How an apostle foretold the future...

I can only add my resounding Amen.

He certainly got it right, including the mocking of traditional values. I think that some of the critics of the lds church now can see themselves in this talk. He foretold the future.

The video will show elder maxwell speaking about the future. And he seems to have gotten it right for 2011.

Matt 24

(10)And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. (11)And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people. (12)Sin will be rampant everywhere, and the love of many will grow cold.

2 Timothy 3

"You should know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. (2)For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. (3)They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control. They will be cruel and hate what is good. (4)They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. (5)They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!"

What Maxwell is speaking of was foretold by Jesus and the apostles long before 1978.

Nothing surprising in his message, but I can't see how people are any less free to live their religion (whatever it might be) or vote their convictions (whatever their origin) in 2011 than in 1978 (or 1908 or 1798).

But the background music! Ugh!

In its mildest form, irreligion will merely be condescending toward those who hold to traditional Judeo-Christian values.

It's interesting to hear how we're viewed by others....

In the job market, just look at Foxtrot44's posts on hiring Mormons in the science field. Economy/money is the weapon, look at the SSM witch hunt for those who dared to support prop 8.

As to prediction, religion has generally been on a 10,000 year retreat from rationalism. This process has speed up since the enlightenment. In virtually every arena where rationalistic, scientific views and religious dogma clash, religion loses out. To predict that rationalism will continue to gain on religion does not take a prophet. In fact, some might argue that America has taken a few steps back from rationalism since 78.

I think John that Neal A. Maxwell gave a pretty good outline of the world today, especially in the United States and in Europe. And as we can see from the prop. 8, the idea of what a family is has suffered greatly. There does seem to be some confusion on the issue. And the mocking of critics of the judeo/christian tradition has certainly increased.

(11)"And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people", He knew Joseph Smith would try this...but true followers of Jesus who understand the word know that the last prophet was Jesus. Maxwell is one of those false prophets trying to take credit for something Jesus foretold. Why do some people insist on believing otherwise is simply very sad.

Whenever I see this argument used, I worry about our educational system. It only takes some elementary logic to see that it is untenable. The only way we could know that Jesus is the last prophet is if a prophet said so. There is no record of any prophet making that claim. Therefore, it cannot be shown that Jesus is the last prophet. Further, if Jesus was the last prophet, nothing in the New Testament except direct quotes from Him constitutes Scripture.

A claim that Jesus was the last prophet is a claim that is not found in the scriptures. If Jesus were the last prophet, then what of Agabus?

So, here it is: call for references.

Oh, and by the way, "And many false prophets will appear and will deceive many people" does not answer the CFR. For if there were to be no prophets after Jesus, then referring to "false" prophets would be oxymoronic. If there were to be no more, then a simple declaration to this effect would be sufficient, then none could be deceived! The existence of false prophets implies quite clearly the existence of true prophets.

Elder Maxwell was either a madman, a vile deceiver or exactly what he claimed to be: a chosen witness, an authorized personal representative, a duly ordained Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Brethren, as you submit your wills to God, you are giving Him the only thing you can actually give Him that is really yours to give. Don

If a man claims to be a prophet and he isn't, then he is a false prophet (whether or not there are true prophets).

You need a lesson in logic.

You are assuming a bi-conditional relationship between the existence of a true prophet and a false prophet.

If you accept the following premise as true,

true prophet exists ---> false prophet exists

you cannot automatically accept its converse

false prophet exists ---> true prophet exists

as true.

Here's an example.

A dog is an animal that has a tail.

Is the converse true?

An animal with a tail is a dog.

No.

To illustrate my point, I will ask if there were false prophets before Joseph Smith was born? If so, then by your reasoning there must have been true prophets. Who were they, and wouldn't their existence render unnecessary the restoration?

If there were to be no more, then a simple declaration to this effect would be sufficient, then none could be deceived!

Do you believe that that every word that Jesus uttered is recorded in the New Testament?

Actually, Neal A. Maxwell is not trying to take credit for anything. He just made a prediction that came true. Nothing more. Since he is now passed on, he can't take credit for anything.

Was Paul a prophet or an apostle? It would seem that he was both. And what was Joseph Smith trying to do? I think that mormons live a pretty good christian life. I certainly see nothing wrong with mormon behavior. It is certainly not satanic. Is your pastor a false prophet? Or a false leader? Could those verses in the bible be directed at him or her?

How do you know who is a false prophet? Is your pastor a false leader, leading his or her flock away? Some would say yes, and some would say no. How do we know that those are the exact words Jesus used that are recorded in the new testament? The writers of the new testament must have had wonderful memories if you say that those words are his exact words.

If Jesus was the last Prophet then it is his fault that so many believe so differently and why so many disbelieve

It is just as illogical to presume the warning against false prophets means that there are no prophets.

I never made that claim.

In fact I was careful to point out that there may or may not be true prophets.

John F Kennedy is in it? I mean really, that man has more women than Brigham Young, only without the commitment of marriage.

Thanks for the instructional material.

Maybe my logic is not rigorously correct. But the point of the matter is simply this: If the principle were that there would be no prophets after Jesus, then the most economical method of proclaiming this would be to state that there would be no more prophets. That false prophets would arise might or might not presuppose that there had to be true prophets, but in fact, this is what happened. I mentioned Agabus, who definitely was a true prophet, and who definitely came after Jesus. Therefore, to state that false prophets would arise is, along with the evidence of Agabus, that there would be true prophets also. How many? Not for me to say. And if John the Beloved and his Revelation was not a work of prophecy, making him a prophet also, there we have at least two. In fact, each member of the 12 was a prophet. In fact John did tarry in the flesh (along with the Three Nephites), so there were at least four prophets who were in world from that day until the present.

To illustrate my point, I will ask if there were false prophets before Joseph Smith was born? If so, then by your reasoning there must have been true prophets. Who were they, and wouldn't their existence render unnecessary the restoration?

Agabus came before Joseph Smith. He did not restore the Gospel (the Church having not at that time gone into apostasy). And besides, there isn't any necessity for any prophets who might be called between the Apostasy and the Restoration to restore the Gospel and/or the Church. The Book of Mormon, wherein Jesus states that the BoM people are the other sheep as mentioned in John's gospel, He also says that there were likewise others, extra-BoM peoples, who had prophets and He would visit. Presumably they had their own prophets as well, and presumably also 12 disciples.

Do you believe that that every word that Jesus uttered is recorded in the New Testament?

If so, then He was a man of very few words.

In fact, John himself records that he said lots and lots.

This last question of yours is to me somewhat of a non-sequitor. Where would you be going with this?
