Well, they are safe in that they are not doing drugs, having sex, watching bad movies, etc....  BUT they are up all night, they are still up ... I just got them a bunch of breakfast Kolaches thinking maybe more food would calm them down? (7 12yo girls)... what is your opinion about being the "party house"?  How much do you discipline your children's friends at your house?

Edit, nope, more food did not slow them down, they're starting up "Fruit Ninja" again.... this after a night of D&D...  LOL, is this the kind of thing most 12yo girls do, or should I be worried?

This brings back memories of sleepovers at my house, usually for a special birthday etc. and how ornery my child was the day after!  Changed, try to forget how tired you are and how ornery you daughter is going to be and chalk this up to being a fun parent!!  And it's ok if you had to be a little stern with them to get them to sleep, they probably think you're way nicer than their own parent.  :)

Never did this as a teen, hated mt teen years probably had one good friend for all of them and that wasn't until I was 17 and could drive and had a job where I met her (my Mom's health didn't allow us to have friends over) and while I did it for my son and he and the rest of us look back with great delight, it came to a grinding halt with my daughter at 12 and she has had a friend over since or made a new friend and is very lonely....if it makes your child happy and she has good people for her friends, it is a great blessing for her and you will hopefully be able to look back in gratitude you were able to give her such a great gift. I so wish I still could even though now she is in her 20s...anything to hear her laughing again with friends.

Not saying the last for a pity party, just to share how precious laughing with good friends can be from one who came to it and and sees the difference it made in my children's lives...one with it and one without.

I'm too old for this kind of thing.

There are certain ' special drinks' that can be prepared and distributed around 11 pm which aid in a good nights sleep for all concerned. The Nephites also had a good recipe but that might raise other issues.

You are not suggesting that you drug the partygoers I presume?  My advice is to require they go to sleep at least an hour before you are going to give out.  It will take them that long and there is less risk of unsupervised shenanigans.

He may have been thinking camomile tea or sleepy time tea, warm milk with a tough of vanilla and nutmeg...

Skip the melatonin...it can give nightmares, better for kids to try at home.

I was having a overnight with a bunch of friends....we we having lots of fun. We were climbing on a large dresser and it came down. I thought my dad was going to kill us...but he calmly walks in and stands it up and just as comply leave the room. I was 11 at the time. At 14 he bought us all (the boys) shotguns...so were are pumping and playing with them (keep in mind we grew up with guns and hunting). It was about 3AM...so,he gets up, picks up our ammo and goes back to bed without a word. But you should never get on to your kids (unless something really bad is going) in front of their friends, as the scriptures teach..."do not bring your children to wrath". My dad lived that principle.

My parents let our house be the hang-out house.

Five conversions and all seven children still fully active with those married married in the temple and all boys and girls of age having served missions.

It is anecdotal but seems like a success to me.

I know what you mean!!  I didn't reactivate in the Church until I was 55... but once I did I was all in.  Thankfully my dear non-LDS husband was completely supportive of me... so when the call went out for ward families to host stake YM/YW for a Fri night/Saturday dance and youth conference to be hosted by our ward, I asked my husband if he was up to it... he agreed so we signed up.  The result was that we hosted 9 young women and their leader...

We had to pick them up after the dance, so my husband made a sign with our last name on it and stood where the kids could see it and it worked like a charm...all those assigned to us came running over... and when I say running I mean running... what energy!  They were still geared up from the dance.

Our home had a downstairs with the guest rooms, the guest bath, a fridge in the laundry room (which I had stocked with all sorts of food/drinks)... I had beds, cots, sleeping bags, etc all made up for them... my husband had purchased enough stuffed animals so each girl could have one... he pinned a number on each one and then put numbers in a hat... the girls drew a number which corresponded to one of the animals... they loved it... We took pictures of the group which we sent them later.

Our home was such that we simply shut the door leading downstairs and let them go... we could hear them slightly and it went on for a several hours... I didn't envy the leader... but since the Conference was the next morning things settled down eventually.

My husband used to fix wonderful huge breakfasts when we'd have visitors, so he was up early.  I had set up the dining room table, which seated 10, the night before... so I helped do the fruit platters while he did bacon/sausage & gravy, eggs, potatoes, biscuits, and juices...

When we dropped them off at the Church the girls all hugged us and thanked us profusely... it was fun for us... and for several years afterward whenever I'd be at stake conf some of the girls would come up and give me a hug... a good experience.

My dear one died about a year later...

What a great memory to lighten the sorrow.

Party tradition at our house - first one asleep gets their face drawn on with sharpie marker (mustache, glasses etc.) ... parents keep sending their kids back for more, so I guess it's ok?  Friends are important, they say friends influence your kids more than you do... but hopefully you can help pick their friends :)

Anther story - we had a little party with 6yo's, had some YW come over to do face-painting, nails, etc. and they somehow got a hold of Halloween hair spray-paint (from the craft closet)... the result was not the planned "cute little heart on their cheek" sort of thing I was envisioning, but these out-of-control punked out kids... the next day was their little primary program, and half the kids in it still had traces of various "color" in their hair etc... oh, and glitter bombs, anyone know how to get glitter out of carpet & hair?  that stuff is the devil!!!

Be Glad they aren't boys!  Just kidding.  I let my boys have big sleepovers for their birthdays.  They invite 9 or 10 close friends.... play video games, watch movies, play D and D... my husband monitors the nighttime stuff and I cook clean. Cook. Clean etc.... I would rather have them under my roof and it lets me get to know their friends and their friends to know us.  I'm sure these sleepovers are coming to an end soon, but they have been worthwhile all the way around.  I might have a different opinion if it was me shutting them down for the night.  It helps that I have a basement setup where I can hear all they say.... and I can just throw bags of food down to them.  Also... rule is that if you don't monitor your guests mess... you clean it up after they leave!  I was much more mischievous at their age and so far I haven't seen any of the problems or trouble I used to get into... I will happily continue the sleepovers if they want to.
