Scott Lloyd Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 Yeah but look at your percentages.Nearly half your posts get a rep point. That's tremendous! That's what counts imo. They should have those ratios displayed imoAgain, ratios don't tell a totally accurate story, for there are some (perhaps many) who posted a great deal before rep points were instituted. Perhaps if the ratio were only reckoned from the beginning of the rep point system, it would be more meaningful.
Scott Lloyd Posted April 4, 2014 Author Posted April 4, 2014 I've rep'd up one-sentence comments before. Mainly Nehor's...his one-liner's make me snicker. Stop worrying about earning. Rep points can show something is worthwhile to read. But sometimes it's a way to say "thank you," or "cool," or "haha," or "man you could use a rep today, it's been cruddy" or "I like what you generally say." You're WAY over-analyzing this and assuming far more into rep-points than its worth. It's an up-arrow ticker, not an award system. You will not get a blender for making it past a certain mark. No checks in the mail for amazing contributions will flow. Prestige will not flow to you like milk and honey (well, maybe to Cal....but who could possibly not like her?).This is the definition of making mountains out of mole-hills. With luv,BD Yes, a one-sentence post could conceivably be more brilliant than any number of multi-paragraph treatises. 2

mfbukowski Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yes, a one-sentence post could conceivably be more brilliant than any number of multi-paragraph treatises.I try to make my posts as terse as I can, and to the point. The problem though is sometimes they come out as "obscure" because they don't give enough background, so it's a bit of a balancing act.

One only has to look at high count posters like Charity who has a low rep count and hasn't posted for several years to get that the ratio is off.Yes, that was it- they deleted a bunch of threads so the counts went down, but as I recall my ratios stayed about the same after that reduction. But now I don't understand how that could have happened. Ok you convinced me! So lower ratios should not be seen has hurting someone because of this but I still count high ratios and a major indicator that someone is doing very well indeed. So high ratios are like "extra credit points". If you got 'em it's really cool but if you don't it's no biggie 1

Balancing terseness with providing essential information and background is the essence of good journalism -- and writing in general. 1

But who's counting?
why me Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Why Me: You think some relatives create accounts just to up a person's rep points? That doesn't seem likely. I think if I were to make such a request of a family member, they would look at me like I'm insane.I don't know of course. But it wouldn't be impossible. I think that we know the posters who deserve a high rep point score, especially those of us who have been around awhile. But it is all relative. For example, if I suddenly became a critic of the church on this board, I would be getting rep points from other critics. Likewise if I were questioning the church on this board. Critics can get high rep points because they are in a minority here and other critics can award them quite liberally. But it wouldn't be impossible for a son or daughter to sign up on the board, discuss and post new topics and reward mom or dad accordingly if they also post on the board. Rep points can create a tendency to post for the rep points. Most of the people look at their own rep points and check if they scored any good posts yesterday etc. At the end of the day, it does set up a ranking system of posters, a sort of hierarchy of posters. We also need to remember that some posters can read by many other posters while some may be skimmed or ignored regardless of they do post good posts. Readers do have their favorite posters to read since time is short, especially in the workplace or at home. Edited April 4, 2014 by why me
Calm Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Most of the people look at their own rep points and check if they scored any good posts yesterday etc. And you know this how? Most people I've had conversations about rep points with are usually asking what they are so hardly could be keeping track of them. Those that do know what they are often talk about how they suddenly become aware that they are close to some round number of significance…again a sign that they aren't paying that close of attention. After I post something I never go back to see what got points and what didn't- but it would be interesting if you could search for posts that got points. I haven't really ever tried to do that because I don't want to be influenced by what people like- I want to just post what I want to, but it might be interesting to see what works and what doesn't.
Calm Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Under your profile, there is a category called reputation. It shows your posts that have got points or the posts that you give points to.You received several 4s and 5s on the first two pages....I guess one good thing writing endless posts does for me is it doesn't occur to me to intentionally craft them to get high points, it would be way too much effort to be doing that all the time, lol. Calm Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Surely I don't have even 6000 points, let alone well over. Now I have to go check...Add-on: don't know where that last hundred points came from, could have sworn I was closer to 5900.You guys are too nice. And there really should be no sense of obligation to give me points just because I give you some. Spread the wealth. Edited April 5, 2014 by calmoriah

Have not seen either for a long while.
Calm Posted April 6, 2014 Posted April 6, 2014 I haven't heard from them, perhaps someone else has. Miss them both and worry about Charity, she wasn't doing very good.
3DOP Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) I have noticed that rep points may not be that representative. I have followed one poster who seems to score at least 6 rep points a day which may tell me that the poster has a personal fan, perhaps a family member giving rep points. But who knows. I think that rep points can be representative of the quality of posts. But the mods can fish out rep points that may be coming from a particular person to shore up a mom, a dad or friend. No way why me. No way. Good night, I am vain. I know it. I follow the points. I just hit a thousand. I check frequently. But to put somebody up to it for me? How would that feed my vanity? That would defeat the purpose and end the fun of it. What would the persons who I asked to do it for me think? How embarrassing to be thought to be caring about something so trifling as rep points. Oh wait, that will sure play big at the Judgment Seat someday when it is pointed out how I failed in charity. I guess I could object, "But Lord, Iook at all my rep points." Calm Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Amen....I have a very big suspicion that he would respond "and what could you have been doing to serve your God and your fellowman instead of collecting points?"
Tacenda Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 (edited) Just click on any rep point box and you can tell who has given points. That is why it is obvious to people that I've given out so many. I don't go around saying it to them in PMs. That would take even more time than I want to spend on the boards. For example, in the second post in this thread I believe, bluebell got points from Val, me, Bluedreams and Ken.And no one will get a rep point from me. Now I know what Satan and the 1/3 of the host feel like, thrust out of heaven without a body, I've no ability to give rep points, because I've been put on "limited". Edited April 7, 2014 by Tacenda

I don't award you unless you say something I agree with and you say it well -- which is almost all of the time.

I think if I were to make such a request of a family member, they would look at me like I'm insane.Since I have a limited account for personal comments a year and a half ago...I have asked if my son who wants to post (as he is back from his mission) but I have never received a reply. But hey, I have, picked up over 1,100 rep points since being limited. In fact both my sons want to post here, as both love to debate theology as I do...my daughters not so much. In any event, I have my friends here. I have thought at times I would go away when I have 10% reps points to posts! but can't catch up. I have made two moves which would allow me to use different POS's to break the rules...but that is distasteful to me. I hope my request to be reinstated will be granted...but nothing so far. But ya know the mods have a thankless job, and I will abide their wishes.
