This does not sound promising. But, great advice to appreciate your loved ones and friends and associations.

At our ward council we discussed the limitations of digital associations and conversations and the impact on our ward family.

There is also the simple fact of moving that changes the dynamics of friendships dramatically.

He might even be referring to the inevitable ward boundary changes. ;)

I think he is setting a good example to all members to adhere to social distancing during this pandemic.  I also read into this the importance he places on friendships.  I agree with this. IMO we are social animals and we derive joy and purpose by being with and helping others.

As an aside, could this Instagram post by Holland be considered a hologram?

This is his recent General Conference talk, so maybe Instagram is a follow-up for folks who missed conference? or tend to dismiss Instagram less than conference?

I agree with Pogi.  I read the second to last sentence as Elder Holland acknowledging the reality that even without other factors (like lockdowns and other life events) we are all parted from our loved ones and friends eventually, for a time, through death.  The parting is inevitable for all of us.

What!?!?!  You mean to tell me the 12 apostles of our Lord don't meet together at least once a week, every week, at some big table in comfortable chairs!!?!?!... even while this COVID-19 thing is going on!?!?!

I've been envisioning them all around a table, probably I guessed a big round table, even if the the chairs had to be spaced 6' apart from each other.

I am going to blame technology.  I bet if they didn't have computers with internet connections they would find a way to meet together in person.

Is there a problem if they don’t?

Sometimes we are too quick to see apocalyptic significance where no such significance is intended.

If the Brethren have urgent warnings for us, I believe they will state them clearly through established channels (general conference, official communications to and through priesthood leadership), not couch them in cryptic wording in social media posts.

I agree, but psychologically I think we create personal meanings out of general statements all the time.  I think this remark has no significance, yet for some, in their mental state, may need to take it literally or read into it whatever they need to believe in their personal lives

And I do not mean for "mental states" to be taken as something pathological, just as a personal interpretation for a statement originally intended to be general.

That's why I think that the "author's intent" for any statement may not necessarily be taken as the most important possible interpretation that someone else may find.

You are going to thank technology for the fact that the quorum of 12 apostles is not able to safely meet together in person or because they do not have the means to solve that problem without a miracle from God?  Exactly what are you thankful for?

I am going to thank technology for allowing them to meet together without the associated risks.

There is no reason to blame technology for anything here.  It is not technologies fault that a bunch of elderly people meeting together in person is not safe right now.

I think you missed my point, and it was a bit tongue in cheek. I was thinking that if it were not for technology the apostles would have found a way to meet together safely, but with technology being as it now is, they can manage without meeting in person.

These are the apostles of the Lord we are talking about, with the power of our Lord's priesthood, so if they needed to get rid of COVID-19 to be able to do the Lord's work I'm sure they would be able to do it.

Not without technology assisting them.

In the meantime, we can thank technology for allowing them to meet together safely.

What?!?!  Are you now telling me that without technology the apostles would not be able to figure out how to all be in the same place at the same time?!?!

Sure, they might not travel as far, but I'm sure with their intellect they could all figure out how to all be in the same place.

Yeah, but... nevermind.

So perplexed?  Maybe a tiny bit of perplexed.  No big deal.  If you don't know then you just don't know.

Why do you assume that?  Why do you not assume they would have chosen to write letters?  Why do you assume they would insist on doing something miraculous if it was not necessary?

Don’t forget in the past Apostles were traveling all over and many were gone for months at a time, maybe even years doing missionary work in England and elsewhere.

I don't consider it an assumption.  Just an idea that they would probably figure out a way how to meet together in person if meeting in person would be the best way for them to do the Lord's work together and they had no other way to work in real time together.

Technology in communications makes it a lot easier to find a way to avoid meeting together in person, but in person contact is usually easier and more satisfying.  Holland even said so in the text quoted in the OP.  He was missing in person contact, looking forward to being able to meet together in person again, and yet technology was stepping in and making it easier to find another way to try to get the job done.  If he and they didn't have those technological "helps" though I bet they would think more about what they could do to get together in person again, and sooner. rather than just getting by with the chosen technological replacements.

Letters through snail mail take almost forever to reach their destination.  They can be okay sometimes when timing is not very important; or when technology doesn't offer a better solution.  Twitter or other e-text services are quicker and I'm sure they all have a phone to work with.

Okay, so, I use hyperbole sometimes.  I confess.  Kill me if you have to.  At least I don't use hyperbole as much as Donald Trump does.  But then again probably nobody does.

As I added to my post, at times in the past the apostles were not a complete group for months and even years at a time due to some being in elsewhere on the continent or overseas as well as apostasy....in a time with no long distance communication besides letters that took weeks or more to arrive. And yet they were able to do what needed to be done.
