Being freaked out and concerned for the vulnerable are two different things. After 200,000 deaths and counting, I think it is time that some start being concerned, don't you think? We should be concerned when anyone over the age of 65 is infected. Odds are he will be fine, but there is no guarantee. Should we be judged for being concerned? President Nelson is in excellent health. There is a very high chance he would die if he was exposed. Elder Gongs age and proximity to the rest of the brethren should be concerning to all of us. Luckily, he was quarantined in the nick of time before conference, or things could have been very different. Most over 65 have at least one comorbidity. Even people in relatively good health die from this. No one is freaking out here that I can see. You are building a strawman. I’m curious why you think President Nelson would have “a very high chance” of dying from Covid. You say he’s in good health and the numbers show that fewer than 2 in 10 of people over 85 who get Covid die of it.

If even 1 out of every 10 die from this disease, wouldn’t you consider that a very high chance of dying from it? The figure you give is an average. 85 years old is much lower risk then 96 years old. His risk is going to be higher then 2 in 10. That is over a 1 in 5 chance of dying from it. That is why. Edited October 7, 2020 by pogi

The Nehor Posted October 7, 2020 Posted October 7, 2020 “Treating it as a death sentence” is severe but some assume low odds make it fine. A friend of mine had just started teaching his kids to play games. His son was complaining about not being able to play with his friends so the dad threw him a 20-sided die and told him that if he went out he would probably only get Covid on a 1 and someone would only die in the house if he rolled a 1 again. The kid got the point. While statistically unlikely it is not lottery winning odds. Those rare rolls happen. They happen quite a bit. They happen often if you roll dice a lot (i.e. go out and get exposed a lot). Some people seem unable to be moderately worried. They seem to be in either freak-out mode or ignore it as unlikely. Not sure if some people just have trouble with ambiguity or what. I have been working on this scenario to see how I react to it: I think part of the reason we have more trouble with it is the nature of the threat. Suppose we had news that a lot of ex-Viet Cong had snuck over to the United States and were roaming our neighborhoods shooting at people. Fortunately they are all very old now and most have terrible eyesight and have trouble hitting center mass or the head. They do have a weird code of honor and anyone they have previously shot cannot be shot at again for an undetermined period. They also can only shoot someone who spends time near a previous target. We can confirm they have shot 7 and a half million people. Some they missed. Some they hit but the damage was minor. Some got badly wounded and will carry the scar for the rest of their life. Over 211,000 have died from the bullet wound or complications caused by the wound. Would we want to open everything up and send the kids to school? Would we have people saying that wearing a flak vest was a violation of their constitutional rights or that it was just too hot to wear. Would we shoot for herd immunity and hope they run out of targets they can honorably shoot and just give up? What is different about it being a disease that has similar effects? I am actually genuinely curious. I would be more scared in the Viet Cong scenario but the threat is pretty much the same. Is it the human malice? 9/11 has still ongoing security precautions that can be very invasive but it was much less dangerous than the pandemic. Humans are strange. 1

Kengo is wrong. Close contacts, within 48 hours of symptom onset and while symptomatic, will be investigated and should be notified and placed on quarantine for two weeks from last contact. 2

Nobody has to tell me how serious the damn virus is. I have locked myself in my apartment for the last six months except to buy food and to run other errands that I can count on one, or perhaps both, hands (I suppose I owe a huge apology to anyone I might've infected on those ten occasions!) I was told by someone today that at her son's junior high they don't want anyone to even say if they have covid, just to make sure to stay home. I guess if the numbers shoot up then they have to close the schools, I'll bet this is happening at more than this junior high, what do you think? It sounded like it was coming from the school..I was a little shocked.
