Where gods and matter end?

Pres Hinckley may have been playing it cagey for the outside media, not wishing to discuss the mysteries with the unwashed masses.

Are you thinking of Paul and the unnamed god?

Maybe that applies. But I'm also thinking of all the Christian martyrs who testified of the truth to the unwashed masses, believing the truth was more important than the consequences.

I have in mind the teachings of the rabbis to avoid the mysteries, particularly when you are young and lacking  in wisdom.  St Paul (a Pharisaic rabbi) similarly  recommended milk before meat in teaching the Gospel.  Pres Hinckley was baited in a number of instances on the mysteries.  I don't consider it likely that he did not know anything about them, but rather cautiously refrained from discussing matters beyond the ability of ordinary people to understand -- particularly since the occasion was an interview by mass media.

What do you see as the difference between "cautiously refraining from discussing matters beyond the ability of ordinary people to understand" and avoiding controversial topics when the audience is national television?

I think that's the general interpretation. Although it's also fair to say that while there's the typical common belief on all this, there's far less with clear revelation than most assume.  It's dangerous, for example, to assume everything in the King Follet Discourse is revelation and not just Joseph's understanding. Especially considering the teaching on the resurrection of children in it that typically wasn't included when the discourse was included in manuals. (Admittedly back in the 90's which was the last time it was a full topic in PH/RS - although segments ended up in the Joseph Smith Teachings of the Prophet manual - although again not the resurrection stuff) Anyway, I'm not sure it's technically wrong for Hinkley to say it's a bit unclear. It technically is although I tend to assume the traditional take on the King Follet Discourse is correct. Again Blake Ostler's views represent the alternative take on it all. That may well have been known by Hinkley given that Blake used to talk about such things with Neil Maxwell fairly regularly as I understand.

In any case it's a complicated discussion not exactly conducive to a sound bite.

I don't know , but I've been told , that the observable universe is DEADLY to organic life ( as we know it ) . Without very precise controls and protections life could not begin let alone thrive. Much is made of all the planets discovered, and hope springs eternal for intelligent life beyond Earth. So far....noseeums.

Not sure what you mean. There's lots of radiation in space. We're protected by our planet's magnetic field. Is that what you mean?

Typical of "Goldilocks" planets.

The sort of thing we sometimes hear from members of a temple presidency in a chapel session in one of our temples  might not be appropriate for discussion outside our temples, and even less so in mass media presentations.

Of course, almost anything seems open to discussion on this board. 😎

Yes, and that missing mass and energy constitute around 96% of everything.  Yet we cannot see it.   We are woefully ignorant.
