Popular Post Calm Posted June 13, 2018 Popular Post Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) Just as an FYI as I don't find it controversial myself, but if anyone does, feel free to comment: https://www.familysearch.org/ask/salesforce/viewArticle?urlname=Recording-data-on-same-sex-relationships-1381815034912&lang=en Quote Recording data on same-sex relationships Information The goal of FamilySearch.org is to capture, store, and provide records and an accurate genealogy that represents past, present, and future families of the world. To support this goal, same-sex relationships, including same-sex parents and same-sex couples, will be provided in FamilySearch Family Tree. Several systems that surround Family Tree, such as tree and record searching, must be significantly redesigned to support same-sex relationships before Family Tree can release this capability. We expect to finish this work by 2019. Following this work, the FamilySearch Family Tree application can then allow same-sex information to be recorded. We appreciate your patience and desire to preserve the world’s genealogy in Family Tree. Edited June 13, 2018 by Calm 5
kllindley Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Wow. I also don't find it offensive or wrong, but I kept looking for some sign that this was another hoax. 1

Ahab Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 I wonder if it will make it more difficult for those who approve ordinance requests. The people listed as the heads of each family won't necessarily qualify as people who can be sealed to each other in their own family, so the ordinance approvers may have to do some more homework.

That would not be a problem since they already allow for multiple spouses of the opposite sex and I doubt they insist on no overlapping of years married for current ones (my ancestors' plural marriages are all there).
Scott Lloyd Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) If the database accurately reflects out-of-wedlock births or common-law relationships, the inclusion of same-sex relationships does not surprise me all that much. FamilySearch purports to be accurate, after all. I don’t believe this in any way legitimizes them in the eyes of God or of the Church. Edited June 13, 2018 by Scott Lloyd 2

Another question that just crossed my mind. Let's say that a former polygamist converts to the Church. And let's say his family lived somewhere like Colorado City for generations who had been FLDS or something. Would he be able to do temple work for his family that are dead and seal people together into polygamist marriages that had been polygamists in a sect like that?

Deceased persons generally have all their spouses sealed to them, unless specific directions are given not to do so.

There appears to be no way to track what faiths people belonged to, so unless names are already flagged, seems unlikely it would make any difference.
JAHS Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 Lots of dead end family trees................unless they adopt.
cinepro Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 It would be cool if the system also automatically removed any ordinance info for people in same-sex marriages. That would save someone the trouble of doing it manually later.

Yes, but they would still be classified as dead end family trees. Even the same sex relationships are dead ends since they will not continue as such without the power of the priesthood binding them in heaven as they were on this Earth. The only good use I can see for that information is to link it to other areas of the unified family tree, connecting those people as children to their birth parents.

JAHS Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 (edited) Here's a Deseret News article on this: LDS Church's FamilySearch database to add same-sex families to Family Tree feature The church immediately acknowledged the legality of same-sex marriage in the United States after the U.S. Supreme Court legalized it in June 2015. Later that year, President Dallin H. Oaks, now of the First Presidency, counseled church members and people of faith to submit to the law once it is sustained by the highest available authority. Since then, the LDS position has remained clear. The faith's leaders repeatedly have taught that all people should be treated with kindness and respect and that Mormons should follow the law while continuing to teach that marriage between a man and a woman is a central part of Mormon doctrine and practice. "Following this work, the FamilySearch Family Tree application can then allow same-sex information to be recorded," the release stated. "We appreciate your patience and desire to preserve the world’s genealogy in Family Tree." Duncan Posted June 13, 2018 Posted June 13, 2018 My Mum's mother's cousin, Hugh, was gay. I'm phoning my Mum now, she said, when she submitted his work to be done, no one was skittish about it. He died in 1978, he never married but his work was completed at the Seattle Temple in April of 1991. Like with same sex marriages, just do their work and God will figure it all out 2
