Isn't this kind of like writing an article called "Taco salesman talking to person who hasn't eaten all day can smell blood"? Sure, the person who hasn't eaten might not like tacos, might be a vegetarian, or might have some other reason that they don't want the tacos, but regardless of all of that, it's pretty normal--when you have something that someone else doesn't have and which seems like could fill a need--to offer the person access to what you think they are lacking. 4

We each can spin things and cast them in the worst light possible. What need does it satisfy in you to do this repeatedly? Does it help to seek out the worst interpretation of events in your life or the lives of other members of the Church? I don't think Jesus smelled blood, but I do believe he saw where he could do great good and caused the blind man to see. We share the gospel with those in need; few things sharpen the spiritual eyes of humans than events that humble us and cause us to look up. I always felt I helped people answer some of the great questions of life. I guess you can say that I smelled blood, but that is your perception and has nothing to do with reality. 1

My general thoughts were more along the lines of "dear lord help me!"..."no, really, what the crap am I doing?? We're only 22!" Helps you understand how others might see you and definitely makes me giggle. 2

Check out some good ol' Catholic satire! Wow- brought back memories. But in the early 50's, where I went to church, no one worried about germs. And at least 5 smacks was the expectation. But I can tell you the tears flowed! Those sweet Polish babushkas were as devout as the widow with her mite. It made quite an impression on me as a five or six year old. I cried too. I have always sought to provide secular or non-Mormon means for people to solve their problems (if available), not wanting to take advantage of someone's misfortune.

The gospel is a remedy for the ills people face. Sharing the gospel with someone in pain is not taking advantage, it is helping them. I keep hearing that it is taking advantage somehow from antis but I notice that when someone in the church suffers a tragedy that shakes their faith suddenly this vaunted fairness principle about not targeting people gets thrown out. It is almost as if they only want to silence us and are not actually interested in fairness.......

I have just gone to extremes in order not to take advantage of any golden opportunity. I always imagine (perhaps incorrectly) that they will find their way to the Gospel -- if it is God's will. Probably a major defect in my character.
