Can We Mormons Get Our Groove On?

Ok. And in our culture, for example, rock music is the language of most if not a large percentage of the population, yet this is not deemed worshipful?

My other point is that worship is for God, not other people. The statement was that some instruments have a "less worshipful sound." How could this be if worship is directed to God, and he looks at the intent of the heart?

Ah yes.

There is no popular association between sex drugs and rock n roll.

Definitely worshipful.

I can't get no spiritual satisfaction.  Great idea.

I think calmoriah and I have both already answered that. The problem is the unsavory association it might bring to the minds of some of the congregants. Music or other stimuli that potentially hinder some of the people in the meeting from enjoying the sublime peace and serenity that a worship service should bring to all present could hardly be pleasing to our Father in Heaven.

If my Church defined worship as an atmosphere of sublime peace and serenity then we'd have to excise the Book of Psalms from our Bibles.

If one wants to worship by oneself, one doesn't have to be concerned about how others might react to one's behaviour.  If one wants to worship with people, it is generally a good idea not to engage in behaviour that creates for them a lack of spirit rather than one that invites the spirit.

Since what does this varies from person to person, it is easiest to simply abide by the faith community's usual standard unless the group is very small and one can take the time to ask and prepare such as in a family home evening or empty nester gathering.  I assume other faiths' study groups often have music during their time so this could be a chance to try some new stuff if all are agreeable in the smaller group.

I was specifically interested in musical types, which was mentioned in the handbook, as not being 'worshipful'.  I wouldn't describe a musical type as a behavior, would you? Nor do I think that any type of music is more or less worshipful, which is why I was looking for some reasoning behind the statement.

So the basis for not allowing rock and roll is the popular association it has?

And of course a secular song isn't a worshipful song. Yet, I have heard that some of the hymns of old were old secular tunes with "worshipful" words attached to them.

Hey that's not my fault. Apostates are apostates.  ;)

I still say Gregorian Chant is the best.  ;)
