Scott Lloyd Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 This is remarkable news if true. Few high-profile figures were harsher in their criticism of Trump during the campaign than Romney. For that reason, if it happens, it might assuage some fears about what Trump will do as president. It would be interesting to have another Mormon in a cabinet post. Previous ones I can think of are Ezra Taft Benson, George Romney (Mitt's father), David M. Kennedy and, most recently, Micheal O. Leavitt. Are there any that I'm leaving out?

Not only that, check out two of the names on President-Elect Trump's list for the Supreme Court vacancy (emphases added): Quote President-elect Donald Trump is “committed” to only nominating a Supreme Court justice from his previously disclosed list of potential additions to the high court, his campaign manager said Wednesday. As the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Trump released a list of 11 potential nominees in May. He expanded his potential selection pool in September with 10 additional names. “You’ve seen the list of 21. The list has not changed,” Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told reporters Wednesday. “President-elect Trump has committed to choosing his Supreme Court justices, particularly the vacancy created by the untimely death of Justice Scalia. He’s committed to choosing from that list of 21.” ... The names on Trump's list are: 1. Keith Blackwell 2. Charles Canady 3. Steven Colloton 4. Allison Eid 5. Neil Gorsuch 6. Raymond Gruender 7. Thomas Hardiman 8. Raymond Kethledge 9. Joan Larsen10. Mike Lee 11. Thomas Lee 12. Edward Mansfield 13. Federico Moreno 14. William Pryor 15. Margaret A. Ryan 16. Amul Thapar 17. Timothy Tymkovich 18. David Stras 19. Diane Sykes 20. Don Willett 21. Robert Young FYI, Mike Lee is a U.S. Senator for Utah, and his brother, Thomas, is on the Utah Supreme Court. Their father was Rex Lee, the founding dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and a very successful Solicitor General for the United States. Thanks, -Smac Edited November 17, 2016 by smac97 2
Boanerges Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I think Romney would make a better Secretary of State than the other leading candidates. Politics can be like this. The Clintons and Trumps are actually friends, and while there is no doubt some repair is needed to the friendship it's not entirely out of the question.

If he excepts the position, he will be seen as a hypocrite, going against everything that he believes in or just having done his opposition for political reasons. If he says no it will be seen as putting his hatred of Trump before love of country. It'll be interesting to see how it shakes out. Miss seeing you around and singing with you this season!
Jeanne Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I heard this on the news this afternoon. Still trying to pick the bottom of my mouth off the floor. If this is true..one would have to admit that Trump is kind of smart like a fox. I can't believe this will happen...kind of hoping Rudy gets it.

Then again maybe it's for a position of Health and Human Services Secretary like Leavitt was, since one of Trumps promises is to get rid of Obamacare. That would put the maker of the Massachusetts law that proceeded Obamacare in a position to either fix it or become the fall guy for it, either way I think you're right Trump is being smart like a fox. 1

Yes, Sevenbak, I miss your voice in the choir with us. I hope you're doing well in your new job. A colleague of mine just said he would be very surprised if Romney ends up getting tabbed for the spot, given Trump's "viciousness." I replied that Trump's MO is doing weird things, and this seems just the sort of weird thing he would do. As for the precariousness of Romney's position, I would expect (and hope) that, as a Latter-day Saint, he is apt to forgive, and if Trump is inclined to change in some respects, Romney might want to come on board. Hard to say. Just had a thought: Do you think the Tabernacle Choir will be invited to perform at the inauguration, as they have done at past inaugurals for some Republican (and one Democratic) presidents?

I don't see it that way at all. This would be an example of Mitt putting the good of the country before his own animosity of Trump. It would be a smart move for Trump to co-opt one of his harshest critics and Mitt is a stand up guy with a good temperament. Having Romney as SoS would assuage some of my fears. 9
Boanerges Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Good question about the choir. I'm going to go with no, they will not be invited but not because of any perceived dislike on the part of Trump. They're just not always invited. OTOH, it has been awhile so it's possible.

True, but even more recently Obama had Clinton in his cabinet despite a bitter primary. So it can happen but it would show a level of maturity I doubt Trump possesses. JLHPROF Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Personally I don't think Romney is suited for Secretary of State. Other depts. sure, but I think there are more qualified ambassadors to the world to choose from. Romney should do Treasury or Interior or something. 1

If we were to go back a bit further, Eisenhower appointed Ezra Taft Benson as secretary of agriculture after Benson supported Eisenhower's opponent in the Republican primary. In fact, Benson, in his reluctance to accept the post, told Eisenhower that. As for Trump's maturity level, if he's not mature enough to do it, he might be Machiavellian enough if he thought it would score him some political advantage, power or influence. 1

Although I am not a great Romney fan, I do have to agree with you here. Our country after this election is in a turmoil and the first thing that needs to be done is to unite the Republican party first and maybe calm some nerves...the puppies are not helping with calming the young university students..If they could somehow get any reassurance from Romney..I would be all for it even if he is not of their party/choice.

Duncan Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 I don't know if Trump is more interested in serving the country or his ego but didn't Romney turn around the 2002 Utah Olympics thing and get it back to where it needed to be? So if that's the case then maybe he can navigate the increasingly murky waters of the SS Donald Trump, hasn't he had like 6 scandals in what like 9 days now?
VideoGameJunkie Posted November 18, 2016 Posted November 18, 2016 I hope Romney is offered the position and accepts it. It would be great for the country. And I'd love for Mike Lee to be picked for the Supreme Court.
