Moses on the mountain

Moses 1:1 says, "The words of God, which he spake unto Moses at a time when Moses was caught 
up into an exceedingly high mountain."

Is this a different occurrence than when Moses went up the mountain and saw a burning bush 
instead of being caught up into it?

Probably a different time since we know Mount Sinai's name.

I wonder why the word ' into ' was used instead of ' on to ' . Maybe he was in a craft and it just seemed like a mountain. Cue the scary music.

Maybe the connection between mount and temple might explain it.

We know where he went up to meet and seek, God and burning bush. A good case could be made that, Just as Abraham, went up to the same same (hills or Mountain ) that he went to, too sacrifice his Son, Isaac, turning into the same place there the "Son of God, was steadied. Such a place would make for a place for  see such wonder, and word ofGod.

Maybe that was Mt Nebo, or some other mountain.  By the way, contrary to popular opinion, Mt Sinai was not in the Sinai Peninsula.  It was located in Midian (the Hijaz).

Prior to Josiah's centralization of the cult at Jerusalem and only at the temple offerings were regularly done in high places. You can see some conflict between Lehi and the deuteronimists in Jerusalem over this. Jeremiah talks about stopping cultic activity at the high places. Despite the revisions of the deuteronomists at the time of Josiah through Zedekiah and into the return from exile elements of these remain in the history of the pre-Kingship era. Moses is one example. Were we to have uncorrupted history from the time of David and earlier I suspect we'd find it much more common. It's worth noting that when Nephi is inducted into the mysteries the spirit brings him to a mountain. Likewise when Jesus takes Peter, James and John and does what most Mormons think is the endowment, he takes them to a mountain.

I personally believe the burning bush was in an area of Horeb frequented by Moses. I don't believe Moses received this vision on this occasion. I believe Moses 1 is showing some of the revelation given to him while in Sinai. He was gone for 40 days. The 10 commandments are just not that long. So Moses 1 is showing that Moses received the story of Adam and Eve that appears in Genesis rather than Caleb or Joshua or some later scribe, and that the text later got edited slightly. My personal belief is that Horeb and Sinai are opposite sides of the same mountain, and that one literally walks up "into" it in a path between the two sides - so he was caught up into this mount. I think it is also a clue that Sinai is not some small mount in the Negev desert, but is one of the tallest mountains. This agrees with Josephus who says Sinai is the tallest mountain in the land.
