Popular Post Bernard Gui Posted July 24, 2024 Popular Post Posted July 24, 2024 (edited) Our ward choir singing from the new hymn book….😬 Edited July 25, 2024 by Bernard Gui 10
MustardSeed Posted July 25, 2024 Posted July 25, 2024 Unreal. I have never heard this level of skill from a ward choir in all my life. Well done. 2

Bernard Gui Posted July 27, 2024 Author Posted July 27, 2024 (edited) OK, that’s not our ward choir. It’s an Irish Sacred Harp choir singing American shape note hymns. I thought some might smoke it. A version of Come Thou Fount is in the Sacred Harp hymn book. Shape note singing groups are forming…probably there’s one near you. https://fasola.org Edited July 27, 2024 by Bernard Gui 1

MiserereNobis Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 On of my professors was involved in the Sacred Harp music in the movie Cold Mountain. (doesn't mean anything really except that I knew someone cool) 2

I've bookmarked this page so that it's perpetually only a click away. What amazing times we live in, it's almost like communion with God is just a click away. Edited July 28, 2024 by manol 1
blackstrap Posted July 28, 2024 Posted July 28, 2024 This was our ward's closing hymn today. Compared to the OP we may not have been quite as good . 😁 1

It’s not our ward choir. It’s a Sacred Harp/shape-note group. This is how they sing. Most ward choirs won’t sound like the BYU group that popularized the hymn. Edited July 29, 2024 by Bernard Gui 2

A couple of fellows there wrote papers on shape-note writing and singing. Interesting topic. There are Sacred Harp singing groups all around. I’m thinking of going to the one in Lexington. I imagine the singing sound of our early church members and pioneers would be very similar to that in the video in the OP and here: Edited July 30, 2024 by Bernard Gui 1

I think it would catch on in Utah with the music interest here…though maybe people are too busy these days with pickleball (the courts are springing up everywhere, but I can’t bring myself to be interested because of the name as I don’t like pickles generally and despise a few version, lol). 1

You might want to edit the original post with a little note at the bottom identifying the actual singers as it appears to be confusing people more than the humor coming across.

That’s what the 😬 is for. Plus, it catches the attention when it’s a bit opaque.

I love pickles.
