Women's Session

No discussion would be complete without the now familiar life is a pizza pie philosophy. If those who have less than I do get another slice of life, then I lose the extra slice I deserve more.

Troll on.

Which is funny b/c I described exactly what has happened.  People recognize it, they just don't want to admit it . . . that's cool.

You can make any analogy you want but these are the facts. Men are specifically addressed less now than in the past.  Women are specifically addressed less now than in the past.  Prior to this change, many, many women complained that b/c the Women's session wasn't on the same weekend as GC it wasn't on the same footing.  In order to rectify this perceived "inequality" the Women's session is now held the same weekend, thus resulting in less for both men and women.

That's a fact-it ain't about "life is a pizza", it's a very specific instance which has clearly resulted in less targeted instruction for both men and women. And as a result of that, less instruction for women, we have women complaining that they don't get as much . . .it's so incredibly ironic, but those complaining probably don't see the irony.  To each his own.

I don't remember any of the sisters here expressing a desire to hear more from their God chosen leaders complaining that the Women's Session was a week before the rest of General Conference.

It is best not to assume those who express one opinion share all the other opinions of people they may share that one opinion with.

Did he foresee a time when even Latter-day Saint women would bristle at an emphasis on parenthood?

As Elder Maxwell prophesied in 1978...

This new irreligious imperialism seeks to disallow certain opinions simply because those opinions grow out of religious convictions. Resistance to abortion will be seen as primitive. Concern over the institution of the family will be viewed as untrendy and unenlightened.

If the first presidency and the Proclamation emphasize that the gender of men and women is different then it stands to reason that we should care about the genders of those who speak.  As far as I am aware, Christ is the only male who suffered what women suffer. Since, none of our prophets or apostles have that ability I think it is ok to desire to hear more from the women who understand what it is like to be a woman in this church.

Could you please expound on what Jesus suffered that women also suffer? Specifically, what did Jesus do that only women can do and men cannot.

Logically, what you are saying - correct me if I am wrong - men, even those called as prophets of God, cannot compare to what a woman can say to women. I think you have made some odd assumptions:  1) Where did the idea that General Conference was a time for women to talk about what it means to be women in the Church of Jesus Christ? I don't think I have ever seen that type of description before. I know that social organizations promote that concept, but never within the Church of Jesus Christ.

This sounds more and more like the teachings of humans mingled with scripture. Can you see how others might see it as such?

Even if there were only women speakers in the Women's Sessions, women would still be hearing many more men talk than women during conference.  There has been no suggestion here by any woman that we aren't interested in hearing from men.

It is so strange to see this claim that those who like hearing from their sisters are seeing the world only by gender when you act like those who would like to hear a few more talks by women don't want to listen to men at all.  Your construction is putting it all into a binary men vs. women speakers, no one else is.

I am a bit flummoxed. You just stated above, "women would still be hearing many more men talk than women during Conference."  When you evaluate speakers in this manner you are attempting to qualify that gender has some value when evaluating Conference speakers. You follow that up by then stating, "There has been no suggestion here by any woman that we aren't interested in hearing from men."  This is not logical - you just qualified speakers by gender and then you say gender has no value. It is either one or the other it cannot logically be both.

Go back and read this thread from the beginning. One of the main complaints was about the men - as in the only men that spoke were prophets/apostles - was crowding on the number of women speaking. I have commented on this binary approach, but I for dang sure did not start it. I have attacked it repeatedly.

Do the men struggle with the priesthood session like this?  Sincere question, I’m not trying to be judgmental or sarcastic.

Honestly, I have never heard a brother complain about it in any way. Other than taking the sacrament and our addiction recovery meetings, it is my favorite Church meeting. I’ve attended almost every one since I was 12 years old. We had to drive 100 miles to the stake center in Albuquerque to hear it on a phone feed and we always stopped at Lotta Burger in Santa Fe on the way back for their delicious green chile burgers. Burgers after Priesthood session has been my tradition since then...and our sons are continuing the tradition with their families. Much of my approach to testimony, Priesthood service, marriage, and fatherhood was learned, internalized, and cemented in those meetings. I’m kinda sad it’s only once a year now.

Will the social media fast include leaving this message board for ten days?

Should we brethren join the sisters?

"a 10 day fast from social media and any other media that brings negative and impure thoughts to your mind. Pray to know which influences to remove during your fast."

Does this website count as social media? If so, it looks like we'll be having a bachelor party here for a week and a half ;)

"So we would eliminate input from the different perspective held by the other half of humanity?  Ridiculous!"

Of course we cannot say that now since women are exactly like men and so they do not have a unique perspective, so who cares if they don't show up for 10 days.  ;)   I mean we would not want to offend them by implying they are different from men now would we?

You can't have it both ways.  :)
