I do know from sad experience that troubled times make evil people more likely to act on that evil. A lot of the ‘data’ used to show police are in greater danger silently puts covid deaths under dying in the ‘line of duty… I love my nation’s ideals. The nation I love is partly a dream: “Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame, With conquering limbs astride from land to land; Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame. "Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" I think of how God would bless such a nation. Then I realize that most do not want it. There was a time that all would agree that the poem was a good ideal. Now it is seen as a weapon like almost everything else. Then again, I am a Gen Xer and embrace my stereotypical role so I am unlikely to be part of the solution: Just a few things… No COVID is not to blame for everything (or most things), but I did not bring up “COVID” as an excuse for some things, you did, as it relates to crime. Quote For the second year in a row, Covid-19 was the leading cause of death for law enforcement officers in the United States, according to a report released on Tuesday by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. A total of 458 officers died in the line of duty in the country last year, making it the deadliest year in more than 90 years and a 55 percent increase from 2020, according to preliminary data compiled by the organization. Of those, it found that 301 federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers had died because of Covid-19. “It has been reported to NLEOMF that these officers have died due to direct exposure to the virus during the commission of their official duties,” the report said. Felony assaults were responsible for the deaths of 84 officers last year, including 62 officers killed with firearms, the report said. Fifty-eight were killed in traffic-related incidents while working the roadways. Both the number of deaths from firearm assaults and traffic-related fatalities had risen from the previous year…. The remaining deaths were attributed to reasons such as heart attacks, strokes and 9/11-related illnesses, the report said. Other officers were killed in beatings, drownings and stabbings. One officer was killed by floodwaters, and another was killed in a tornado. In the three decades before the pandemic, the organization’s annual tally of officers killed in the line of duty surpassed 200 only twice, in 2001 and 2007. The last time it went above 300 was in 1930. So 157 died of other causes and 301 died of Covid. https://www.nytimes.com/2022/01/12/us/police-officer-deaths-covid.html If you are going to count increase in deaths by violence, you should probably remove any nonviolent deaths. Calm Posted February 4, 2022 Posted February 4, 2022 This is probably a better measure of increase in violence: Quote Nationally, 60,105 law enforcement officers were assaulted while performing their duties in 2020. These assaults were reported to the FBI by 9,895 law enforcement agencies. Based on these reports, there were 4,071 more officers assaulted in 2020 than the 56,034 assaults reported in 2019. https://www.fbi.gov/contact-us/field-offices/dallas/news/press-releases/fbi-releases-statistics-for-law-enforcement-officers-assaulted-and-killed-in-the-line-of-duty

I must have misstated what I was trying to covey. When I spoke of the “war on the Police”, he said there was no war, then quoted COVID (or provided a link, I never read) as the greatest killer. I was taking about the 24 shot, and 4 of those who died in January alone. Obviously, when I spoke, or speak of “war”, it would seem clear I was speaking of those shot and killed. I never suggested that I was speaking of COVID deaths, I was speaking of NEHOR making reference of COVID being the larger number of deaths. Unless I did so, out of some out of body experience, as I had no idea of any Police Officers dying of COVID, much less how many. Therefore, I don’t know where I wrote or mentioned this, I was only responding to his post. Maybe, I did so accidentally, but (again) not intentionally, as (again) I did not know of it, and certainly not the number. I will go back and see if I can find where I did so, then edit this post. I went back, it was NEHOR who said deaths we up due to COVID, I replied that “I am not speaking of COVID”, I then went on to make my case. In fact, in my last reply I made it clear I was speaking of shootings, and deaths in January 2022 alone. 24 shootings, with 4 dead in 31 days. If that is not a war against (or one) The Police, I don’t know what is. Sadly a few of these were in Atlanta, or greater Georgia. You know you are my favorite poster, so if I am in error, and counted COVID-19, please show me my error. Edited February 4, 2022 by Bill “Papa” Lee 1

carbon dioxide Posted February 13, 2022 Posted February 13, 2022 (edited) Wars, famine, plagues, floods, earthquakes, ect have been occurring since man arrived on the earth. Why make these things a sign of the last days when they are just normal events? I believe they are signs because the last days occurrence of these things are not normal events. They are occurring at a much greater scale and speed than what has normally occurred. Which is on reason I see climate change playing a role in these things. Having a famine in some part of the world is normal. Having a half dozen or a dozen famines going in in different parts of the world at the same time is not normal. Wars will increase because as drought or other problem affects a country, that will cause economic and political chaos in that country. That can increase the risk of civil war. The Syrian civil war was largely started because of drought. Refugees pour out of these countries into other countries. That outflow can cause political instability in those countries which can lead to other nations to collapse. So a domino effect can occur in these things. We tend to think of our modern societies as strong and able to withstand challenges that are brought before us. We are not as strong as we think. I don't care how much technology we develop. Reduce the food and power supply and we are not far off from chaos and collapse. Earthquakes is another thing. Those happen from time to time. What I find interesting is we have a number of large and powerful fault lines spread across the US that are overdue for very large quakes. In the past these quakes only shook trees and dirt. When these things go this time, they will shake a lot of buildings and other infrastructure that was not present the last time they snapped. We could easily see several very large quakes in the US this century that are going to cause significant damage that we have not seen since the founding of the nation. I read somewhere that it was bureaucratic inertia that led to things getting out of control. We have had some close nuclear calls but the situation has changed a bit. A conflict is unlikely to trigger an ‘accidental’ attack. It might cause a deliberate one. World War 1 came due to hypernationalism, new kid on the block Germany chomping at the bit to prove itself, Austria-Hungary wanting to whip the Slavs in their nation in line by taking out independent Serbia to solidify their weird unstable nation, and Serbia itself being run by a bunch of certifiable lunatics. There is more of course. France wanted Alsace-Lorraine back from Germany. Russia was completely unprepared. Their rearmament program needed another two years at least to be ready for war. The German invasion of Belgium virtually guaranteed the British joining the conflict. Everyone thought a short quick war would be won, get some demands and some national prestige, and everyone will be home by Christmas. The Europeans learned nothing from the American Civil War. In the current situation Russia would be stupid to make a move unless internal conditions for the current regime are much shakier than we know and they need a victory. Russia cannot fight a long conflict. They don’t have the money. If they invade Ukraine the sanctions will likely be brutal. We are talking all Russian overseas assets frozen, no ability to work with foreign banks, trade stifled, and just a colossal mess. Standards of living in Russia will fall. If Russia doesn’t get a knockout blow quickly they could easily see a military and/or political collapse. Nuclear launch might occur out of desperation to score a victory in Ukraine. Then things get dicey. The US and NATO directly intervening is unlikely. All indications are that if Russia grabs Ukraine they will face guerilla action that will make the US adventures in Afghanistan and Iraq look economically sustainable by comparison. Even the ethnic Russians who speak Russian in the Ukraine have been making it clear they don’t want Russia to ‘liberate’ them. The knock-on effects will cause problems in other regions. Russia is the biggest supplier of weapons to India and China and India have been dealing with border skirmishes lately. China could up the ante there and have their satellite Pakistan do the same. An attack on Taiwan is unlikely though some kind of blockade or seizing Taiwan’s other island holdings closer to China’s coast are possible. Putin’s main goal is to politically break NATO. With the unrest and instability in the US and Canada, the harsh fallout from Brexit, and Covid wearing away solidarity everywhere Putin might see this as his big chance. I don’t think it will go well for Russia though. Edited February 13, 2022 by The Nehor 4

The Nehor Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 6 hours ago, rodheadlee said: So who made money off the phony war and the stock market burp? The big winner is the military industrial complex with all the sold weapons. It is not clear if it is phony. Large-scale cyber attack just started against Ukrainian banks and their defense ministry. This is what we would see if they were planning to invade but it doesn’t mean an invasion is imminent. It could be a test of their response, a bit of brinksmanship throwing their weight around before backing off, or any number of things. Wednesday was the day that the German press were reporting was the slated day for an attack based on intelligence a few days back but that might have been disinformation or the plans could have changed. If it is entirely phony the loser is Russia. They spent a lot of money getting their military readied and deployed. Preparing for a possible attack is not cheap. 2
The Nehor Posted February 16, 2022 Posted February 16, 2022 Russia has stated they are withdrawing because their “exercises” are over but I will believe it when I see it. It looks less likely that Russia will attack based on their domestic propaganda. They are currently spinning the whole thing as the West overreacting to their “exercises” and basically tell the Russian people that the NATO powers are a bunch of dummies. Basically laying the groundwork for being able to back down and Putin can say he won. It is hard to pivot directly from saying the whole build-up never happened to telling people that the build up that wasn’t happening is now being used to attack. It is not all sunshine and roses though. Russia is keeping the invasion option open. To pull off a pivot they need a cassus belli to justify the pivot and Russian media is still playing up the idea that Russian people are the victims of genocide in the eastern provinces of Ukraine. If they need to pivot they can manufacture some false flag atrocity or just make it up and invade to occupy the eastern provinces of Ukraine to ‘protect’ the people. The Duma (Russia’s equivalent of Congress but it largely does what Putin orders) recently passed a resolution encouraging Putin to recognize two sovereign states within the Ukraine as independent. Putin has not acted on this but he could combine that license with some provocation as justification for intervention. Depending on the severity of the atrocity the Russians could shoot for just occupying the eastern provinces or the more difficult task of occupying the whole nation. If they do set up a provocation they want it to be convincing enough to divide world opinion. This is fairly standard and there have been successful cassus belli that kept other nations out of the conflict. This is unlikely to work in this case. There have also been some provocations that were so farcical that no one believed them. Think Hitler trying to justify the invasion of Poland by claiming the Polish attacked a German radio station. There is also a sick sense of hypocrisy in the whole thing considering how Russia has treated some of those taken in the Crimean occupation and the conflicts along the border the Russians have been instigating. One case I followed was a 16 year old kid who spoke out against Russia meddling in his nation. He was tortured for weeks and later executed. And I just saw some more Russian propaganda claiming the Ukrainian army basically crucified a three year old kid on a notice board as an example at a refugee camp. Nothing corroborates the story. They are also playing up Ukraine being run by a fascist junta government to stir up reminders of World War 2. Disgusting stuff. 2
The Nehor Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 And here we go. Russia is attempting to legitimize the breakaway parts of Ukraine their surrogates have occupied since 2014. Russian troops are moving in as 'peacekeepers'. There was a pre-recorded video of Putin talking with his advisors to justify this. I have seen a lot of Putin footage and he looked pretty unhinged compared to before. Not sure if it is the stress of this crisis or if he is losing it upstairs or if he is under a lot of pressure and his own position is in danger which is why he is trying this gamble. Many of his advisors came across as shell-shocked and had a reluctant 'are we really gonna do this' look in their eyes. I expect shooting to start soon on some pretext, probably manufactured. If it happens it will be the biggest European war since that irrascible fellow ruined the Charlie Chaplin mustache a while back. Russian stock market and their currency are already plummeting. Except for some of the elite units the Russian army's morale is low. If previous Russian doctrine is followed the soldiers are already trying to trade tanks and APCs for booze. In the future we can expect some amusing footage of tanks being used to plough fields in Belarus. In addition the unrest back in Kazakhstan is heating up again. Putin has to move soon or back off and the latter is unlikely. There isn't a graceful exit strategy at this point. The US and NATO have put sanctions on the claimed separatist regions and have basically frozen them out of international markets. There are other sanctions ready to hit as soon as the shooting starts. They are only being held back now on the odd chance Russia backs down. Throwing the sanctions up now would basically force Putin to attack. These are designed to isolate Russia and freeze their assets including the assets of the oligarchs that run everything that they have stashed overseas. The wildcard right now is China. They could prop the Russians up if they chose to but the incentives are low. This risks China getting hit by sanctions and China is also leery of supporting breakaway states propped up within a nation's acknowledged borders and being legitimized. *stage whisper* "Taiwan" My guess is China will back off and watch. If the sanctions are severe enough they will sit tight. If the response falls apart they might try to assist Russia quietly while possibly amping up their conflict on India's border. 3
