He couldn't possibly be verifying identities.  The church doesn't give out membership rolls

He could verify that they are who they say they are.

Just a guess...but they probably use their membership #'s

If you read the information on his website, he does ask for their membership # if they know it....and I have to believe most temple recommend holders at least have access to this.  Other members most likely don't have access to their membership # unless they contact their Bishop.

There is a space to enter Membership number on the form but he says he doesn't need it.

I help people set up access to ward info on LDS.com, like directories of members (which are ward specific- access to your ward only unless you are in leadership) and calendars of activities, and free access to genealogy sites which charge others.

Unless you have a temple recommend in your pocket- NOBODY knows their membership number.  You have to usually ask the ward clerk

These folks are not active, nor do they have recommends, nor do they probably even know their ward clerk nor could care less about going through all that to get their records removed.

Not gonna happen that way

6500 is a good number but I would not call it a mass.  It represents about one weeks worth of those being baptized into the Church.

Still though that's 6,500 souls that are going to miss out on the Celestial Kingdom.

And we know that the only people resigning are doing so through that website. All is well!

I doubt that a "fake" resignation would go through and be successful.

Oh, I don't know. I've already submitted my bishop's name and that of a former U.S. Senator.

Only time will tell!  🙋

It doesn't mean that at all.

I think probably most of them are deluded like some we see here, and will have a better chance on the other side of seeing the truth.  Others maybe not so much.  I am not the one to judge anyway

The church story is not easy to swallow, I think for a reason.  But that is my opinion

Are there really that many people baptized every week?  Is that counting the child baptisms (8 year olds)?

If that is new member baptisms, that's awesome!

All is well for you if you are faithful.  Our exaltation is not dependent on how many people join or leave the church.  If 100,000 leave the church this year all it means is that there will be a few less in the celestial kingdom but with the countless billions there from this world and other worlds, there still will be more than enough for us to meet and hang out with.  The people who resign think they are hurting the Church by leaving.  Not really the case.  All they are doing is blowing themselves up.  Eternities of time they waited in the pre-mortal existence to get to this point and then they throw it all down the drain but it is their choice.

Nothing to see here folks move along....these were all those who wanted to sin, the offended, the lazy, gays, queers, non-tithe payers, non-temple attending shellac's, the so called intellectuals and feminists... We really didn't lose anything of value...in fact we're better off without them to spew their micro minded lies and distortions of the truth...I say they've weighed us down and distorted our home teaching numbers for far too long. I say don't let the door hit your arse on the way out...good riddance

Agreed.

I, ___________________, hereby authorize and assign Mark A. Naugle as my attorney and agent, to speak and act on my behalf in all matters concerning my relationship with and resignation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [sic]. Any contact, whether verbal, written, electronic, or via representatives of the Church must be directed to Mark A. Naugle, Attorney at Law.

To be terribly pedantic, then ("Noooooo!  Lawyers [and those who "play" lawyers here at Mormon Dialogue and Discussion]  are never pedantic!") there is a difference between "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints [sic]" and "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."  If he wants to superintend resignations from the former, I'm perfectly OK with that, since such resignations would have no force and effect on membership status in the latter. ;)

...  This policy [for resigning one's membership] includes the bishop trying to talk you out of your decision ...

Your experience was your experience, and I wasn't there; perhaps your bishop did try to talk you out of resigning.  That said, ensuring that one understands the consequences of his decision and is committed to it =/= "The bishop trying to talk you out of your decision."

It's amazing to me that all those here who are ordinarily skeptics suddenly are taking this at face value as the "truth".

Some guy with some site makes a claim that on its face makes little sense and is impossible to prove, and suddenly the church is falling apart.

I'll tell you a better tall tale if you are ready to bite on THAT one...

See there were these gold plates, brought by an angel, and.......

I believe this guy was involved in the resignation that occurred a few months about where about 1700 put in their letters.  I have no doubts that the number is real.  But does the number really mean anything. I know from the press releases that many of those in that event of 1700 members had not been to church for years.  If someone does not go to Costco in years and they decide to formally take themselves off the membership rolls of Costco, does Costco really care?

People will have the same passions and feelings in the next life and it's much harder to repent and change in the spirit world than it is to do in our mortal lives.

That would be true if all of them were active, faithful members.  I would predict that the bulk of them did not fall into that category.

I was just pointing out that some were acting like the alleged resignations from his site were the only resignations happening.

Who here (on this thread) has said this (that "the church is falling apart") if these numbers are accurate?

Uh, the OP?

Like "mass apostasy"?

So you believe that smac97 stated that these numbers are accurate and mean that "the church is falling apart"?

I don't think that's what smac97 was saying in his OP.  Even if he believed these resignations meant there was a mass apostasy, he never stated that "the church was falling apart".  Those are YOUR words.

And, from what I've read here on this thread, no one else has stated that.

Oh gosh

Have you heard of "sarcasm" or "hyperbole"?  And you want to start a war over an intentional exaggeration?

Remain Calm.

I'm just correcting your exaggeration.  I'm as calm as can be :)

smac97 was questioning the accuracy of this report in his OP, and you refer to it as your only evidence that people are saying the church is falling apart?  That's a misrepresentation and I'm pointing that out.  Nothing more.
