I don't mean to be a post hog but I couldnt resist posting this image;

Romney_guns.jpg

I wonder if we could have a caption contest. Mine might be "eleven reasons to vote for Mitt" (eleven rifles).

eleven reasons why I would never vote for Romney-I can't because I don't live in the States!

I wouldn't support any kind of pro gun thing the Church came out with-i.e petitions going around or any of that kind of thing. I don't even like to sing, "Onward Christian soldiers"!!! I just don't like any kind of militarism and Mormonism getting latched together. I just want to see a society that hate and violence in gone. I also live in teh real world as well and know that not everyone is sane and not a criminal. If you are determined to gon a shooting rampage you'll find a way but I would like to see less and less mass killings and for society to leanr something from them

You are exactly right. Statistics like these are one sided and quoted for one purpose only (gun control or legislating that all guns are illegal). They do not give all the statistics such as you have mentioned. I have a stat that gives a more detailed report but can not find it right now. It basically says the many gun murders in the US are in the largest part committed by gangs in which almost all of the gang members would not be allowed to purchase a gun.

Just thinking out loud and defending the 2nd amendment

Anijen.

Your 2nd amendment needs some recalculating if you ask me-make it an all state law that you can' t have machine gun type weapons, only hunting weapons and only for hunting purposes. I can't for the life of me see why anyone needs an automatic weapon, if someone considered it fun to shoot uzis on the weekend I would be think twice about them and that's judgy I know

The US military is the most efficient killing machine the world has ever known. Why do you think they send up flares to light up the night sky, and smoke bombs to camouflage their own movements? It makes our side less visible and their side more visible. No pie in the sky Rambo superhero antics. What are you going to shot at in a darkened, smoke filled, crowded theater?

I've been in firefights. The first thing you do is seek cover. Ideally where you can see them and they can't see you.

Not out of cowardice, but in an effort to keep fighting.

Could you expand...there are many more guns around any President. Again guns are not evil...it is the one who is in control of it. Also it not evil to have them.

I know that but if I was PM I would be leary of a pro-gun president-again my views on American Politics don't matter because I can't vote. I just don't want to see repeats of the latest shooting-like is there anything we can do about it to prevent it from happening again? how about tighter gun laws to prevent the wrong type of gun from getting into the wrong person's hands.

It is pretty easy with tritium sights.

Politicians have been hammering away at gun laws since 1934. I am a very staunch defender of the Constitution and I firmly believe in the Second Amendment. Remember Nauvoo was asked to give up all their guns (before they were forced to Leave). The Church has a strong history of forming militias for the purpose of protecting its citizens, Joseph was even a General in Nauvoo. I am not so much a militia guy, but I will still defend the Bill of Rights and my family.

Like I wrote in a previous post; Automatic weapons are very hard to get. They are classified as a category three weapon and not many outside of law enforcement can get them. Many semiautomatic weapons are made to look like machine guns and that is what most people are talking about. There is a vast difference between semiautomatic (one bullet per trigger pull) to holding in the trigger and the gun just spraying out bullets.

There was not a single automatic weapon (machine gun) used at either Columbine or Aurora, yet the outcry to outlaw them always happen after tragedy like these.

Automatic weapons are very hard to get. The shooters used Semi-auto (one bullet per trigger pull) that looked like automatic weapons.

I know and that's fine but Canada has a different set of laws. For example handguns are all licensed and you can't own certain ones and you need permits and all kinds of legal stuff. They basically don't just hand them out to just anyone. Here is a question for anyone-will Zion have guns?

Same here in the US every handgun is registered. Almost anyone can buy a twenty-two over the counter but a handgun is very regulated here in the US already (very similar to Canada), not too many people realize this.

Define Zion, if you mean the "pure in heart" then I would say yes some will have guns. Many try to use the argument of what they perceive the church's' stand on gun ownership. There is much evidence that many of our leaders have owned guns. Until the second coming, yes, I believe Zion and many members will have guns and perhaps asked to use them in our defense.

In Canada I can legally own a handgun under strict conditions. If I wish to take it to a gun range I must get a permit to move it To the range and Back. No side trips allowed. That is considerably different than the handgun laws in many states. Now back to the OP. Notice that ebay does not allow the sale of any guns.I suppose that KSL could institute the same policy. Does the Deseret News advertise cigarettes and alcohol? Those items are still legal to possess, correct?

Zion doesn't include violence! I don't think we would need protection from anyone, but i don't know for sure!

Yet Zions camp was initially a march to defend the Saints at gun point if necessary.

I agree, yet those outside of Zion might not agree. If a group of Saints (Zion) are attacked, do you advocate no defense?

Section 98 permits violenc and even the taking of life.

after some attempts of resolution as I recall. if Jesus comes again with a Pistol I will change my position! I honor those who fought and died in the military, I have a ton of relatives who fought to preserve our freedoms, some lived and some did not. Guns in the military is one thing but I just don't want to see any more Columbine, Norway or Aurora type of mass killings

But cigarettes and alcohol consumption is inherently immoral under LDS beliefs. Owning guns is not.

I hope I can go target shooting once in a while.

Confused you are. Guns you equate with violence. Guns can be used for violence but they can also be used for recreational target shooting. The difference is not in the gun but in the user.

Turn the other cheek!

As a believer in the 2nd amendment and a gun owner myself I still must admit to the appeal of turning the other cheek. The very courageous decision of the Anti-Nephi-Lehis rather than fight they chose to lay down and die at the hands of their enemies. That act converted many too. The Book of Mormon has a place for both pacifism, and protection with the use of deadly force.

Duncan I appreciate your participation in this thread. I think if ever in the situation I would defend my family with force, however if in a situation were it only myself I think I also could choose to die rather than actually kill someone. A position I hope never to be in.

My prayers go out to those families in Aurora.

That's alright if you have lots of cheeks.

According to some accounts there will come a time when peace will be maintained by a cordon band of the saints. It is OK to live by a philosophy of passivity as long as you have somebody willing to be the protectors.
