Byu Won'T Let Me Pick Up An A N E Minor Because I'Ve Graduated

From my experience in looking at resumes, I have never cared about majors or minors; they are irrelevant and do not speak to the abilities of the individual. It is no more difficult to get a minor than not to, other than demonstrating the organizational skills of a 12 year old to take the right courses. In business, I look for a degree in marketing, business, or other related studies. An arts degree is only a value is I have 10 candidates of equal value and one of them has a degree. The type degree under these circumstances is irrelevant. People who note their minors on their resume generally have a poor resume and are desperately trying to find filler.

If I find a candidate with multiple minors, I see it as a person who spent too much time at school and didn't buckle down to get the education done and over-with to get on with actual practical experience.

I have been told so many times that a person with a degree demonstrates determination and discipline. In 20 years of business, I have found this to be completely false. There is no correlation between the two. University is a cakewalk compared to the actual work environment. It requires a short attention span and little commitment. You take a course for 3 months and never look back, you get to pick courses that appeal to you, and you can take as long as you with to complete the degree. In the real world you have to stick with a difficult challenge for years, you do not get to pick your challenges, and if you take too long you get fired.

Of course, there are occupations that require a specific degree but again, the minor is rarely of value. One of the few exceptions to this might be teaching. Having a degree in math with a minor in french or chemistry would be of tremendous value. If you are hoping to get a job as an office manager, having a degree in math, with minors in french, chemistry, history, religion, drama and political science would be a huge barrier to getting hired.
