Dear Evangelical Friends: Can A Mormon Be A Christian?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

A direct question to Canadaigua...

This is what Joseph Smith stated about the Gospel we preach:

“The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it”

What are the fundamental principles of your religion, and how are they different than ours?

According to Mormonism (LDS.org) salvation/exaltation requires an extensive list of works.

As I said multiple times before the subject of this thread is whether or not Evangelicals consider LDS Mormons.  The answer is no because of the reasons I have previously outlined namely:  1. LDS follow a different God.  2.  LDS follow a different gospel.

Which directly answers your question of the fundamental differences between Mormonism and Evangelical Christianity.

You have not answered my question to you. I get that you do not think LDS are Christian, now lets start from the basics and see what is different...

What are the fundamental principals of your religion?

According to Jesus, his Prophets and Apostles he chose to carry on his work taught that one must have a True Belief and Faith [pistis] to enter into his True Grace [charis] by Covenant. The gift is free but must be maintained by ones True Faith [pistis] in Jesus Christ. No once saved always saved.

Interesting that you should point to a list of works for salvation as a major difference.

In Matthew 19:16-26, when a rich young ruler asked Jesus what he must do, Jesus responded with a list of things to do.... He did not simply say "believe in Me".

Humm, what does this have to do with the topic of this thread? It is rather hypocritical of you to use the excuse that it would be off topic to answer a question while at the same time posting stuff that is off-topic.

Besides, don't you know that faith without works is dead?

As I said multiple times before the subject of this thread is whether or not Evangelicals consider LDS Mormons.

See above.

The answer is no because of the reasons I have previously outlined namely:  1. LDS follow a different God.  2.  LDS follow a different gospel.

So? That doesn't make us non-Christian.

Now, if you want to explain to us your different (and by definition, impotent) God please do so. After all, YOU have made it in line with the topic of this thread.

Now, do you want to discuss your impotent God?

Which directly answers your question of the fundamental differences between Mormonism and Evangelical Christianity.

Good thing that Modern American Protestant Evangelical Christianity is only a small portion of Christianity.

Does that mean that they are not Christian because they disagree with you?

That is part of the problem. There are a handful of Evangelical individuals that come to this board declaring that LDS are not Christian because we have a different God and different Gospel, seemingly speaking for the entire group, yet there is not one voice within the group.

There is no central authority on earth for Evangelical believers. There is a wide variety of belief within the Evangelical community, yet they are still included under the Christian umbrella.

That is why I ask the question: What are your fundamental principals of your religion? And once you have answered that, how do they differ from ours?

I have posted the fundamental principals of the LDS faith in post #574, if yours are different I would like to see how.

How very true. Protestants have been around for what 500 + years ?, what was going on before them ?. And coolrok7 will not check his own front and back door [At home and at ex-mormons for Jesus where he volunteers] to those that are critical of his form/model of christianity [Lutheranism]. He and Charlottee Pardee the director of exmfj in Orange county Ca. and they do not represent Christiandom and are minority voices in Christiandom. Hearing and seeing not. Motes and Beams, Casting Stones.

Motes and beams Anakin7? Not doing that to me?

I'm answering the thread question, not trying to pick a fight with you.

Evangelical is a term derived from the term Gospel (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 for example) concerning the good news about Jesus and our salvation from an eternal punishment in hell, through faith in Him by grace, not of works; not "after all we can do" as inserted into the equation by Joseph Smith, unjustifiably I believe.

I'm obligated to believe the truth of God (the Bible, Old/New Testaments, not anyone's opinion about things.

I've offered to meet with you many times in person to discuss these things but you've refused so far. We don't live that far apart.

I have faults and shortcomings I admit I see my Beams that come up and remove them by True Grace. thank you for bringing that to my attention. Not saying you are picking a fight !. Thank you for that "Evangelical" word scripture definition which I accept even as an LDS. Yes we are saved by " True Grace [charis] Through True Faith [pistis]". You once again misinterpet "After all that we can do" in 2 Nephi 25:23 try again. No witnesses or evidence he inserted anything in regards to Ephesians 2:8-9 and changed the meaning. I applaud you for your obligation as you read and study the bible through your Lutheran eyes. Do to my extremly busy church responsibilities taking care of my wife/work time is valuable and I am on the Lords errand but thanks for the reminder of past invites.

You keep repeating the "after all we can do" as a big difference... yet faith and works cannot be separated because faith without works is dead. Faith is not complete without "works".

When someone asked Jesus what he must do to gain eternal life(Matthew 19), Jesus did not tell him to simply believe, but gave him a list of things to do. When the young man said he has already done those things(keep the commandments), Jesus gave him one more thing to do... Jesus does not contradict "after all we can do", but reinforces it.

I'm obligated to believe the truth of God (the Bible, Old/New Testaments, not anyone's opinion about things.

That would be just fine except you are using someone's interpretation/opinion to tell you what the Bible means. Edited by Flyonthewall

Never made that point Vance. Let me speak for myself.

You are speaking for yourself. And I want to know if you are going to exclude them from Christianity because you disagree with them, like you want to exclude us from Christianity because you disagree with us.

What are the fundamental principals of your religion?

I have already mentioned the fundamentals--which is also what differentiates Evangelical Christianity and Mormonism.

1.  Belief in the true living God.

2.  Follow His plan that He has laid out.

Interesting that you should point to a list of works for salvation as a major difference.

In Matthew 19:16-26, when a rich young ruler asked Jesus what he must do, Jesus responded with a list of things to do.... He did not simply say "believe in Me".

There are dozens of verses that clearly teach that our salvation is based on faith and not works.  Contrast this to what Mormonism teaches which is faith and lots of works in order to be exalted.  These two viewpoints are completely opposite of each other and both can't be true.  This touches on the second main point that I have mentioned before  (1. In the true God of the Bible;   2.  What God has laid out for us to do and what is required for salvation. )

BTW I disagree with your interpretation of the verses in Matthew 19.  If you like we can discuss them.

This has everything to do with this thread.  See my posts just above and if you still don't understand I would be happy to try and explain it for you so you can understand it from the Evangelical point of view.
