Houses of worship should be safe, inviolate places for people of all faiths to join in sacred fellowship and seek communion with God.”

Which is why I deplore the action of commandeering the pulpit in fast and testimony meeting to push one’s personal cause or political bent.

@Scott Lloyd is banned from the thread for off topic comments that are completely inappropriate for a condolences thread.

I have a Facebook friend who regularly attends LDS services on Testimony Sunday to proclaim the "true gospel of Grace". He's had mics switched off, been asked to step away from the podium, and is reminded if he shows up at certain ward buildings that as a non-member he is not welcome to approach the pulpit. He's a radio host,  howevet, and travels enough that he's always able to find a ward which isn't expecting him.

My prayers are with the victims of the dastardly atack on Saturday.

I was kind of surprised to read that there were 3 congregations in the building at the time. Sounded a lot like another Church I know...

I really don't understand anti-semitism. All the Jews I have known have always been extremely pleasant people. Perhaps some people(ie Neo-Nazis) are just irrationally jealous. I have put the synagogue and families affected in our prayers.

We condemn the environment of hate-filled rhetoric that has become so prevalent. Anti-Semitism has no place in our society. It is the responsibility of good people everywhere to speak out and stand up for each other’s rights to worship and live peacefully.”.................................

This is the part of that statement which I find most germane.  Intolerance has become the new normal in some circles in America, and seems to be infecting much of the world.  I am so glad that we do not hear invective and hatred from Pres Nelson -- just the opposite.

What if one of the Three Nephites showed up uninvited on a Fast Sunday?  Would the constabulary be called to expel him?

We used to joke that, if Jesus showed up on BYU campus in beard, robe, and sandals, that he would immediately be arrested and placed under observation at the State Mental Hospital at the end of Center St in Provo.  He would get a very sympathetic ear for his delusion that he is Jesus.  They've met and humored guys like that before.

What's your Facebook friend's name?

I doubt one of the three Nephites would hold forth with false doctrine or otherwise inappropriate discourse from the pulpit.

Edited to add: And when Jesus comes again, it will be in glory, and there will be no question who He is.

You just commandeered this thread about shooting victims to make it about your personal hobby horse/grudge.

We just had a training in our stake on dealing with an active shooter in a chapel. Tons of fun.

I wonder if this might change the Church's policy on members carrying guns in the building.....

I hope not. Some yahoo with a gun is more likely to accidentally shoot someone than save the day.

I tend to agree! And my ward is full of yahoos!

I'm interested - who is 'we'?  My bishopric just read the security policy in ward council, and then some folks disparaged CCP holders, then they moved to the next topic.  What did you folks do?

Did the training involve the Run-Hide-Fight methodology?  I'm a fan, in that it's much, much better than nothing.  But it only works if, you know, the training actually makes it to the ward members.

On any occasion when some deraanged killer goes off, I would hope there would be one or more yahoos present. I hate the idea of being a sitting duck or having any of my loved ones in that position.

I didn’t commandeer anything. No one — not even you — was obliged to react to my passing comment.

Random yahoo ward members with a gun?  I hesitate to be enthusiastic at the notion.

Conceal carry permit holding yahoo ward members with a gun?  I am supportive.  They tend to have lower rates of criminal behavior or accidents than the general population.  Depending on the study, they even commit crimes at lower rates than police officers.

Here in Utah, and probably elsewhere as well, one is required to undergo training prior to receiving a CCP.

To clarify, the prospect of some non-permitted yahoo showing up with a gun, who does not have a permit, yet he has a gun, and brings it concealed?  I hesitate to be enthusiastic.

CCP holding yahoos showing up with a gun? I am supportive.  Because if you take a random yahoo, and you get them a CCP, their rates of crime and accidents go down when compared with the non-CCP holders in their same demographic.  Scott mentions one obvious reason why.  There are probably others, although harder to study.

Anyone commandeering a sacrament meeting can make the same defense. But maybe a thread about victims of anti-Semitic violence should be about just that and not about your pet peeve lists.

There was a meeting for all members of the Ward Council. They talked about how to react. When to run, how to hide, how to fight, how to chuck hymnbooks at them if you have nothing else, and an amusing and unrealistic description of yanking someones eyeball out. We have discussed active shooter instructions and other scenarios as a ward council.

We had a discussion about concealed carry and our instructions were to discourage concealed carry in the church except for current or former law enforcement personnel. If anyone spots a firearm in church instructions are to tell the Bishop.

It is interesting that talk of ccw comes up for religious meeting house.

As I understand it a Bishop and Stake President and Kirton McConkie are presently being sued for issueing effectively a "Do not enter Church property" letter against a person in NC. Mormonleaks published the depositions of two people invovled. The line questioning was about wrapons on Church property - which there is a prohibition by Church policy.

I should be clearer. Those law enforcement carriers were intended to only be those who offer or are asked to carry and are approved by Priesthood leaders. In our stake conferences for example we always have four people carrying sitting in specific locations for security.

No one is required to react to testimonies except the one conducting.  People can ignore the comments by opening hymnbook s and reading the songs, for example.

In order to skip/ignore your comment as off topic, had to read it first.
