New Security Measures at Conference

Recommended Posts

We had some of these in place when President Nelson visited Seattle. We had to go through metal detectors and all bags, backpacks, purses, etc., were searched. Sad, but wise. I would have expected metal detectors to be used too. How times have changed. :(

https://www.ldschurchnews.com/members/2018-09-28/security-measures-youll-need-to-be-aware-of-before-attending-general-conference-at-the-conference-center-48084

Quote
  • The Conference Center will be closed to the public starting the Monday prior to general conference weekend.
  • North Temple will be temporarily closed between West Temple and Main Street two hours before and immediately after each session, allowing pedestrians to cross the street in cross walks and other designated locations within the restricted area. North Temple will reopen each day about two hours after general conference sessions end. New security barriers will be placed at each intersection to ensure the safety of conferencegoers.
  • Any personal items such as large purses, backpacks, shopping bags, suitcases and food items will no longer be stored on Church property during the conference or any future event. Also, no weapons will be allowed in the building.
  • Only clear plastic water bottles (no metal bottles) along with small handbags and umbrellas will be allowed.
  • People are requested to be in their seats 30 minutes before the start of each event.

Is this a new rule?  Or just a restatement of a rule already in place?

There are policies that have been in place for some years regarding not bringing weapons into Church buildings unless one is a police officer. I don’t know how that could be strictly enforced without personal searches or metal detectors.

Are you aware of any LDS wards around the world where members have brought in guns and then needed rules to tell
them not to bring in those weapons?

If I told you I would have to kill you. ;) (That’s a current joke....don’t read anything into it or misunderstand)

I doubt anyone would open carry in church, but it is possible that people with cw permits could have concealed weapons, but unless it were accidentally revealed, I don’t know how it would be discovered.

There are many institutions other than the LDS Church that have such rules and restrictions. There probably are places, including churches, that don’t have this policy.

Are you familiar with the Cane Creek Massacre? https://sites.google.com/site/tnmormonhistory/events/1884/cane-creek-massacre

I have had a Washington carry permit for decades now. In the past I've occasionally been armed at church, as have some other ward members I have known. Don't know why. Sometimes it just felt appropriate for some indefinable reason. This was before I was aware that there was a policy against it. I'd probably conform to the policy now. Of course where I live now I'm not even allowed to possess a firearm, so it's a moot point.

Sounds like you folks haven't been to the Conference Center in a while.

Metal detectors and bag searches have been going on for years at every major meeting or event in the Conference Center.

Only change this year from prior years is reducing the allowed bag size, disallowing food other than water and not holding bags in storage during the meetings.

I have a good friend who is a service missionary and participates in the searches. They usually find at least one or two concealed handguns in addition to quite a few knives at every general conference during the searches.

My favorite story he told about finding interesting things was when he found a handgun on a lady in a wheelchair at general conference (yes, they search people in wheelchairs).

Most of the offending parties forget they have the weapon and accidentally carry into the meeting.

Does Canada have the violent crime rates the USA does?  Also, does this stuff happen as much up there?  Not sure how accurate this is, from my time working at DI, I did overhear this stuff happens more than you would think...

This is why I tend to shy away from religion and politics IRL and especially on line, when you screw someone bad enough to the point where it can cost them their livelihood, they're going to be very angry.  Add into the mix that US society is very letigious, it's too easy to become homeless and once your on the streets it's very difficult to get off is like adding white gas to an already raging fire.  I'd take a note from Rome, they've had to have security for quite sometime, lots of bad people out there.

Thanks. I have never had the opportunity to attend conference in the Conference Center.

I'd feel better if the organization permitted everyone to carry within the organization's edifices.

I'd feel better if everyone beat their guns into plowshares but I am a bit eccentric.
