As we have been discussing president nelsons address lately I happened to go to read it and I saw that sister nelsons address was online as well. Excellent talk but I was curious about one paragraph:

Quote

So, now a question as I conclude: What if you learned that the Savior had already returned to this earth—that He, as part of His Second Coming, had already met with some of His true followers in several marvelous, large gatherings13—gatherings about which the world, including CNN and the blogosphere, knew nothing. If you found out that the Savior was already on the earth, what would you desperately want to do today, and what would you be willing and ready to do tomorrow?

So what is this about?

I've heard it observed recently that the world is wicked enough for the Second Coming, but there aren't quite enough faithful saints. Is that a new "saying" going around, or is it an old one and I just haven't heard it, or was it unique to the setting I heard it in?

I've always liked President Kimball's statement, "When Satan is bound in a single home—when Satan is bound in a single life—the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life" (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, ed. Edward L. Kimball [1982], 172).

We now come to the least known and least understood thing connected with the Second Coming. It might well be termed the best-kept secret set forth in the revealed word. It is something about which the world knows nothing; it is a doctrine that has scarcely dawned on most of the Latter-day Saints themselves; and yet it is set forth in holy writ and in the teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith with substantially the same clarity as any of the doctrines of the kingdom. It behooves us to make a needed brief commentary about it.

Before the Lord Jesus descends openly and publicly in the clouds of glory, attended by all the hosts of heaven; before the great and dreadful day of the Lord sends terror and destruction from one end of the earth to the other; before he stands on Mount Zion, or sets his feet on Olivet, or utters his voice from an American Zion or a Jewish Jerusalem; before all flesh shall see him together; before any of his appearances, which taken together comprise the second coming of the Son of God-before all these, there is to be a secret appearance to selected members of his Church. He will come in private to his prophet and to the apostles then living. Those who have held keys and powers and authorities in all ages from Adam to the present will also be present. And further, all the faithful members of the Church then living and all the faithful saints of all the ages past will be present. It will be the greatest congregation of faithful saints ever assembled on planet earth. It will be a sacrament meeting. It will be a day of judgment for the faithful of all the ages. And it will take place in Daviess County, Missouri, at a place called Adam-ondi-Ahman. (The Millennial Messiah, Bruce R McConkie)

I doubt she is hinting of secret meetings on Adam-ondi-Ahman though, to be honest, I hope she is.

Always check the footnotes...which Bobbieaware has posted, I believe.

Except her version did alter it, I assume to inspire those present to prepare themselves for the future reality where, according to the reference, all living faithful Saints will be present at one meeting.

Now I don't personally know if this is a correct interpretation given we have been taught that there will be faithful Saints gathered in all over the world and this reference appears to assume they will all be in one place.  Plus I don't remember the requirement of it being secret.

Someone should post the scriptural references and other commentary about it.

I am not going to pretend I have an answer, but it might just be a hypothetical exercise for us to imagine how such a thought might change our lives.

I think the paragraph immediately before the quote gives some evidence that that is what is happening?  I don't know

Quote

My dear brothers and sisters, whom I love, the reality is that someday you and I will each have an individual, face-to-face interview with the Savior Himself. When this eventuality becomes real to us, we will be willing to do whatever it takes to be prepared!

So it seems to me, she is describing two thought experiments here, the first to imagine what it will be like to be interviewed by the savior, and the other to imagine what it would be like to know that the second coming was imminent

"What if you learned... what would you desperately want to do today, and what would you be willing and ready to do tomorrow?"

The question might be how would those ideas change your life.

I'm sure she was speaking of Adam ondi ahman but is she implying that meetings have already started? Will that happen before the far west temple is built?

I know the Far West temple will be built but I have seen no information suggesting it has to be built before the Second Coming.

For what it's worth, here's something from BYU professor Robert Millet who then goes on to quote Orson Pratt:

There may be some wisdom in speaking of the second comings of the Lord Jesus Christ, three of which are preliminary appearances, or comings, to select groups, and one of which is to the whole world. The Lord will make a preliminary appearance to His temple in Independence, Jackson County, Missouri. This seems to be a private appearance to those holding the keys of power in the earthly kingdom. Elder Orson Pratt, in speaking of this appearance, said: “All of them who are pure in heart will behold the face of the Lord and that too before he comes in his glory in the clouds of heaven, for he will suddenly come to his Temple, and he will purify the sons of Moses and of Aaron, until they shall be prepared to offer in that Temple an offering that shall be acceptable in the sight of the Lord. In doing this, he will purify not only the minds of the Priesthood in that Temple, but he will purify their bodies until they shall be quickened, renewed and strengthened, and they will be partially changed, not to immortality, but changed in part that they can be filled with the power of God, and they can stand in the presence of Jesus, and behold his face in the midst of that Temple.”[4] Charles W. Penrose observed that the Saints “will come to the Temple prepared for him, and his faithful people will behold his face, hear his voice, and gaze upon his glory. From his own lips they will receive further instructions for the development and beautifying of Zion and for the extension and sure stability of his Kingdom.”[5]

Highly unlikely she is implying the meetings have already started since what she is referencing states one meeting where all faithful Saints will be present.****  If she was implying the meeting has already occurred, she would be essentially saying the whole audience she is addressing is unfaithful, which from my POV is the opposite of what she is saying.

Thought experiment only, the equivalent of "what would you feel if Jesus were to come tomorrow?".

It's ok with me if Christ chooses to meet with the leaders of the Church anytime He wants to. I appreciate bobbieaware posting that about Adam-Ondi Ahman. I knew about it but my reference is missing. I believe it was in the History of the Church set, 9 volumes I think. I hope I can get my sailboat that far up the river.

..then will appear one grand sign of the Son of Man in heaven. But what will the world do? They will say it is a planet, a comet, etc. But the Son of man will come as the sign of the coming of the Son of Man, which will be as the light of the morning cometh out of the east” (Joseph Smith, Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, 286–87).

Exactly what the stupids in the World are being prepared to think:

Jesus is going to ride an asteroid down to earth and crash it into the planet? That is both terrifying and awesome.

I have seen her speak to this theme before.

She believes that desperation can be a powerful motivator, and that we ought to pursue certain endeavors with the same fervency and and zeal that we would employ if we were being driven by desperation.

She seems to be saying here that if we learned the Savior had already returned to earth, we would be probably be pursuing righteousness with a lot greater intent than we are today. So why not employ that level of intent here and now without being driven to it?

That's the meaning I draw from it, anyway. Your mileage may vary.

You mean something like Nicholas Cage in "Ghost Rider"?
