Over the years, I have heard a huge variety of advice from reputable sources making claims of best approaches based on studies...from being completely passive to complete resistance even in the face of guns, etc.  I cannot watch the video, so don't know where on the spectrum it actually falls.

Yes the producer does not say exactly using the "force" but if you watch the video, it might as well be.  Though the use of using the purse did actually work in this video.  I love this one

Now you're being ridiculous. A woman is not safer merely because she can be armed. It takes a special kind of psyche to, not only be armed, but to access the weapon and then use it. Studies have shown that "ordinary" people, the everyday citizen, without violent or psychotic tendencies, when stressed into a threatening situation, become almost catatonic, unable to react, even in their own defense. A woman (or man) with a gun in purse or pocket doesn't react in time.

Have you ever had to use a weapon in defense? Do you hunt? If you hunt, you know that special moment when you have to "finish off an animal". I remember looking into the eyes of a wounded moose. It was dying, that much I knew, but I had to put it out of its misery. It turned its head and looked at me. Those big, watering eyes made it very hard for me to shoot. 

I can only imagine if I had to face another human, no matter the situation of danger. I doubt I would be able to shoot. In fact, I'm sure I wouldn't be able to.

I don't disagree with it and nothing I mentioned is in opposition to it. Btw, I do freely admit that the details I posted are correct.  Glad to see you admit it.

I enjoyed the current talk.  It outlined our personal duty and I noted the strong stressing of the fact that this was not a governmental duty nor was it suggested that anyone be forced into helping or accepting certain policies, many of which supported by those who are intolerant of my statements happen to be against the Church's stand ala the Utah Compact.

As we learned in San Bernardino though, profiling doesn't work, and who knows if vetting would have helped. The problem becomes radicalized locals.

i say this more as a general response than to you, particularly:

i am acutely aware of the american socio-conservative cross section of Mormons.  i have no desire to go in circles with those arguments.  suffice it to say that i remain very 'soft' on immigration.  a bit left of center.

i was glad that Elder Kearon made it a human story.  and that he encouraged us to get informed as to the goings-on in those parts of the world.  putting a human face on the problem and getting educated is the surest path to peace.  i don't want to take his remarks as any kind of tacit endorsement or thinly veiled rejection of American policy on immigration.  that's absurd on its face, anyway, as the man is British.
