I'm gun agnostic. I could support some careful regulation if we'd first try what we haven't.  I think we should stop rewarding shooters with years of loud press (pol PR, etc) about their accomplishment.  I believe what we started with Columbine (massively amp'd coverage, endless media memorials) is siren-calling future shooters.

If a sufficient period of reduced, quiet coverage doesn't move the needle, I would support regulation. I think that might shift us back to increased bombings. However, the 1970s showed the FBI can sharply reduce those attacks[1].

[1] The 1970s FBI reduced bombings, once they abandoned surveilling Americans (not suspected of a crime) in favor of actual police work.

At least the 1970s bombings generally targeted property and not people. They went after prominent targets but usually had the bombs go off at night. People are generally more blasé about property damage than the loss of human life.

Or maybe that is what changed as I have seen people go into near-histrionics because a Wendy’s burned down but seem uninterested in a body count.

We didn't use to hear about flight attendants being attached either.  I'm thinking these escalations are an artifact from a two year lock down.  Humans are social animals, and something like this has to be taking a toll.

We did. News started featuring them after 2001. I'd agree there seems to be an uptick.

The agitators are typically lashing out over wearing a mask in a pressurized tube of recycled air. That seems to indicate people expressing their anti-mask tribalism more than succumbing to pandemic fatigue. It's possible the latter could make one even more susceptible to suffering the former but that's pure speculation on my part.

Teachers and principals have been in the news saying that they have had to deal with a huge increase of aggression in students and parents as well.  Some have called it unprecedented.  One school administer said that if he ruled the world they would stop teaching academic classes for a year and instead have classes on conflict resolution, communication, mental health, etc.

We are unraveling as a society, and justifying our bad actions as it burns down around us.

I don't care what you think of masks, the agitators are idiots.

I'd imagine much of this is transference of their parents' aggression.

Definitely.  They are watching how their parents are responding to disagreement and copying it.

I remember them happening before then, but my dad worked for the airlines and the attendants were very nice to us kids usually when we flew, even if Dad wasn’t around to impress, so I may be inflating what I heard about verbal conflicts into physical attacks. Not like the airlines wanted to make a big deal of them, bad for PR.

I totally agree.  Aggression is up.  I am seeing it on the freeway and while shopping.

Another good reason to stay home then…

Tell me about it.  Every third pickup is decorated similarly here.  Christ has been thoroughly supplanted.

I'm getting tired of saying "She isn't wrong".

I never thought I would be nostalgic for the “honk if you love Jesus” bumperstickers.

In what has long been a deep southern Christian climate, political expressions have overtaken ones of faith. More recently, overt political animosity is overtaking everything.

In reaction to these increases, the Church has been advocating that we lose ourselves in service, recommit to our neighbors and allow Christ into our lives in a way that social hostility can't overly wound us. After much reflection, I think it may be the best possible way to handle it.

I agree.  I stay home as much as possible.  I do miss being normal.

You poor guys. It is so much easier when it is your normal. :)

It's nothing new, just a turn of the leaf. During Trump's reign, in Washington state where I was living, the bumper stickers were all directed at Trump. And then there was every Hollywood actor trying to virtue signal by copying Robert de Niro's famous two-word deep and insightful 2018 Tony Awards speech, with all the like-minded giving him a standing ovation for those two words. Which you can look up if you like, I won't link to it here. Now we got the other side of the coin, and it's all hateful, vulgar, and disgusting.

An attorney who makes videos about law issues and posts them on YouTube, has chimed in on this.

Agreed.  Hateful, vulgar and disgusting.  I dislike where our society is heading.  I am especially worried about the hate that is being generated.  It has spilled out into violence.

Indeed. For some time, being unattached was one of the quintessential characteristics of flight attendants. ;)
