Remember just a few months ago when SSM posts were all the rage and the mods were busily running around locking them up. Usually there were three or four going at a time. So now women and the Priesthood threads are multiplying like rabbits. So does the popularity of threads connect directly to whatever disruptive issue is currently grabbing media attention?

Of course.  You expected it to be different?  Like we're now going to discuss something that isn't at the front of many people's minds? 

 

Here's my topic: Was the wood the True Cross made of "oak" or "cedar"?  That should be good for 20 pages, right?

Well, I am still pretty new, but I for one have had enough discussion about Women and the Priesthood.  There are so many interesting doctrines to discuss, and we get sidetracked into politics and the sociological side of the church (and a surprisingly large amount of science).  I much prefer to discuss doctrine - now if only I could think of a specific topic to post about...how about determining if the pearly gates open inward or outward.

Absolutely not! It has to do with the steadiness of the Church: “And now, because of the steadiness of the church they began to be exceedingly rich, having abundance of all things whatsoever they stood in need—an abundance of flocks and herds, and fatlings of every kind, and also abundance of grain, and of gold, and of silver, and of precious things, and abundance of silk and fine-twined linen, and all manner of good homely cloth.” (Alma 1:29)

 

…or maybe the opposite, “And it was filled with people, both old and young, both male and female; and their manner of dress was exceedingly fine; and they were in the attitude of mocking and pointing their fingers towards those who had come at and were partaking of the fruit.” (1 Nephi 8:27)

I'm pretty sure the major topics of discussion were polygamy, evolution, youth listening to inappropriate music, and women wearing pants.  Good to see we've moved on since then.

The church was still dealing with polygamy...I think. But at the time, in America, the church wasnt religiously or culturally relevant either.

I'd like to discuss more interesting topics such as nephilim, elioud, demons, archangels, Daddy issues, Kids with tantrums, lies about Heaven, lies about Hell. Those are so much more fun than BoM characters as types of Christ, or BoA authenticity, praying, women/prood, homosexuality, polygamy, testimonies, etc. Those are so drab and mundane.

Oh, by the way Valentinus, while sitting in biological anthro lecture the other day I was pondering on your bringing up the nephilim in another thread a week or so ago.

 

It dawned on me that if one goes with the viewpoint that nephilim are indeed the offspring of angels and humans this demonstrates that they are, in fact, the same species according to the definition thereof.

It dawned on me that if one goes with the viewpoint that nephilim are indeed the offspring of angels and humans this demonstrates that they are, in fact, the same species according to the definition thereof.

Nephilim are hybrids. They are the literal offspring of angels and humans. Since angels (the first born) and humans are not cut from the same DNA then they are not the same species. Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, etc are not and never were of human make up and DNA in the same way that you and I are. The nephilim and elioud are not fully human and not fully angel. Their genetic make up is much different.

For two different species to breed through sexual intercourse (as is the implication between the sons of God and the daughters of man) they must be of at least the same family if not genus, implying that there is a close genetic makeup between humanity and angels. Furthermore these offspring nearly always infertile. If the nephilim were capable of sexual reproduction themselves it implies an even closer genetic relationship between humanity, leaving the genus and family and drawing even closer to species/sub-species relationship.

Of course, I'm applying biological taxonomy, theory and fact to a piece of theology, which is deliciously fun, but also incredibly apt to leading us in a completely wrong direction. So I'm not going to get too bummed out or too pumped up about the results of this little argument. It is a fun one though.

There is always a thread on evolution going, I believe.....I think the mods just leave them open as if they close it, another one just pops up.

I do like your take on this. But I do have to disagree. Angels have the divine spark in them and humans do not. Biology as we understand it cannot apply.
