The Savior and Temples

Recommended Posts

Heard a rumor / myth / legend / idea that the Savior visited and ministered to the people, after his visit to the Book of Mormon peoples, at locations that today have Temples on them?  particularly in Hawaii, aisles of the sea (Polynesia), possibly at the BYU HI Center are where I heard this theory.

Any of you experts care to comment?

(I'm just not sure the Savior would have been to so many places in UT in 33 AD.)

Pres. George Q. Cannon said he saw the Savior in Hawaii, I think it was when he was on his mission in the 1850's. I don't think it was like Jesus came to see a show at the PCC

Oh yeah, sure, it has happened.  Notice that the rumor / myth / legend doesn't say every or only those locations, though.  And the word "at" can cover a lot of territory, like how Jesus was born at Jerusalem.

The sea has aisles?

I have heard it too. Also that Moroni went around dedicating temple sites while delivering the plates to NY.

I will try and find references, but I think this amounts to FPR. Even if some leaders claimed this, I don’t remember if they said they believed because of revelation or something else and it has never been picked up as a church teaching I have heard of outside some seminary teacher or class member bringing it up.

Having said that, I love the idea of little Zion communities around the world established by Christ.  Even if only a very small group percentage wise has had a chance to live that way, what a blessing for them.  So I hope it is true.

If the Church intends you to know something, you'll be told in general conference talks or in church publications.

Uh huh.  And just to be crystal clear please clarify who the Church is, exactly.

Published under the authority of the First Presidency, contained in a church manual, or spoken in general conf (even that is trumped by the official conference reports).  Only these have gone through curriculum review.

That does not include everything published in the Ensign, as review does not include all twelve apostles.

You neglected to mention over 99% of the members of the Church, so again, please tell me exactly who (and/or what) the Church is.

To help you with this endeavor I will tell you this much.  The First Presidency constitutes only 3 persons who are members of the Church, so they are not the Church, entirely, although they are members of it.

A Church manual is not the Church, either, although it is written by some of the members of the Church for the use and benefit of all of the members of the Church.

I hope you are now getting the gist of what the Church is and what it is not.

So does FPR mean First Presidency Review, Faith Promoting Rumor, or Filter Performance Rating?

Yes. ;)

P.S.: And don't forget Fernie Poodle Rescue.

You have a mythical view.

The "church" is a corporation sole.  The First Presidency is the only legal authority for the church.

Before the church was a "Corporation sole" it was a trust run by a "trustee in trust," or Joseph Smith or Brigham Young.  Only they could speak for the church.

Thus, only items cleared by the First Presidency are authorized statements of the Church.

Thus, what a general authority says in general conference is not an authorized statement, but when it is reported in conference reports it is an authorized statement.

Church manuals are authorized by the FP.  Yes, of course, manuals are written by lesser persons, but when it is published and copyrighted by the FP it becomes an authorized statement.

You can tell by looking at the published holder of the copyright or similar statements.  For instance, BH Roberts' History of the Church says the copyright is held by Heber J. Grant, president of the Church.  (He is acting for the FP.)  "Brigham Young Discourses," edited by John Widstoe, says that David O McKay is the copyright holder.  The Journal of Discourses, by contrast, is printed in Salt Lake City but it is published by John Henry Smith, an apostle.

Given the facts that: (1) not all of the Saints will fit in physical Zion at Jackson County MO; and (2) the Scriptures tell us that the day will come that "among the wicked he who will not take up arms against his neighbor must needs flee to Zion for safety" (Doctrine and Covenants 45:68), I certainly hope we'll be successful in establishing "little Zion communities" outside Jackson County in the time leading up to the Second Coming!

🙂We used that as a joke in my old bluegrass band Uncle Lumpy and the Friends of Calvin Coolidge.
