said the school also accused Alexander of bullying. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11725303/Teenager-ARRESTED-attending-class-suspended-challenging-transgender-ideas.html So it wasn’t for his beliefs according to the school, but for deadnaming two students, being barred from classes those students attended, protesting through a lawyer, being suspended and then insisting on attending. Possibly something more depending on if it is the deadnaming that is the bullying or something else. Edited February 9, 2023 by Calm 6
Popular Post The Nehor Posted February 9, 2023 Popular Post Posted February 9, 2023 Calling people by the name they choose to use is not contrary to Catholic doctrine. Josh just sounds like a cantankerous jerk. 7

Big improvement from the days when Christians were fighting for their God given right to chattel slavery. 1

The allegation was merely that he was refusing to use the transgendered students chosen names. He could have simply refused to use their preferred names and instead persisted in referring to them using a nickname or some other appellation. That's still kind of a jerk thing to do though. 3
Dario_M Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 I also find that a jerk thing to do that on that way indeed.
LoudmouthMormon Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 (edited) Arresting/suppressing/silencing people for being jerks is not a good look, or a good road to walk down, or something that will end well. (Source - an awful lot of recorded history like this.) Edited February 9, 2023 by LoudmouthMormon

This is the crux of the issue in my opinion. Vocally disagreeing with someone is not harassment (even when it comes to this topic), but people can disagree in ways that are. So, was he suspended because of actual harassment or was he suspended because he was vocal in his disagreement? I don't think we're going to be able to figure that out from the information that we have. There's too much bias from both sides on this issue for the reporting of the events to be trustworthy. My gut instinct is that if you are bullying transgender classmates to the point a Catholic school thinks this has gone way too far then you have gone pretty far. I could be wrong though. Also free speech is not a thing in public schools in America and Canada doesn’t have a First Amendment. 1

Many ways to refuse to comply with a transgender chose name like saying "Hey you" or just leaving out the name all together. That is what I would do. I am not going to pretend that men are women or women are men. I have a right not to play this game but it can be done in a respectful way without compromising ones principles. Perhaps if students are just given numbers in school and they will be referred to by a given number, that takes care of the whole problem. Edited February 10, 2023 by carbon dioxide

Taking the split of names between masculine and feminine and assigning these arbitrary distinctions as important and a line you will not cross is kind of weird. Yes, assign numbers. Dehumanization and purging of identity of literal children will surely go over very well. 1
