Board Status Levels

Hi All,

I've noticed several "groups" or statuses that board members can have: limited, member, banned, contributor. I think banned and member are pretty clear to me, but how does one get on limited or contributor status and what are the privileges and/or penalties associated with these statuses?

If I understand correctly, you automatically get contributor once you've been around for a while and rack up a certain amount of posts. I don't think there are any privileges that come with the designation, except maybe more trust or benefit of the doubt than newbies get.

Limited is for people who the mods believe have run amok a bit but not done something worthy of being banned.

They are limited in the number of times they can post each day, and I think they sometimes have limits on starting threads too.

To be limited , one must have broken some rule or annoyed the mods by over-posting personal details or some such.

To become a contributor requires about 3500 posts. Even contributors can become limited I think.

Analytics has about 3100 posts and is a contributor. I've got more and am not. No fair!

Don't worry, I've got over 3k and have been a member on this board for over a decade. Analytics probably bribes a mod regularly or something :P

I honestly assumed it was about number of posts....if it's not, then I have no clue the difference between a member and a contributor nor that it makes any difference.

I remember now....I think. We used to have a more one on one or invited posters only forum. You had to get special permission to do that, which then got you tagged as contributor.

I don't know if they've added anyone since then or not.

The ability to lock one's own threads when they go off course is the only one I've noticed.

I became a contributor at 3500.

I got limited for calling The Nehor names.  I did apologize though and it didn't help.

It is nearly impossible to get taken off of limited.  I think I've only seen it once.

But the MODs have their reasons.

I'm on limited and can only make 12 posts a day and can't start any threads. It sucks.

It's curious to note that for a discussion board based on the Restored Gospel that there seems to be no forgiveness for those placed on limited status. You'd think that if it's Church members who are running the board that they'd give participants second chances. There should also be times of general amnesty to see if those placed on limited have learned how to overcome the habits that got them put on limited in the first place. Anyway, that's the way I'd run the board if given the chance.

How do you know they haven't prior to putting people on Limited?

This board is not 'based on the Gospel', that doesn't really make sense. Where did you get that idea?

Why wouldn't one expect believing members of the LDS Church to apply the principles of the Gospel to a discussion board focused on the teachings of the Church. After all, it was the Lord Himself who in D&C 29 said, "Wherefore, verily I say unto you that all things unto me are spiritual." And it is the same Lord who also said "the merciful shall obtain mercy." But when you say the board is not based on the Gospel, and that thinking it should be based on the Gospel doesn't make any sense, I must admit that explains a lot.

So "limited" only means you can't start threads and must "limit" yourself to twelve posts a day? Being "limited" would not affect this "contributor" in the slightest. Even if homosexuality ever recedes in interest, I will never put together twelve posts in a day. Maybe on a Saturday when there is something of interest? Maybe five or six posts substantive will take up virtually a whole day. Three more about Arlo Guthrie or Bobby Darin or Jackie Gleason (Minnesota Fats) or Larry Bird or Cervantes or water or thunder or clay or hygiene or Mt. Vesuvius? Still only nine. That has probably happened, albeit seldom. More often, such as now, it is difficult to make one post...and this one was a throwaway.

And see! This is bull poop because I love your posts and am of a highly biased opinion that you and Misererenobis don't post enough. Perhaps you should consider being charitable by making me happy and post more, Rory.

You didn't say that the board was structured in a way to apply the principles of the Gospel, but you said based on the Gospel itself.  It still doesn't make sense to me written in that way.  It would be like saying my house is based on the Gospel...what does the Gospel have to do with the construction of a house?

I always find it interesting when posters come here and post for free on a message board that is paid for by the moderators and yet the posters find it no problem at all to complain about how the board is run.  It is like a guest coming to someone's home and then complaining at the table that the dinner was cold and there wasn't any dessert and they didn't like how the dining room was decorated.

As a primary moderator (but not owner) at one time of another board that did give posters second chances (and quite a few more), I am of the opinion that such an endeavour is not sustainable in the long run and as evidence I present the death of that board which once had conversations that rivaled the best of what has happened here.  That board (ZLMB) in many ways was the forerunner of this one.  I like to think my pain and suffering during that time has in part helped the moderators here avoid a significant amount because they learned from my experience.

It's not so much that I would be complaining about the mods, it's just I was never told why I was put on limited status and there's no hope to get off limited status. It made me question what I even did with no answers.

Well,  I as a ZLMB moderator would spent endless hours telling posters who asked what they did wrong, trying to work with them to alter their behaviour to become more in line with board rules.  I don't remember any significant number of those I talked to actually changing their behaviour.  Those that did changed it imo because of what other posters said, not me as moderator.

If I remember rightly (and I apologize if I am mistaken) I think it was for starting repetitive threads to ask the same questions over again.

But my memory isn't always reliable on things like this.  (I do remember another person who was put on limited around the same time for starting personal threads all the time, but they are no longer on the board).

That was my impression as well (starting too many threads about more or less the same things) and I believe I have said so to VGJ before.
