“In 2018, the Mormon or LDS Church announced a course correction to stress the full name that mentions the Savior.”

First contestant:

Quote

“What is The Church of Latter-day Saints?”

That is hilarious that the guy totally left out the "Savior" part from the clue.

“What is The Church of Latter-day Saints of Jesus Christ?” the second contestant said.

Is our name really that foreign to people?

Well it is pretty wordy for regular conversation.
Which is why I doubt we'll see the end of "the Mormons" any time soon.

The world will do what it wants. But I think the faithful among our own people are gradually getting President Nelson’s message that the directive is “non-negotiable.”

And the “Jeopardy” episode indicates at least some in the world are paying attention.

In a highly competitive environment, it’s easy to make dumb mistakes in the pressure of the moment.

At least until the next Prophet changes direction.

I know, but it is still funny.

Honestly, yes. People just know you as the Mormons.

I guess we can't fault them for that.

Yep.

And as I have said before, I thought Mormons worshipped American Indian Saints.

One family lived next door and we would not raise any questions lest they push us, trying to join their weird cult.

In my experience, yes. Hardly any non members I have met over the years equate Mormons with the actual name of the Church.

Largely our own fault.

But it’s a new day. Outsiders cannot be faulted for not knowing. Professing members on the other hand?

My hunch is that much of the apostasy that occurred in the Church in the wake of the discontinuance of the practice of plural marriage came about because too many members expected that the “next prophet” would “change direction.”

I think yes, it is "really that foreign."  Two big reasons for this, I think.  First, we went by "the Mormons" for a very long time.  Think of all the Church's public service TV spots in the 80s that signed off with "From the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons."  I support Pres. Nelson's call for us to use the name of the Church, but it will take a very long time (and will likely never be wholly successful).

Second, the full name of the Church is comparatively long and unwieldy.  "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" versus "The Mormon Church" or "The LDS Church."

Rhode Island's formal name was, until 2020, "State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."  The USSR was often just referred to as "Russia" during the Cold War.  James Maitland Stewart apparently hated being called "Jimmy," but we all did it, and do it now (he, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck are my favorite actors).  The United States is a constitutional federal republic, but is often referred to as a "democracy."  Sometimes nicknames, diminutive forms, etc. just end up sticking, even if they are inaccurate or unliked.

Thanks,

-Smac

We’ve been given standing approval to shorten the name in casual discourse to “the Church of Jesus Christ,” or, when the context is clear, simply “the Church.”

Actually most of that particular apostasy came as a result of the double talk of the general authorities of the day.  They even confused each other for nearly 30 years.

There was plenty of it attributable to a refusal to accept new revelation.

The earlier apostate groups emerging from the Utah period of Church history had polygamy as a central tenet.

Members just don't get how obscure we are!

Ok, right now, without looking anything up, everyone tell me about the beliefs of the "Moravians".

Without research, off the top of your heads, tell me what they believe.

THAT is about how much folks know about Mormons!

Because the general authorities from 1890 to at least 1904, maybe longer, were speaking out both sides of their mouths on this issue.

Is it any wonder then that these early apostate groups believed they'd been given permission/authority?

The Church created fundamentalists.  It's absolutely naive to state they came about in rebellion to revelation.

I couldn’t do it; I doubt the average person could. Which makes it not a good comparison. The contestants on “Jeopardy!” knew at least enough to take a stab at the clue. I doubt they could have done that much if the clue had been about Moravians.

Assuming arguendo that the above is true, how is it applicable to the point at hand? Can you name EVEN ONE high leader of the Church who is at odds with President Nelson on referring to the Church by its proper name?

You toss off casually that “the next prophet” will change direction. The next two men in line for the presidency of the Church are President Dallin H. Oaks and President M. Russell Ballard. President Oaks is President Nelson’s counselor and by all indications supports him on the matter of the name of the Church. And I don’t know anyone who has given more general conference talks than President Ballard on calling Christ’s Church after His name.

Hey Scott, what is the surest predictor of future behavior?

If President Nelson can do an about face on President Monson's Mormon emphasis then a future about face is completely possible.

After all, those same brethren you list above were general authorities under President Monson too.

And you're the one comparing it to the slow removal of plural marriage.   I'm merely pointing out our leaders are only united as long as the current Prophet calls the shots.

This is true.  It going to be hard to unwind a 170 years of the church and members referring to themselves as Mormons.  The I am a mormon campaign also got the mormon name in front of a lot of people.
