President Nelson -- "Unleashed"

A few weeks ago, Sister Nelson did an interview and described President Nelson as being "unleashed". And based on the changes that have come down since he took over, I have to wonder if:

a. he had in mind all these years as an apostle what he would do if he were the prophet but never spoke up.

b. he had tried unsuccessfully to get some of these things implemented over the years.

c. he has just recently had an influx of revelation and inspiration resulting in so many changes.

d. many of these things were in the works for some time and are just coming to fruition now.

I support all the changes; these are just thoughts that occurred to me.

P.S. I wish the groupings for the youth would be based on school year and not calendar year. It seems a more natural grouping to me (grouped by school grade rather than date of birth). It always seems a little awkward to mix 7th graders with 8th graders. But maybe it won't be a big deal.

I put my answer to all this on a previous post, basically, he is not the first President of the Church to do this but for all we know the Lord was guiding him to when he became the Prophet to implement all this stuff. Sometimes, certain things are not the right time for example, the Church dedicated one Temple from 1927 to 1945, clearly they had other priorities that took centre stage and the Lord called Pres. Heber J. Grant and Pres. George Albert Smith to handle what was coming. That isn't to say that Temples were important but other things took priority.

I would wonder if President Monson's health had been better the last several years if many of these changes would not have been made then.  The 12 are very respectful of the Prophet and look for his approval in all things.  But with health concerns I imagine that there were changes that people could see needed to be made, or were ready to be made, but because of the decrease in the amount of work that President Monson could undertake could not be made. 

The youth program, which is slated to start in 2020, has been in development for several years.  So fruition on this one.

All of these things are probably true though from what someone told us in our ward a few weeks ago who works at the church office building that issue C may particularly be at play but I am hesitant to go further with what was said here.

As I have written elsewhere recently, Elder Bednar was with us almost four years ago for a regional priesthood leadership training meeting in which he foreshadowed many of these changes. He said we had just finished laying the foundation of the Restoration and now needed to begin building the truly global Church that would rest on that foundation. He warned us that the emerging Church would be unrecognisable to us and emphasised the need therefore to be converted to something more substantial than tradition or culture or programs.

I've also noted that speakers who discussed changes in the most recent General Conference said that these changes have been in the works for many years now. I believe them. It has been my experience that the Church rushes nothing. (One of the prime benefits of being led by living prophets is their capacity to receive revelation and begin making preparations many years in advance -- often before they even grasp where things are headed, I suspect.)

If you look at the first pages of the Come, Follow Me manual that we just received, you can see that it received final approval in February 2017, almost two years ago now.

The world is not America. Many nations around the world have academic years that align with the calendar year. I can't find an exhaustive list, but from what I was able to Google just now, it appears we may in fact be in the majority.

The Jewish New Year begins each Sept-Oct, while the pagan Roman year begins Jan 1.  Western society mixes both, partly due to our pagan Roman heritage, and partly to make school-age children available for agricultural harvest times.

Scholar Eric Werner found that the Jewish liturgy for New Year and High Holy Days was transferred by later Christians to the pagan time of Saturnalia and Yuletide on the Winter Solstice -- and renamed "Christmas."  The old Christian Jewish Christmas was therefore celebrated at Jewish New Year, just as the old Jewish Christian Easter was always celebrated at Jewish Passover.  When the Christian Church was no longer Jewish, the Greek and Roman Christian Church shifted both holidays to a different time.

It's almost hard to think that Pres. Nelson hasn't even been prophet for an entire year yet. There have been a LOT of changes. I know people argue about the significance of the changes, whether or not they are simply administrative or not, but I don't think it can be disputed that there have been a LOT of changes in 2018.

So we can say Pres. Nelson has been "unleashed" and argue about whether or not that is a good thing. One thing's clear, it's been a whirlwind of a 2018 and I don't expect it to stop any time soon.

So has the "Come Follow Me" program. The copyright date on the manual "Come Follow Me -- for Individuals and Familes," for example, is 2017. And it has been piloted in parts of the Church.
