When Did Missionaries Get Name Tags?

Does anyone know when missionaries got name tags? It was in the 1970's at some point

I think it was earlier than that: I went on my mission in the mid-70's, and we had name tags. My recollection is that missionaries serving in Oklahoma (where I grew up) had them for several years before I left on my mission too. My guess is that name tags became standard in the 60's.

where did you serve? My Mom got baptized in 1967 here in Canada and she didn't recall them having them, maybe it was after that?

From 1971-73 in south Texas, we had our own name tags made at the local office-supply store. I went through a bunch of the cheap things in two years, so it wasn't a big deal to chuck the last one when my mission ended. Much different than today, where the official tags issued by the Church become imbued with an incredible amount of symbolic significance to those who wear them. When my sons' missions were done and the Stake President released them and asked them to remove their tags, they both broke down and wept.

I got mine when I went into the MTC, then I got another one when I arrived in the California San Diego Mission.

They were not issued in my mission and we were told not to wear them because too many people found them intimidating.

I served in the Germany Hamburg Mission. Perhaps it was mission-specific rather than worldwide?

I was issued a name tag as a new state side missionary in 1974.

I would guess as soon as the mass production was no longer cost prohibitive, as in having the machine to do it in house, or a place nearby who could do so...including the many languages for various forgien missions.

In my mission from 1972-74 in the Germany Duesseldorf Mission (then known as Central German Mission), we were not issued name tags, nor were we encouraged to create our own. I think this was because Germany is/was so class-conscious that name tags looked too "official".

When were you in the Language Training Mission? I was there around March - May 1972.

Pretty safe bet that even if it was the same standardized name tag by the 1970's, various missions issued tags much earlier.   I saw them on missionaries during the late 60's.

I was on my mission from October 1968 to 1970 and we had formal name tags we wore on our coat pocket.  This was the Northern States - Illinois and Wisconsin mostly.
