Why no news conference for the new apostles.

I was wondering why? Do you think because there race would over shadow their call?

Do they usually have news conferences for new apostles?

I didn't remember any for other apostles,  but I'm not a person who really notices that kind of thing. Found one for the 3 new apostles before this.

Maybe because of the ongoing MTC scandal, they're trying to avoid those for any GAs

Possibly to avoid any questions about that (and other negative issues in the news now too).

Also, many felt that the last press conference (announcing the new First Presidency) didn't go so well.

I was wondering the same thing too, but yeah, maybe to avoid bad press they go with no press! I remember the one when Elder Quinton Cook and Pres. Eyring became what they are and it seemed to go okay

The Church would be better off not trying to tightly control the setting, the message, the content, or the format of press conferences. Just let the GAs (whoever and whenever) talk from their hearts and experience. They have a wealth of experience, can answer most questions from their own knowledge, and can say "You know, I really don't know the answer to that" where they don't. Not only is it readily identified as genuine and unscripted, it would go far to dispel the feeling of "message control" that permeates Church public affairs. 

Our best experiences with GAs is when they are unscripted in our local areas. I think that sense and feel at the corporate/administrative level would be huge for the Church. Instead, we have the scripted outings and "Face to Face" events that are brutal. Unfortunately, because the last couple of press conferences didn't go well, I think we are in for a vicious cycle of message control that will get worse before it gets better. The Church is hypersensitive to adverse medial coverage, and the MTC scandal will foster a bunker mentality at the administrative level that will take a while to recover from, I think.

When you desperately need good press, I can't think of anything better than letting Elder Soares and Elder Gong introduce themselves to the world and let the world Church get to know them. That would seem to be a no brainer in terms of putting positive things into the media cycles even while we weather this MTC/Bishop thing.

This seems like a good reason, because the media would only be all over that and whose to say someone might try and take over the meeting by yelling.

From reading this article Posted 3 hours ago , it seems there's a threshold of newsworthiness. In this case, it is the number of vacancies filled at once and reaching the 100th apostle.

If there had been a press conference I could guarantee what at least some of the questions would be:
 

• So... the leadership of the Church is diverse, but not diverse enough. What do you say about that?
• When will the Church finally see women as equal to men?
• When will the Church accept gays as God's children?

And every person that asked one of these questions would feel as though they were the first person to ever bring up such a question.

The last unscripted interview that I am aware of was Holland's BBC interview, and that didn't go so well.  It seems the church has opted only for events where they can control the message.  Even the latest Q and A sessions with the GA's were scripted with all questions vetted a head of time.
