Saints Alive Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 What's the point of this thread? How does it further dialogue?
Stargazer Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 (edited) What's the point of this thread? How does it further dialogue?Has your sense of humor been surgically removed or something? I think the "tongue in cheek" point is that we priesthood holders get admonished a lot about how we should treat women. As far as gender equality is concerned, a little "good for the goose as well as the gander" might possibly be in order. Edited December 17, 2012 by Stargazer 1
Saints Alive Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 No I understood that but I don't think it does anything to further the issue. Perhaps it does and I don't see it. The type of women that have issues with gender equality in the church aren't the types that would find trivialization of their cause funny. So this type of satire (however funny) only alienates. I think it would be more productive to actually discuss the issues.

Maybe that's part of their problem. From a quote i heard a long time ago, "God doesn't send anybody away empty, except those who are full of themselves." 5
Tacenda Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I happen to like the way men handle teaching lessons etc. Simplifying has it's merits in alot of ways. Though RS teachers have scaled back alot on giving handouts out etc.Another biggy in my book is that men usually have to help with members move out of their homes. Thanks to the Elder's Quorum. So it's pretty equal usually. Sometimes we women make more work for ourselves. I know I do. I have alot of respect for men in our church. 2

In all honesty I love and celebrate the fact that we thrive best when spoken to differently. I work best when you tell me straight up what I need to do better. My wife would be devastated. Our Heavenly Father understands that we need to be addressed differently. I guess my main point here is that gender equality would be a sword that would cut both ways and a very, very small minority don't understand that.
Freedom Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I was going to organize a wear-no-tie-to-church-day but realized that a tie is the only way to cover up the stains on my white shirts that I am compelled to wear. 1

My mother and she was a saint, once told me, men have the Priesthood because they can't have babies. So they feel like they have something just as significant. I guess that might be why I've never really had a problem. Maybe it's that mentality that causes women to say what they do. I've never felt less than a man. But understand some women might have been treated as such. But for the majority of my life, women are very equal. 1

blackstrap Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I vote for turtle necks or Nehru jackets . ( No I don't ). How about golf shirts so a guy doesn't have to change after church? 1
Saints Alive Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 How about golf shirts so a guy doesn't have to change after church? No there is an idea! How about we just dress for whatever activity we plan for after church? Going to the beach, fishing, skiing, etc.

I get the humor in this and appreciate it. It made me laugh out loud. At the same time, and seriously, I agree with you on all points. As a woman in the church, I have never felt less than favored. I hear "cherished", "celestial", "wise", "organized", "patient", "forgiving", etc., etc. What I most often hear about the men is how much they need the women for EVERYTHING. And the men are usually the ones saying this too.The buck stops with the wife - in a respectful sense, of course. This goes all the way back to Joseph and Emma as we understand them. I am reminded of the word of wisdom and how it came about. I really do see that if there is gender inequality - it is the women that get more respect and attention for their abilities. I like things just the way they are. 2

Going to the beach, fishing, skiing, etc.In some protestant churches, this is now the norm for Sunday dress.T shirts, jeans, flipflops, tank tops etc. I think it goes with the recuring theme of " you are good enough just as you are" . Mind you, we could use a little of that... (saved for another thread.) Edited December 17, 2012 by blackstrap

KevinG Posted December 17, 2012 Posted December 17, 2012 I can make a strong argument that men have the priesthood at this time of mortality because it directly combats the social movement to make men superfluous to the family. Having said that we do need to be preached repentance from time to time and the sisters do tend to judge themselves harshly- so I don't mind seeing them praised for their efforts.I was at a BYU devotional during the feminist protests in Utah (circa 1993) and Boyd Packer said to a group of BYU priesthood holders (me included) "If men honored their priesthood like they should there wouldn't be a woman in the world, much less the church, who questions why we have it." 3

I don't even write on the white board. Not to toot my own horn but we have a new sister that moved into the ward this last week and she approached me yesterday after the lesson. She complimented the lesson and explained that she liked my teaching style, I kept her focused and interested. "That's hard to do," she added with a smile. I just talk when I teach but I walk around, I don't just stand in front of a table the whole time. And my lessons are interactive, I don't just blab dry words while everyone tries to listen. I talk WITH my sisters, not TO them. I try to keep the tone as it would be amongst gathered friends and family - as it should be, IMHO.Edit to add: I should admit, I do feed the sisters platters of Grandma Lou's fudge. I am sure that gives everyone a jolt of energy and good dose of joy. Edited December 17, 2012 by Nominee 2
