AndyDnom Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I'd like to hear from folks here, especially those who are believing members. ( I hate the term TBM, as im sure most do, as its reductive and over simple.) I have a sincere question, I hope you will take it as such. I f you had three daughters, let's say they are 13, 15, and 17. And Joseph Smith was alive today. Would you let him teach their early morning seminary class? if it was just him and the girls alone in the room every morning? Would you let him do bishop interviews with them behind a closed door? Would you let him drive them to a temple trip, or on a field trip? Now that I have daughters, I had to ask myself this question, and I would like to hear your thoughts.

I'd let him marry them...if they wanted to. Agency first of course. "Sincerely", quit implying sin that doesn't exist. Edited December 21, 2014 by JLHPROF 4

Others may disagree, but I don't see any reason to believe that Joseph Smith wouldn't conform to 21st-century norms and mores. (Before you argue, in rebuttal, that he did not conform to 19th-century norms and mores, I would remind you that plural marriage wasn't illegal at the time he began the practice, and I suspect that much of the animus that developed later toward that practice was motivated less by purported concerns regarding its morality than it was motivated by anti-Mormon sentiment.) While attitudes regarding plural marriage ran the gamut among those who participated in it, it was as difficult for many of those who participated in it to give it up as it was for them to begin practicing it. 5
Popular Post longview Posted December 21, 2014 Popular Post Posted December 21, 2014 Joseph Smith was a real people person. He spent a great amount of playing with children (with nothing untoward ever spoken of). He would be an awesome teacher. His early morning popularity would have necessitated the use of an auditorium to handle overflow crowds. 7
VideoGameJunkie Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 I would love for my daughters to be taught by the prophet. That would be an amazing learning experience! 1
Kemara Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Why did you feel the need to ask yourself this question? 3

Of course I would, because if there were ever the possibility of a sealing on the horizon, history shows he would talk to me and my wife about it first. 1
Scott Lloyd Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 To be taught and led personally by the Prophet of the Restoration, the man who has done more, save Jesus only for the salvation of the world than anyone who ever lived in it? What a wonderful privilege! I would be overjoyed for them.

Of course, you understand full well, I take it, that LDS regulations do not permit the bishop to do interviews without someone present in the outer office (usually a clerk or executive secretary). Tight rules also apply to summer camp for girls. Young women president and counselors (and others) are omnipresent, and typically sleep in guard position so as to prevent any inappropriate assignations. The road to the camp is guarded all night. Do you know about any of this from personal experience?
Calm Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 Why did you feel the need to ask yourself this question?Long time, Kemara! Good to see you. 1

So long as at least a couple of non-member"observers" were allowed to sit in the back of the room andtake note of any untoward "marriage" proposals that mightsuddenly pop up, in the middle of the class lecture. Non-member, because perhaps we could count upon theirnot having made any secret promises (or promised to keepany special secrets). -- Then again, the Nauvoo Council of 50had two non-members, who evidently never let out a peepabout what went on in their meetings, behind closed doors. So --- if said class is to be held in the upper story of thered brick store in Nauvoo, perhaps I might also stipulatethat the door to the classroom be left wide open. UD

As a TBM, and happy to call myself one, my thoughts are that your veiled (sincere question??? and no I don't take it as such) implication of routine and probable sexual misconduct is, at least to me, offensive. As if our daughters would not be safe from Joseph... what nonsense. I would like to quote Pres John Taylor on his association with Joseph:"I was associated with Joseph Smith for years. I have traveled with him; I have been with him in private and in public; I have associated with him in councils of all kinds; I have listened hundreds of times to his public teachings, and his advice to his friends and associates of a more private nature. I have been at his house and seen his deportment in his family. I have seen him arraigned before tribunals of his country, and have seen him honorably acquitted, and delivered from the pernicious breath of slander, and the machinations and falsehoods of wicked and corrupt men. I was with him living, and with him when he died, when he was murdered in Carthage jail by a ruthless mob...I have seen him, then, under these various circumstances, and I testify before God, angels, and men, that he was a good, honorable, virtuous man-- that his doctrines were good, scriptural, and wholesome-- that his precepts were such as became a man of God-- that his private and public character was unimpeachable-- and that he lived and died a man of God and a gentleman. This is my testimony. If it is disputed, bring me a person authorized to receive an affidavit, and I will make one to that effect. I therefore testify of things which I know and of things I have seen." (Teachings of the Pres of the Church) GG 7

Hestia Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 The opening post purports to be a "sincere question". It appears to be an offensive implication. Read the rules before posting again.
