Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I know and that's fine but Canada has a different set of laws. For example handguns are all licensed and you can't own certain ones and you need permits and all kinds of legal stuff. They basically don't just hand them out to just anyone. Here is a question for anyone-will Zion have guns?Won't need them.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 wars are one thing and violence is anotherNot to the victims.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 My dad would shoot the squirrels that were destroying the trees, not good for the trees, not good for the squirrels as eventually they would lose home and at least one source of food.More accuracy makes for less animal suffering as well.My grandmother had a 410 shotgun she used on squirrels well into her 70's. You know how we backwoods Southerners are.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Jeff Holt:It is pretty easy with tritium sights.Politicians have been hammering away at gun laws since 1934. I am a very staunch defender of the Constitution and I firmly believe in the Second Amendment. Remember Nauvoo was asked to give up all their guns (before they were forced to Leave). The Church has a strong history of forming militias for the purpose of protecting its citizens, Joseph was even a General in Nauvoo. I am not so much a militia guy, but I will still defend the Bill of Rights and my family.Like I wrote in a previous post; Automatic weapons are very hard to get. They are classified as a category three weapon and not many outside of law enforcement can get them. Many semiautomatic weapons are made to look like machine guns and that is what most people are talking about. There is a vast difference between semiautomatic (one bullet per trigger pull) to holding in the trigger and the gun just spraying out bullets. There was not a single automatic weapon (machine gun) used at either Columbine or Aurora, yet the outcry to outlaw them always happen after tragedy like these.Automatic weapons are very hard to get. The shooters used Semi-auto (one bullet per trigger pull) that looked like automatic weapons.Sorry but even your tritium sights are of little to no value to target acquisition. Though they may be useful in sight alignment once the target is acquired. Further heavy smoke would render them all but useless.Actually it was long before then. Many locals including Tombstone; Arizona of the 19th Century had laws against carrying a gun inside the city limits.I'm neither a pro-gun nut nor an anti-gun nut. I am against having nuts behind the trigger. I legally and openly carried a S&W .44 mag for over a decade(which I still own, and keep under lock and key). It is perfectly safe in my hands, but I don't .believe everyone should have access to a firearm. Further I have oath sworn to support, and defend, the US Constitution many times in my life. Even as disabled as I now am I would not hesitate for a fraction of a second from doing so again. I am every bit as patriotic as you are, if not more so.I have nothing against regular militias formed by our governments. I have plenty against the gun nuts running around the woods pretending that they're somehow going to protect themselves against the Federal Government. If the Federal Government really wanted to take their gun away from them. They couldn't do a damn thing about it. Go ahead and try to protect yourself and your family from an F-22 armed with air to ground missiles.Yes; Joseph Smith was a General in the Nauvoo militia. His idea of being a General involved little more than putting a fancy uniform and strutting around like a Peacock on a horse. That takes nothing against him as the first Prophet of the Restoration, but a real General he was not(General Swarzkopf would have had Smith for lunch in less than 10 minutes of real fighting).Atomic and Thermonuclear weapons are legally impossible to get, by all but the Federal Government. Even then they are under highly restrictive control. More over it is illegal to publish/put on line/or otherwise distribute even a how-to-manual on how to make one. I know how to, but will not tell you.I know the difference between automatic and semiautomatic firearms. I've had training in and have handled/fired both. More over you(If you knew how) could change a semiautomatic AR-15 to a fully automatic M-16 in about 15-30 minutes. Again it is illegal to do so, and I won't tell you how to do it. While I'm no where near as fast as a fully automatic firearm. I am very fast and very accurate with firearms. There are really only three things that count in using any firearm; Shot placement, shot placement, and shot placement. On humans that is three buttons down.Over eighty percent of all firefights are over in less than 3 seconds. I can reload as fast or faster than anyone, given the same weapon. Of what legitimate interest does any private citizen in this country have for having 6000 rounds of ammo or a 100 round magazine?
ERayR Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Football, hockey, boxing...all pretty violent.Matter of fact I used to be covered in bruises from gymnastics.Fencing, ultimate fighting. As I get older I see less and less in boxing and wrestling.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 As to the need for semi-automatic firearms, well what about the need for an automobile that can go faster than the legal speed limit? Who needs that? Just a note...unless it is a revolver or bolt action, most guns are semi-auto.
Anijen Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I see that and agree with you and again as I have said people who live in the country or on farms on whatnot use guns for better purposes such as protecting livestock and farm uses rather then going into theatres and shooting up the placeOops, after reading my post it sounded like I live on a farm. I do not, but I have many friends who live on a farm. I will often take my kids to one of these farms (A doctor who used to live in our ward) and we go shooting his rats, and washing machines (targets on them), very fun day.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 ERayR:My two youngest sons are really into watching Ultimate Fighting. Me not so much.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Stargazer. The sole designed purpose of firearms is to kill things(They make terrible hammers). Automobiles while they can/do kill they are not purposely designed to do so. The ability of an automobile to attain freeways speeds quickly necessitates their ability to exceed the posted speed limit. You can't have the former without the latter. But I still don't advocate for violating the speed limit laws.

I also don't see why anyone needs those types of weapons. I am all for them being in museums or somewhere!
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 My dad was the inflight mechanic on a Mitchell Bomber during WW2. He made bombing runs over Italy. They didn't trust him with the guns so gave him the wrenches instead. PS. I long for the day when we will make no more war forever.
Anijen Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Sorry but even your tritium sights are of little to no value to target acquisition. Though they may be useful in sight alignment once the target is acquired. Further heavy smoke would render them all but useless. You may have a point, however if I understand the report correctly, it was not a complete dark theater, the shooter was in the front of the screen and people in the back rows could see him, and the movie was going.Actually it was long before then. Many locals including Tombstone; Arizona of the 19th Century had laws against carrying a gun inside the city limits. You have an excellent point. What happened there? it didn't turn out well with fatalities on both sides. Your point would have been better if you used Dodge City where gun control was used with better statistics.I'm neither a pro-gun nut nor an anti-gun nut. I am against having nuts behind the trigger. I legally and openly carried a S&W .44 mag for over a decade(which I still own, and keep under lock and key). I am every bit as patriotic as you are, if not more soNo arguments from me there, a little exception that you might be more patriotic. I grew up on Army bases, my dad (a real hero), raised us to be very patriotic..Yes; Joseph Smith was a General in the Nauvoo militia. His idea of being a General involved little more than putting a fancy uniform and strutting around like a Peacock on a horse. That takes nothing against him as the first Prophet of the Restoration, but a real General he was not(General Swarzkopf would have had Smith for lunch in less than 10 minutes of real fighting).I agree totally (my point being he had organized a militia and did not believe in taking gun rights away from them)Atomic and Thermonuclear weapons are legally impossible to get, by all but the Federal Government. Even then they are under highly restrictive control. More over it is illegal to publish/put on line/or otherwise distribute even a how-to-manual on how to make one. I know how to, but will not tell you? Where did that come from? I agree with you here too. I have no idea how to make any type of explosive and I do not want to know..I know the difference between automatic and semiautomatic firearms. I've had training in and have handled/fired both. More over you(If you knew how) could change a semiautomatic AR-15 to a fully automatic M-16 in about 15-30 minutes. Again it is illegal to do so, and I won't tell you how to do it. There are really only three things that count in using any firearm; Shot placement, shot placement, and shot placement. On humans that is three buttons down.No argument from me there either. FYI I do not know how to convert any gun to fully automatic.Over eighty percent of all firefights are over in less than 3 seconds. I can reload as fast or faster than anyone, given the same weapon.I would like to know your source on that stat, not that I don't trust you, I completely do. When stats are given in posts I just appreciate the source. Another thing is stats can be made to portray one side as easy as it can portray the other side.Of what legitimate interest does any private citizen in this country have for having 6000 rounds of ammo or a 100 round magazine? For fun, target practice. As you well know since you told me how proficient you are with guns. When training and plinking (target shooting) it is very easy to go through literally hundreds of rounds in one day of training, imagine what you would go through if you trained for a week or more, or if you went plinking just two weekends a month. As far as a 100 round magazine I agree but probably for a different reason than you do. The more ammo the clip or magazine holds the faster you go through it and the costs build up. I have a clip that hold ten rounds for my Rugar 10/22 which is perfect for target shooting. I also have 1 clip that holds 25 rounds but I have never used it because I know I would burn through the ammo too quick (saving costs and still having the equal amount of fun). All in all it would seem from your post we agree on guns more than we disagree.

It is violent and does not have even one redeeming aspect. I see no reason for it.

The reason as I understand it why this cousin became a machine gunner was somehow and I don't know how but he got into the military as he was somewhat deaf and so firing a machine gun all day didn't affect him as much as the other chaps. They gave him the nickname "Buzz" because he could feel the vibrations from the gun. he could obviously still communicate to others , I haven't ever met him personally though.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 You'd get a pretty good feel for that generation by reading Tom Bockaw's "The Greatest Generation".
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Only for those who have made covenants....though I feel like cigarettes are inherently stupid.Great comment...the WoW is. Covenant, it does not apply to those not under it. The Jews can't eat bacon and ham, that does not make it immoral for us to do so.
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 YUUUMMM Bacon.I can eat it by the pound. it is my favorite meat
Anijen Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Just an FYI from personal experience I have had three good friends who were killed by a gun. One was a police officer in the Marshall Islands, who I baptized, they do not carry guns on the the whole island, it is illegal for anyone to own a gun there (this happened while on my mission). My 1st counselor when I was in the EQP was shot and killed, and lastly my uncle was shot and killed while working at a dept store. All three were in areas where no guns were allowed, all three were killed by people who acquired their guns by illegal means. I can empathize 100% with the victims, yet I know it is not the gun or gun laws that did not kill or protect them. I place the blame on the shooters.

Criminals will always find a way to get them, which would leave law abiding people defenseless.Since it is illegal for anyone to own a fire arm in the Marshall's not even the police have them. The police do have truncheon clubs. This brother was killed in home with missionaries and his family present. The Elders placed his body in the back of a truck and drove him around to the other end of the atoll (about thirty miles) where the hospital was, by the time they arrived he had passed away. One Elder was allowed a six month extension because the Republic of the Marshalls needed one of the Elders to be a witness at the shooters trial.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 For the record I legally killed a man. He was pointing a .357 magnum at me. He is the only one whom has any responsibility for his own death.
Duncan Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 FYI There isn't anyone on this thread that I wouldn't have over to dinner, I can't guarantee a righteous dinner, but you are all most welcome!
Bill “Papa” Lee Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 For the record I legally killed a man. He was pointing a .357 magnum at me. He is the only one whom has any responsibility for his own death.Thankfully you could defend yourself. I one had a .38 pressed to my forehead and had nothing to defend myself. Once on a construction site, I got caught up in a gunfight between a gang and the guy they stole a car from. Another time I had to disarm someone while working on police force. At night a few times heard gunfights. Some houses we would inspect we had to call SWAT to get the people out.
thesometimesaint Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Pa Pa:I believe in self defense. I just don't believe that any civilian needs 6000 rounds and hundred round magazines to do it. Not sure if any law enforcement official needs that either. I can usually talk my way out of violent situations before they start. So have had little use for firearms of any type, but that doesn't mean I don't know how/when to use them.
