Duncan Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I hope I can go target shooting once in a while. You and King David!
Duncan Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 As a believer in the 2nd amendment and a gun owner myself I still must admit to the appeal of turning the other cheek. The very courageous decision of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis rather than fight they chose to lay down and die at the hands of their enemies. That act converted many too. The Book of Mormon has a place for both pacifism, and protection with the use of deadly force.Duncan I appreciate your participation in this thread. I think if ever in the situation I would defend my family with force, however if in a situation were it only myself I think I also could choose to die rather than actually kill someone. A position I hope never to be in.My prayers go out to those families in Aurora.I agree a hundred percent! i would defend my family as well but I don't own a weapon of any kind except, like Mr. Furley, I have been learning karate by mail for years-made my whole body a weapon
Duncan Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Confused you are. Guns you equate with violence. Guns can be used for violence but they can also be used for recreational target shooting. The difference is not in the gun but in the user.well, I don't see the point of target shooting but that's neither here nor there but I see what you mean-how do suppose we eliminate hatred and violence among each other?
ERayR Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 wars are one thing and violence is anotherI wish you would quit equating owning guns with violence. Violent people are violent with or without guns. Violent people are violent with knives, or tire irons, or rocks or even baseball bats or their fists. When you insinuate that gun owners are all violent you are accusing me of being violent. I own guns. I don't know how you can make such a blanket claim when you do not even know me or even any significant percentage of the gun owners. Please refrain from false accusations.
ERayR Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 well, I don't see the point of target shooting but that's neither here nor there but I see what you mean-how do suppose we eliminate hatred and violence among each other? There are several recreational activities that I don't see any point in.
Anijen Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I don't see the point of target shooting Target shooting (plinking) is great fun. My family love it.Target shooting is a sport and one Joseph Smiths body guard (Porter Rockwell) was extremely good at. Porter was also encouraged to develop that talent. The point of target shooting beside the enjoyment is to increase your skill level. Here in Nebraska with the many farms there comes with that a huge vermin problem. It is easiest to shoot these vermin at night (using night vision) because that is when most come out. Having accurate skills at target shooting enables you to get the maximum with the least amount of bullets (or pellets) used (saves money). The rats and other rodent problems can spread disease, ruin crops, antagonize the livestock etc. They are a huge problem in some areas, using a small caliber (twenty-two or a air rifle) is a good way to keep them under control. It is usually a chore the kids like to do.Target shooting makes one more accurate so when hunting the percentage of providing food is greater.
Darren10 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 wars are one thing and violence is anotherI agree. Buying a gun is not inherently violent and thus not inherently opposed by the LDS Church.

A position I hope never to be in. My prayers go out to those families in Aurora.Good point. Furthermore, I'm sure that the Nephites could go out and buy a sword without registering it to the government. Heck, as a non-betting man (betting's against my religion ; >) ), I'd wager they could do the same with bows and arrows.
Darren10 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 You and King David!Ummmm, that was very inappropriate. Are you suggesting that ERayR desires to murder someone just to have that person's wife? If so, not cool, Duncan, VERY not cool.

If so, not cool, Duncan, VERY not cool. What else is not cool is that Duncan has been insinuating that anybody who would own guns is a violent person.

ERayR Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 well, I don't see the point of target shooting but that's neither here nor there but I see what you mean-how do suppose we eliminate hatred and violence among each other? The same way asEnoch and Alma. Preach the Gospel of Christ.

I am willing to stand corrected but I don't recall saying so because I don't believe itI accept that you didn't mean to say it that way but I felt a tone of guns and gun owners equal violence. Must have misunderstood your intent.

blackstrap Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Lest we forget, guns were invented to increase the ability of man to KILL things, mostly people. They, like all weapons, extend the arm of man and the extent of his power. They may be put to other purposes ie. recreational pursuits, but let us not think that the main purpose of a gun is to hit paper targets. King David probably spent a lot of time practicing hitting trees or rodents, but the main purpose was to increase his ability to dissuade deadly predators at a distance. And what is a most deadly predator if not man.
Darren10 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 hardly! He was a good sharpshooter is allAh. Talking about flinging the rocks? That's cool. Except that I doubt David ( pre-king) had to register the rocks with the government, do you? So why would it be bad to allow guns to be sold in the classified ads? David never went on a rock-throwing rampage that I'm aware of. Now, power getting to his head is a different matter all together, but no rock violence from David.
Darren10 Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I see that and agree with you and again as I have said people who live in the country or on farms on whatnot use guns for better purposes such as protecting livestock and farm uses rather then going into theatres and shooting up the placeAnd personally I would not mind Jeff Holt next to me in the theaters were a mad gunman start to break down. In fact at that point I'd be prayin' that Jeff came armed...to the teeth even.It also worries me when people care to empower government to regulate purchases on things people "need". The LDS believe that the Constitution is an inspired document...2nd Amendment included.
Calm Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 But cigarettes and alcohol consumption is inherently immoral under LDS beliefs.Only for those who have made covenants....though I feel like cigarettes are inherently stupid.
Calm Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Confused you are. Guns you equate with violence. Guns can be used for violence but they can also be used for recreational target shooting. The difference is not in the gun but in the user.Reminds of people who like to blow up things....like me! Like fires as well. Doesn't mean I will become an arsonist anytime soon.
Calm Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 There are several recreational activities that I don't see any point in.Football, hockey, boxing...all pretty violent.Matter of fact I used to be covered in bruises from gymnastics.
Calm Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Target shooting makes one more accurate so when hunting the percentage of providing food is greater. My dad would shoot the squirrels that were destroying the trees, not good for the trees, not good for the squirrels as eventually they would lose home and at least one source of food.More accuracy makes for less animal suffering as well.
