Who Is The Holy Ghost?

Recommended Posts

One of my past institute teachers suggested that the Holy Ghost might be someone who will be the Jesus of another world one day. What are your thoughts on who the Holy Ghost is. Have they lived yet do you think?

I find the vast majority of this type of speculation to be highly suspect if not utterly false.  To me it has all the benefit of a debate about if the color red is really red. All we are told is that the Holy Spirit is the third member of the Godhead; the great Comforter; with a whole host of additional appellations.

All I know is that the holy ghost has the power to deliver revelation, to bring comfort and to sanctify our souls. To do this, he (or she as katherine points out) must be a spirit. So there are some divine rolls that only spirits can perform. It could be that the Holy ghost is not a person but a title or an assignment. It could be shared or it could be a temporary assignment. It could be a training roll for us in some way to serve for a time in the divine first presidency.

Oh, there is no way to know, and any doctrine is speculative.  But I personally would lean more towards the Joseph Smith idea than the Heavenly Mother idea.  But there's no proof of anything, not even in the scriptures.

But I don't believe that the Holy Ghost will be the Jesus of another world.  I believe that the only people who minister to this earth are those who dwelled (or will dwell) upon it.

If it is one individual I would be surprised if s/he hasn't been through mortality yet. This is because a great deal of comfort comes from knowing Christ experienced what we did, he knows through personal experience as well as connecting so deeply with us what we need and feel. Perhaps it is just experience as the Comforter and his oneness with the Father and the Son that gives the Holy Spirit so much empathy but it is logical to me that s/he also lived a mortal life.

Pure speculation of course.

I find John 16:7 interesting in that it implies the two are not on the earth at the same time. However, I am old school and think that the Holy Spirit is a permanent member of the Godhead and carrys out the role through the eternities. Perhaps a unique type of being/intelligence.

What's the basis, if any, for the notion that the Holy Ghost will be the last person born on earth?  Something that I recall hearing long ago.

or maybe the first person? ;)

Christ paid it all. The Holy Spirit's job is that of motivator and comforter. God is not a woman fertile or infertile, because God is the one and only and will not/cannot reproduce anyone like himself.

Who tells him he cannot? That is a strange thought to me.

We believe in God the Eternal Father and in his Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost. I cannot imagine that the Holy Ghost is anything other than the 3rd member of the Godhead and has a body of spirit as taught by scripture. I cannot conceive that it is only a title or calling, but rather it is a personage of spirit.

The rest of the speculation as far as gender is pretty irrelevant to me.

The general LDS consensus is that the Holy Ghost is a male personage. The following excerpt from a 1974 General Conference address by Marion G. Romney undergirds this belief:

"Jesus referred to the Holy Ghost as a male person. Speaking to his disciples, he said:

“… It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” (John 16:7. Italics added.)

And further,

“… when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” (John 16:13–14. Italics added.)

“That the [Holy Ghost] is capable of manifesting Himself in the form and figure of man,” wrote Dr. James E. Talmage, “is indicated by the wonderful interview between the Spirit and Nephi, in which He revealed Himself to the prophet, questioned him concerning his desires and belief, instructed him in the things of God, speaking face to face with the man. ‘I spake unto him,’ says Nephi, ‘as a man speaketh; for I beheld that he was in the form of a man; yet nevertheless, I knew that it was the Spirit of the Lord; and he spake unto me as a man speaketh with another.’” (Discourses on the Holy Ghost, comp. N. B. Lundwall, Bookcraft, Inc., 1959, p. 13.)

D&C 130:5 There are no angels who minister to this earth but those who do belong or have belonged to it.

John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

"...the Holy Ghost is a man; he is one of the sons of our Father and our God; and he is that man that stood next to Jesus Christ, just as I stand by brother Brigham." (Heber C. Kimball, JD 5:179)

The Holy Ghost is yet a spiritual body and waiting to take to himself a body as the Savior did or as God did or the gods before them took bodies. (Words of Joseph Smith, pg. 382)

If the Holy Ghost were Michael, he wouldn't have been waiting to take a body in 1844. We also know that the Holy Ghost isn't the Father or the Son.

edited to add:

"It is true that the earth was organized by three distinct characters, namely, Eloheim, Yahovah, and Michael, these three forming a quorum, as in all heavenly bodies, and in organizing element, perfectly represented in the Deity, as Father, Son, and Holy Ghost." (Brigham Young, JD 1:51)

My thought is that the Holy Ghost is a breakoff of God. Jesus was God in the flesh, the HG is Jesus who is God, in spirit. That dwells within us, because Jesus/God left the earth, but wanted us to know He is still there, and never really left. Holy Spirit and Holy Ghost, same thing. Three in one.

Three-in-One is an oil: http://www.3inone.com used for loosening rusty bolts.

The three members of the Godhead are separate and distinct beings.

Joseph Smith taught that a spirit with a body (you) has power over a spirit without a body.

If you resist the devil, who is only a spirit, he will flee from you (James 4:7).

On the other hand if you resist the Holy Ghost, He will withdraw from you.

This is why you are a moral agent and have to choose which spirit you will obey, because neither can force you what to do.

So we are in this mortal realm away from resurrected and glorified beings, The Father and The Son, to be tried and tested.

So your thoughts and actions determine in large part which spirit will reside with you.

Since the devil is in opposition to God, then the Holy Ghost is God.

What is a breakoff?  Like a separated limb?  Or like a group of people leaving another group of people?

Think of a candle's flame, then take two other candles and light from the first candle's flame, that's a breakoff of the main flame. Three separate but still one flame to begin with that stays the same.

What you are describing here is the light of Christ that flows out from God and fills the immensity of space with the light and power of God. The Holy Ghost is a spirit personage in the same way we were personages of spirit prior to our incarnation on earth. In other words, the Holy Ghost is a man who has not as yet been embodied. In the 88th section of the Doctrine and Covenants we find the description of the light of Christ that issues forth from God in the manner you set forth in your post:

12 Which light proceedeth forth from the presence of God to fill the immensity of space

13 The light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed, even the power of God who sitteth upon his throne, who is in the bosom of eternity, who is in the midst of all things.

This sounds more Trinitarian Catholic, than Mormon. We have very little information about the Holy Ghost other than the Holy Ghost is a separate personage and does not have a physical body. I have little faith in relying on the use of pronouns to state categorically that the Holy Ghost is male. It would in some ways be more consistent with our beliefs if it turned out to be Heavenly Mother, except she has a body.

Well, I like the thought of it, maybe I'm suppose to be Catholic.

I was already painfully aware of that unfortunate fact, but thanks for all the bolded Hes and Hims. :)

I think our (current) LDS consensus is wrong. The nice thing is, with our doctrine of Heavenly Mother, we are in an excellent spot to incorporate archaeological findings into our religion, no sweat (if we'd just get over the D&C-contradicting idea that GAs are infallible and omniscient). I think the evidence related to The Enduring Symbolism Of Doves is much more in favor of a feminine Ma'at/ruach ha-kodesh/Lady Wisdom/Sophia/Dove-Goddess. See, for instance, the Acts of Thomas:

Holy Dove that bearest the twin young;
Come, hidden Mother;
Come, thou that art manifest in thy deeds
and dost furnish joy and rest for all that are joined with thee;
Come and partake with us in this Eucharist
Which we celebrate in thy name,

and in the love-feast in which we are gathered together at thy call.

Or the Gospel of the Hebrews:

Origen on John, ii. 12. And if any accept the Gospel according to the Hebrews, where the Saviour himself saith, 'Even now did my mother the Holy Spirit take me by one of mine hairs, and carried me away unto the great mountain Thabor', he will be perplexed, etc. ...

On Jeremiah, homily xv.4. And if anyone receive that saying, 'Even now my mother the Holy Spirit took me and carried me up unto the great mountain Thabor', and the rest.

Or the Gospel of Philip:

Some said, "Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit." They are in error. They do not know what they are saying. When did a woman ever conceive by a woman?

Etc., etc..
