military and the police-ideally but again I know that in practice you'll have the criminal element and people snapping and taking lives-but long story short I don't want more gun violence or any violence and we learn nothing from past horrific experiences. I just wonder how long and how many more lives will be lost until we learn

Duncan you seem to be hiding your head in the sand. How are military and police going to prevent "the criminal element and people snapping and taking lives" from occurring. These horrendous occurrences that bring on this hand wringing and calls for gun control are not perpetrated by the people that are targeted by gun laws.

Just what is it you think we should have learned from these past horrific experiences?

much, much, much stricter gun laws!!!! Don't have automatic weapons in the hands of anyone-why does anyone need them , again, is beyond me. I think the States should have an national gun law that every state abides by-not a piece meal state-by-state thing

by the way you're implying I am an Ostrich-which you know that it is a myth that they put their heads in the sand or ground

I inadvertently gave you a rep point but you can keep it. :)

Lets go back over this again. Strict gun laws do not keep guns out of the hands of those you are trying to disarm. They do not obey laws anyway. It only disarms the law abiding citizen and gives the ones who should be disarmed a five or six minute window (at minimum) to accomplish their deed. One sane, armed citizen in these situations can and has mitigated the outcome considerably. I don't think the Colorado shooter would have stopped shooting if someone had yelled out to him "hold on I have called the police, they're on the way".

Yes I know it is a myth but it still brings up a vivid picture doesn't it?

Will not keep guns out of the hands of criminals, but will out of the hands of honest people.

Already there, automatic weapons are not in the hands of just "anyone." Automatic weapons are very regulated and are extremely hard to get.
-why does anyone need them , again, is beyond me
Automatic weapons are used for police work and military. They need them to defend our country [military] and our laws [police]. The Second Amendment was strictly made for citizens the right to bear arms not for hunting or target shooting but for protection from tyranny. The Supreme Court is clear that the Second Amendment is the right to bear arms for ordinary citizens for militia. A militia can defend the country best when it has the best weapon.

I think people disrespect our countries founding fathers and spit on the graves of those who died for these freedoms.

Many people do not undertand the difference between automatic and semi-automatic firearms. Perhaps Duncan is also confused on this?

Papa I love you man, but that is selfish. Do you think he wants to come home? Your Elders Quorum will help him. I was on my own since I was barely 16 years old. When I went on my mission I had enough for about a year. My Bishop told me not to worry and let the ward and the Elders Quorum help, and when I get back if I feel still inclined then just donate back to the mission fund.

I see your's and Calmoriah's point...I am good at being charitable, just not good at accepting it. too prideful I guess.

When grandpa was a young boy he was enamored with all of the newfangled electric devices for the home. After his siblings talked about getting an electric stove or electric washer for g-grandma he piped up and said "Let's get mom an electric chair!" (as related by my aunts and uncles)

most guns in these time are semiauto...Only three of my log guns are not. All of my handguns are semiauto. I sold my revolver because it had no safety.

Target shooting is a lot of fun. Semiauto just means you can fire without reloading so much.

Sorry Papa that is not the definition, you don't have to reload so much with a single shot either, you will have to recock each time but many guns have the capacity to hold more than one bullet at a time (unless you are shooting the old muskets).

Semi-auto means; you will get one bullet shot out for each trigger pull. A fully automatic is you hold the trigger in and it will spray out bullets at a very high rate of speed, such as a machine gun.

Like ERayR and myself has mentioned people get mixed up. between a semiautomatic and fully automatic.

This is a semiautomatic 22 (I own this type)

This is the same 22 but with aesthetic looking additions. It shoots exactly the same as the above 22

I am hoping automatic weapons are illegal to the genral consumer????!! I am just wondering how to beat that into a plowshare or a pruninghook

He didn't that was the best part. He thought an electric chair was some kind of novel new invention that his mother would enjoy.

One reason many airguns, 22's and other guns are dressed up to look like fully automatic is because automatic are that hard to acquire. Another reason they are modded up are for the functions they preform. Many people argue why would anyone need something like that well let me tell you. Vermin etc. If I am out on a farm and the hen house is having a huge problem with rats the best way to get rid of the problem is to shoot them and the best way to do that is at night so you need to put night vision on and also a suppressor to make the barrel flash and the sound minimum. If you do not use these the rats will scatter and you will shoot one but that will be the extent of your shooting if you have the suppressor and night vision you can pick them off without them being scared off.

If we are ever over run by an enemy the additions to these guns are considered combat multipliers and can give one the advantage and can save a life.

The Second Amendment was not originally made for hunting or target practice it was was the second of the bill of rights for the purpose of defending this country from oppressors. It gives every citizen the right to bear arms. When this amendment is taken away then I guarantee the criminals will have guns and the defenders will not and this country will have an even worse gun violence problem. If gun control is made more stricter we will find it will not stop the Columbines, Auroras or any other shooting because criminals will still be able to get guns, while you and I will not be able to.

Why don't we just allow the govt to takeaway all our rights?

Last time I looked they were but there are certain people still getting them and not from legal sources. To get one of these you have to go to someone who knows someone else who just happens to know where to get them. The US military has them in very large numbers and a lot of them get lost. Gun laws don't help here.

I see your point and do not intend to be offensive. I think there is great wisdom in choosing not to have a gun if you do not desire one. I think one is blessed more when turning the other cheek rather than acting out revenge. I think actively starting wars is evil. I think the only wars we should be in our the ones were we were attacked first or are seriously threatened by other means.

But I believe there is nothing wrong in being prepared and I can persuasively argue that point from the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. There is nothing wrong in fighting for your beliefs. I am impressed by how Wikipedia defines the Title of Liberty;

the Title of Liberty as a call to arms for his people to defend their country, family and religion.

I believe the best preparation is and does act as a deterrent and when it does not the best type of weapon to have are the best weapons legally available. Captain Moroni knew this concept and prepared the best armor and weapons for his people.

A single shot requires reload after each shoot...you are speaking to revolvers, bolt action and lever action.

Who is acting surprised? Not me. There will be criminals doing horrible acts of violence with or without stricter gun laws. There have been many incidents were those who could carry a firearm have prevented the killing of another person or many persons. Those incidents are rarely mentioned in the news. But regardless of whatever gun law out there there will be nuts out there who will kill and stricter gun laws will not stop them, but it will stop someone from protecting others.

No, I was correcting you. You said;
Semiauto just means you can fire without reloading so much
That is not what semi-auto means.

I interpret reload as taking out the empty clip or opening up the chamber then putting more bullets into the clip or magazine and then putting said clip back into the gun.

You do not have to do that for every single bullet. If you recock your gun because you just shot,, that is not reloading. You might call it rechamber or cocking although it does not mean that type of gun is a semiautomatic.

Simply put a semi-automatic shoots one bullet per pull of the trigger (without rechambering).

A fully automatic is one trigger pulled and held and it sprays out bullets at a very high rate of speed.

Semiauto means it hold more rounds and you can pull the trigger as fast as you like...at least that is I thought I was implying. When I was a boy I had two "single shots" which meant every time I fired I had to reload another round.
