JLHPROF Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 As VGJ requested - Also, why is the Book of Mormon considered the single most important book of scripture, more than the Bible, and Doctrine and Covenants, where it's the Bible that talks about the beginning and Jesus life, and D&C talks about everything relevant to us today about how our church is run and temple marriage and modern revelation. What is it about the Book of Mormon that makes the apostles say read this 1 book it's super important. Our sacrament meeting spent the last 2 months with talks about nothing but the Book of Mormon and it's importance. So what actually about it is so important? The many wars? Or just the fact that we got it from golden plates which were written down on and passed down on then buried and taken back by the Angel Moroni never to be seen again. I'm just asking what makes the Book of Mormon number 1. We're always told by prophets and GAs to read through the Book of Mormon. So many times they say this. We're never told to read through Doctrine and Covenants. Can someone else start a thread about the importance of the Book of Mormon. And then I can start my convo. I'm on limited so I can't start threads. It's an interesting question - Joseph Smith said that we would get closer to God by abiding by its precepts than any other book yet virtually none of the 19th century prophets quoted from it very often in their discourses and teachings. Joseph never really referred to Nephi, Mosiah, Alma, etc, or virtually never, in any of his discourses, but he frequently referenced the Bible.Did he not think it necessary to his teachings? 1
CV75 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 As VGJ requested - It's an interesting question - Joseph Smith said that we would get closer to God by abiding by its precepts than any other book yet virtually none of the 19th century prophets quoted from it very often in their discourses and teachings. Joseph never really referred to Nephi, Mosiah, Alma, etc, or virtually never, in any of his discourses, but he frequently referenced the Bible.Did he not think it necessary to his teachings?I think perhaps Joseph was inviting or expecting people to read, study, ponder and prayer about it themselves, get a witness of it (and by extension a witness of the Restoration and the Church), and abide by its precepts. Once you have a copy of the book, the rest is up to you with what to do with it. Joseph had so many other sources to draw from and teach in rolling out the last dispensation. The precepts of the Book of Mormon get us closer to God in our imperfection, and the precepts that come by way of the revelations of the living prophets, and the receiving the blessings from their exercise of the keys get us to a higher level and closer to realizing actual perfection. There are also many talks about the Book of Mormon being the keystone of our religion and the D&C the capstone, for various reasons.
JAHS Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 Of course the main answer is because it is a second witness for Jesus Christ and His gospel. On my mission we used to use the comparison about an alien coming down to earth with a record of his people, and the record contained a visitation of Jesus Christ and His gospel, which matched closely to what is found in our Bible. It would be a pretty good proof that Jesus actually existed and that His gospel was important for everyone on the earth and even the entire universe.
Duncan Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 the Bible tells what happened and the Book of Mormon tells why it happened. 1
Kenngo1969 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 (edited) The Book of Mormon is the best evidence we have that God spoke to (and through) the Prophet of the Restoration. Though other people involved in the Restoration reported contact with beings from beyond the veil, nobody else was in the Grove with Joseph. Nobody else saw Moroni deliver the message (four times!) to Joseph. Heck, Elder Holland says it better than I can. (Elder Holland says a lot of things better than I can! https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2009/10/safety-for-the-soul?lang=eng.) Besides, when Satan goes to bed at night, he checks under his bed for Elder Holland! Edited September 20, 2015 by Kenngo1969
filovirus Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 If you really want to see how "plain" the BOM teaches various principles of the Gospel as compared to the bible read this article: https://rsc.byu.edu/archived/book-mormon-keystone-scripture/4-comparison-book-mormon-bible-and-traditional-teachingsIf you have an hour of free time to listen to a speech given at BYU, this clarifies a ton on the issue: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0dUPWlyS384Two of my favorite sources comparing the BOM to the bible.

Mosiah 15;1-4 I and my Father are one. John 10:30 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 1 Timothy 2:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Ephesians 4:5-6
VideoGameJunkie Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 I'm reading through the Book of Mormon but I personally get more out of reading Doctrine and Covenants. Maybe it's just me though.
Avatar4321 Posted September 20, 2015 Posted September 20, 2015 It was reading the D&C that gave me my testimony. But as I've read the Book of Mormon I am more and more impressed by how amazing it is. It's truly a miracle the book exists. And it teaches so plainly that following it makes it very clear in the Doctrine of Christ
rpn Posted September 21, 2015 Posted September 21, 2015 It was compiled by inspiration after Mormon was given a vision of the last days, meaning that it was tailor made as what is important in all of the scriptural writings of the western hemisphere to address our current needs.
piccione Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 Those interested in reading the book involving the Translation of the Book of Mormon Caractors Document that I have just completed, I have set up a website where it can be accessed.www.bookofmormoncaractorstranslation.com I will be adding the Table of Contents and Index sometime next week, but the book is complete. If you have any comments or suggestions I would appreciate any feedback. As you read the analysis, you will see the Mesoamerican elements in the document. The electronic version of the book is free, when published the hard copy will be available at cost. Also on that website is a link for free access to a book I published earlier this year entitled The Geology of the Book of Mormon which has been discussed in this chain. The Caractors document actually has information that helps identify the location of the Book of Mormon, and the Geology book does the same.
