1st and 2nd Quorums-thing of the past?

I noticed Pres. Uchtdorf didn't sustain the new GA's into any particular quorums, are they doing away with the 1st and 2nd Quorums of the 70's and just having a schmenge of brethren now. now? Yes, I know Area Seventies aren't not General Authorities and they serve in the 3-8th quorums

Good question. I picked up on that also. As I understand it, members of the First Quorum are lifetime members (until being declared emeritus at age 70) and members of the Second Quorum serve for a limited amount of time (about 5 years). Has that changed? Or did the leadership choose not to make a distinction in this case? I did look at the GA page on LDS.org and there is no distinction made between First or Second Quorum, they're listed together as General Authority Seventies - but previous versions did make a distinction.

(We're only talking GAs, here, First and Second Quorums. Area Authority Seventy serve for a limited time as well and only in their respective areas, and they have never made a point of saying which quorum they serve in.)

I noticed that as well. I tried looking it up but found noting so I must use a educational guess, I think they are no longer called for time but the 1st and 2nd quorum are now one and the same. And it makes it easy to not have to call new guys every five years.

My question wasn't a testimony issue.

I've wondered about this, too. Scott Lloyd, do you have any insights on this?

To answer the question in the OP, no, the First and Second Quourms of the Seventy have not been discontinued.

In recent days, the Church leadership has begun referring to members of those two quorums as General Authority Seventies to distinguish them from members of the Third through the Eighth Quorums of the Seventy, who are known as Area Seventies.

Unless things have changed without my awareness, members of the first two quorums (General Authority Seventies) serve full time, while members of the other quorums (Area Seventies) serve part time in their callings while working full time at their occupations.

If the separate quorums still exist (and I think they still do), why don't they identify for the lay members which quorum they're in?

So the lay members do not know which Quorum directs our Danite operatives.

You think I'm joking?

How could I be doing that when I didn't put anything in "scare quotes" (cinepro's quirky rule for writing something in jest)?

Well, you'll have to take that up with cinepro.  Your comment made me laugh, that's all I was saying....

Yeah, I too think cinepro made that rule up out of whole cloth.

There really are no more Danites.

Now vampires are another thing entirely.

If you want my conjecture, I'll give it to you.

Well, I didn't say that, so I'm not sure why you used the word "too"....that's between the two of you.

It appears you are saying there are no longer numbered quorums and then cite the third through 8 th quorum

you'll also notice that I said that they seem to have done away with the 1st and 2nd quorums of the 70 while maintaining the 3-8th and why is that? hmmmmmmmmmm?

I'm teasing you for amusement, ALarson. It's consistent with that sense of humor you have so newly recognized in me.

I'll buy your first or second or whatever beer

As a reformed drunk, I am glad that wasn't addressed to me.  Buying me a beer would not be much of a distinction.
